Many thanks for your continued support.

Free Book Friday!

We would like to let everyone know that we are launching FREE Book Friday.

We have a large selection of surplus books that we no longer require and would like to promote a love of reading by giving them away to pupils and families.

Every Friday pupils can choose to bring a book  home from our selection in school. We also hope the weather is kind and we will have tables with books in the playground for families to chose from.

Look out for the Free Books HERE sign. Feel free to take as many as you wish.

Happy Reading!

Our Big Cosy Read!

At East Calder Primary  we are proud of our Silver  Reading Schools Award.

We love special events where we can enjoy books and reading, and that also give us  the opportunity to have fun with others.

On Friday to celebrate World Book Day we all enjoyed a BIG Cosy Read. It was great fun relaxing and listening to someone reading, or just having time to look at a book with a friend.

There was a huge variety of super squishies, cushions and cuddly toys in each class as everyone snuggled up to share a story.

We hope everyone enjoyed this event ..and remember.. keep reading!

Celebrating Scots Language

We have been celebrating all things Scottish over the last few weeks and classes have had fun learning about Scottish culture as well as reading and writing in Scots. They have enjoyed listening to Scottish poems, stories and songs.

Primary 1 have been using Scots words to describe the weather. Some classes have included Scots words in their WordBoost lists. Primary 5 created their own ‘scunners’, Scottish horror characters and also wrote examples of alliteration in Scots.

Many thanks to our wonderful Secret Readers who read some stories in Scots this week. Classes always love have a visitor and it is so important for learners to hear adults reading aloud. This is especially appreciated when we are encouraging and celebrating the diversity of languages at East Calder Primary.

We would love to hear from any parent or carer who would like to read to a class in a language other than English. Although pupils might not understand the words we would love to widen their experience of listening to other languages being spoken.

If you are interested please get in touch by emailing our school office.

Book Week Thanks!

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to school recently to support our learning and enjoyment of books as part of Book Week Scotland.

A very special thank you to all of our wonderful Secret Readers who volunteered to read to classes as part of our Book Week celebrations. Sometimes our lovely volunteers can feel a little daunted at the prospect of reading aloud to classes, but we would like them to know how much we value their support. It is so important that pupils can see that other adults read, not only teachers in school. The classes love having a visitor and they enjoyed a wide range of great stories.

We had many parents and carers visiting our Travelling Book Fair. Thanks to the purchases made  we received commission and this will be used to buy reading resources for our  learners.

We are very grateful to you all for supporting reading enjoyment and the love of books in our school.

It’s here! Our Book Fair opens on Monday.

Our Book Fair from Scholastic Travelling Books has arrived!

The Book Fair is packed with hundreds of the best children’s books for all ages – from award-winners and the newest titles to pocket-money pick-ups and treasured classics.

Any Secret Readers out there?

As in previous years we would love to hear from anyone interested in volunteering as a Secret Reader to help us celebrate Book Week Scotland.

Our classes would love a visit from a Secret Reader any time from Monday 13th until Friday 24th November.

If you think you could help out please contact the school office and let us know which days and times you are available and which stage, if any, you would prefer.
