P3a Judo Session

This week we were very lucky to have a visitor teach us some Judo techniques.  We played some games and learned some Judo moves. We had to work with partners, listen to instruction and take care not to hurt anyone else. Protecting our heads was the most important part. It was great fun. Some of us are even going to start going to weekly sessions.

P3a Sharing the Learning

Our adults came into class to see what we have been learning. We showed them our Numeracy skills by working through an Esti-mystery. Then we got out lots of different concrete materials so we could show them how we use them. We had thousands, hundreds, tens & ones blocks and rods out to make numbers up to and beyond one thousand, counters to show our division work, iPads to show how we work on our tables online and a Maths table with shapes, money and geo-boards to work with. We introduced our adults to some different resources. It also gave them time to read what is on the walls in our classroom.

P3a Problem Solving

Today we were set a task to find out how many different towers we could make using one green, one yellow & one red block.  We used the cards to get into random partners. We got out the blocks and worked together on the towers. We came up with our success criteria together. We needed to –

  • work together
  • try
  • Used different colours of blocks
  • write / draw our answer
  • have same answer as partner

Once we had found a tower we had to record it on our sheet. We discussed our strategies and shared how we got our answers.

Once we had found as many towers as we could, we thought about what would make it harder.  We decided to add another block, this time a blue one.

P3a Division

We used concrete materials to work on division. We started off dividing by 2 as we all know that table. Once we worked one out we wrote the sum on our table. We worked out lots of different sums. Then we moved on to dividing by 3 and some of us even tried dividing by 4.

When we work in pairs we have started using numbered cards to find out who we are working with. This makes it totally random so even the teacher doesn’t know who we will end up with. It also keeps our brains working as we are not able to rely on the same person each time.

P3a Numeracy

Continuing on from last week’s learning on place value we have been working on Hundred’s, Ten’s & One’s.  We had to find our partners by working out how many HTO’s a number had, then we had to get into order smallest to biggest.  We had checkers to make sure we had completed it correctly.  Then we got into our groups and worked on different activities.  One group work on Seesaw and had to put numbers in order and say which were greater than & less than while another worked with the concrete material.  Another group were given a 3 digit challenge to work out all the numbers that could be made from the 3 digits.  They then had to work out which were odd and which were even and then put them in order.  They were then challenged further by using 4 digits.
