Coming soon…to a school near you!

Book Week Scotland is just round the corner and  we are delighted to welcome the Scholastic Travelling Book Fair to East Calder Primary School.

This is a  pop up book store where pupils and parents/ carers will be able to browse and buy a wide variety of exciting books and also some fun stationary.

The Book Fair will be set up on  Thursday 9th November and will be here until the following week. It will be open at set times after school.

More details to follow.

Hope to see you all soon!

Primary 1

This week Primary 1 were very lucky to welcome Miss Ross and Mrs Ogilvie who will be working with us for a further four weeks.

We continue to learn new sounds and have added to Seesaw the second set of sounds; c, k, e, r, h, m, d.  This will be homework next week.  We now know lots of sounds and we are beginning to blend them together to build and read small words.

This week we introduced Word Boost, a programme to increase our vocabulary.  A ‘postcard’ was sent home on Thursday so the children can practise using these boost words.

Please remember to return reading books on a Thursday so they are ready for a different group of children to read on Monday.

This week in P2

Another very busy week in P2. This week we are finishing off our addition and subtraction learning and we are beginning to look at multiplication. We have been using loop cards working in partners to solve problems in maths. We looked at shapes in the real world and discussed what they might be. We enjoy our daily number talk as it promotes a lot of discussion. We have also been doing a lot of Sumdog in class as part of maths lessons and using our QR codes to choose a maths game to practise.
We have had fun creating our own pointillism pumpkins this week as well and learning about this style of art.

P3 Learning

This week we have been learning about writing questions.  We had to try to write question marks on the table.  They are quite a difficult shape!  Then with our random partner we thought of a question and wrote it on the desk.  We shared our questions and then tried to write two more.  Someone wrote a sentence by mistake but as a class we were able to turn it into a question by changing some of the words.  Again we shared our questions.  As a class we realised that most of the questions began with the same words.  We will continue working on questions next week.

We continued our work on money by completing lots of different activities from recognising coins to giving correct coins to £10.00.

Phytoplankton and Pumpkin Fractions in P7.

An exciting week in Primary 7, our class pet arrived! An oxygen producing variety of phytoplankton, this idea was conceived and led by a couple of our pupils. They will need to look after it and culture it to enable growth and reproduction. This ties in well with our learning around IoT and our classroom sensors, we are going to explore if having plankton in the classroom will lower our Co2 levels.

For our mathematics context, we have started to look at fractions, creating some fraction art and fraction Halloween pumpkins.

We also had our Halloween disco yesterday, we have included a couple of photographs from the night, more to come soon!

Circles in P7 and P7/6

Both classes spent some time together and shared our learning about circles. We had to draw circles in pairs with a piece of string and a piece of chalk, we then labelled the different properties of a circle. We figured out that the string had to be tight and we needed an anchor point. There were some great displays of communication, leadership and problem solving going on. After we finished, we had a bit of fun playing a giant game of duck, duck, goose – running around the circumference of the circle. An excellent showcase of our mathematical understanding and skills, all whilst the sun was shining.

Sharing the Learning in P3/2

We had a very exciting start to our new term in P3/2 as we had our Sharing the Learning for parents and carers on Thursday. We focused on our learning in Numeracy and we were excited to show off all the hard work we have doing in multiplication so far. We used concrete materials to make times tables and we wrote the calculations on the desk. We love writing on the desk!

We showed our parents and carers how to play “Whack a Mole” on the ipads and we were confidently able to explain how this game helps us to skip count. We share our Dienes materials and showed our adults how we can use them to make two, three or four digit numbers. We also enjoyed showing off all the other tools we use to support our learning in Numeracy. Some of were also excited to show our jotters to our adults too, especially to show our great progress in Writing so far this year.

Thank you to all our parents and carers who came to our Sharing the Learning. It was a lovely afternoon and the children really enjoyed having you all in class with us.

Article 28: We have the right to learn.

This week in P2

It has been great to be back after the October holiday. We have been continuing to look at writing descriptions and working on addition and subtraction in numeracy. We have used our numeracy skills  through play opportunities as well to support our learning.  We are continuing to look at animals and different climate zones for our topic and learning about habitats.

Primary 4A- Class Pet

Team 3 worked together to clean out our class pet yesterday.

They made sure to give her cage a really good clean before setting it back up for her. The children hid some treats and chews around her cage to keep her busy. She enjoys having a play in her ball.
