Facts about the Titanic

Primary 5 have started their new topic which is all about the Titanic. We are going to give you some information about what we have been learning in class so far.

We created a mind map which detailed where, when, why, who and what happened.

Where:

  • The Titanic received the name “unsinkable” however, it ended up sinking in the North Atlantic Ocean.
  • It was built in Belfast, Ireland.
  • It set off from Southampton, UK.
  • It was meant to travel to New York.

When:

  • It took 3 years to build.
  • It set off on the 14th April 1912.
  • It sank 15th April 1912 at 2:20 am.

Why:

  • The titanic crashed into an ice berg.
  • The titanic was built out of poor iron and the rivets could not withstand the blow from the ice berg.
  • Many people died of hypothermia as the water was so cold. It was well below freezing temperature.
  • There were only 20 lifeboats and therefore not enough to cater for over 2000 people that were on board.

Who:

There were many people held accountable for this disaster.

  • Captain Lord of the Californian was blamed as he ignored distress signals and had the radio turned off for too long.
  • Captain Edward Smith of the Titanic as he did not see the iceberg quickly enough and failed to slow the ship down.
  • Thomas Andrew the Architect was to blame as he failed to design the titanic using high quality iron.

What:

  • The titanic was the largest ship ever built.
  • When the Carpathian arrived to save the survivors there were only those left on board lifeboats.
  • It cost 7.5 million dollars to build.
  • There were 4 funnels on the titanic but only 3 of them worked.
  • As the titanic was sinking it snapped in half.
  • The whole distance of the ship was 2000ft.

Well done to P5B for remembering all this information!
