Maths in an Everyday Context P6

We know how important it is to use our Numeracy skills in an everyday context and with our current topic of Money we have had plenty of opportunity to link our learning to the real world. The class have brought in a whole range of shopping receipts and we have used this to not only devise our own set of questions,so also linking to our literacy outcomes but also  answering our peers questions using all 4 operations. We also had the opportunity to demonstrate our skills further as P6 both collected and counted the Children In Need Donations. We had a group of bankers that did an amazing job! I think we can all see how important Numeracy is in our everday life and just how many times we use Maths perhaps without even realising it!

Ranger Service Visit P6

We were lucky enough to have a visit from The West Lothian Ranger Service this week. This was an environmental workshop which engaged the class by running a range of nature inspired games to help them understand the community and environment around them. We started with a mapping activity where we saw an aerial shot of East Calder taken by a satellite. It was interesting to discuss what our access rights were to the land that surrounds us and how by following a few simple rules it will allow us all to assist in managing our natural heritage whilst also enhancing biodiversity.

5K Marathon Champ!

Congratulations for running your first 5k marathon. You competed in a race with 18 year olds but still managed to be the 24th girl to cross the line and placed 84th out of a 160 people, amazing! This was some achievement coupled with the fact you raised over £400 for a charity. We are all so proud of you!

WW2 Context P7B

As we come to the end of our WW2 context in 7B I would just like to say a big thank you to the members of the class who brought in their precious WW2 family artefacts. It was great for the class to see and handle these items as it really added a personal touch, allowing the class to see how war impacted families throughout Scotland.

West Lothian Museum Services -P7B

Fantastic to welcome Maureen Liddell fromWest Lothian Museum Services to our class today. She shared with us a range of aretefacts and stories relating to our current context of WW2. We learnt about how our country prepared for war, discussing rationning, evacuation and shelters. The class were fortunate enough to handle a range of artefacacts including a gas mask, identity cards, ration coupons and even an ARP warden helmet. This visit links closely to the work we are doing in PM writing at the moment where we are looking closely at the features and layout of a recount.

P7B Outside School Achievements

Congratulations to these members of 7B for their achievements outside of school. We have the rosettes for 2 clear rounds in a  jumping competition at a local horse riding school, quite the achievement! The medal was for an unbeatable season with Murieston United girls team, amazing! What a talented pair. If you would like to share any achievements from outside of school please let us know. We would love to showcase your talents, and remember an achievement can be anything you are proud of !
