P2/1

P2/1 have had a great time during Maths Week. We have been learning about 2d shapes. We made them inside with lollipop sticks,  and even got to draw the shapes on the table! Some of us drew shape pictures.
We have loved exploring 2d shapes in the tuff tray and have made some beautiful pictures with them.

We also made shapes outside and had a great time working together to find, count and record numbers with our partners.

Primary 2/1

P2/1 have done a great job of settling into the new school year.

We have had great fun exploring our new classroom and getting to know our new classmates.

In maths, we have been sorting. We listened to the story ‘Handa’s Surprise’. Handa had lots of different fruits, so we wondered how we could sort them out. P2 were problem solving together to sort our Lego.
‘We could sort them by colour’, ‘we could sort them by shape’. After that the P2s talked about how we could represent the groups.

We’ve also been learning about our school rules Ready, Respect and Safe. And our school LEARN values.

We were very creative designing our rainbow fish for our class charter. We think it looks great!

Learning in P2/1 and P2.

P2 and P2/1 had a super time at The Scottish Owl Centre in Polkemet.
We took part in a ‘Hoots for Dinner’ game, where we learned about what some owls eat and saw an owl fly from perch to perch. One of our highlights was seeing a baby owl. We all thought it looked very fluffy, small and cute!

After lunch we had a go on the Owl slide and had great fun at the park.

We’ve been outside in this lovely weather. We worked in pairs to draw analogue clocks. We’ve been working on o’clock, half past and quarter past times.

We have been experimenting with our new loom frames in class. We like to choose the colours and textures of each thread. It’s great for our fine motor skills too.

We’ve been learning about the Coronation and have been listening to facts read by our Reading Buddies. We made coronation bookmarks.

We were also using our creative skills to make fantastic crowns fit for a king!

Happy Red Nose Day! P2/1 had a great time dressing in red for Comic Relief today.

This week we have been learning to use tally marks to record information. We found out about our favourite animals and favourite toys. P2 have been dividing by 2 and P1 have been learning to ‘share equally’.

We read our reading books to our reading buddies in the library and P2 learned five new Word Boost words from The Tobermory Cat by Debi Gliori.

P2/1 had a really great time in their Judo taster session last week. Everyone was tired out at the end of it! The pupils enjoyed working together.

We were very excited to share our learning about Scotland with our parents and carers this week. We showed our jotter work, built Scottish castles, designed a Nessie and created tartans. We thought the tasting table with the shortbread and oatcakes was the most popular activity!

Yesterday was World Book Day. We could come to school dressed as a character from a book. We liked sharing our favourite stories with our classmates. We made our own mini books and could say that a front cover needs a title, the name of the author and the name of the illustrator. Some of us copied our favourite book.

Last week was story-telling week and we had great fun listening to stories in our class library. We scanned QR codes to watch our choice of story on the iPads.

We’ve been learning about Scotland and used our problem solving and teamwork skills to design a Scottish castle. We had a choice of junk modelling with boxes, iPads or Lego. We presented our designs to the class. One our castles even had a hot tub!

We are looking forward to sharing our learning with parents/carers on 2nd March.

This week has been Scots Week at East Calder. P2/1 have enjoyed listening to stories about Katie Morag. We were really surprised and excited to receive a letter from her! She was asking us to design a new tartan skirt. Her one had been ruined when she was trying to deliver the mail. We used our fine motor skills to use a ruler and created these fantastic tartans.
In music we’ve been learning to keep a steady beat by clapping and dancing along to Scottish music. This is our favourite song:

We did a brilliant job of reciting our poems in Scots and are really looking forward to hearing all the winners at our Scots school assembly next Friday.
