Working and Playing hard in and around The Hive

We have had another very busy and successful term in The Hive.  The children have been working hard on their Literacy, Numeracy and social skills in a variety of different ways.

Henry enjoyed using our numicon materials to help him enhance his addition and subtraction skills.

Kayden and Aria were focusing on times tables.  They asked each other a times tables question and the answer was hidden in the sand!

Eoin was very focussed when learning his tricky words, as they were hidden in a wordsearch.

Alex and Glen were developing their fine and gross motor skills by using bikes and scooters in the playground.  They were learning how to balance as well as sharing and taking turns.

Numeracy and Maths in P2

This week we have been looking at all the resources we have and reminding ourselves how we can use these in our learning.

P1 Learning

This week we have been learning our new sound ‘ng’ and have been writing some descriptions. We’ve been trying really hard to remember capitals, finger spaces and full stops when writing sentences, and some of us have been using joining words too.

We are continuing to explore Our Five Senses and  have had fun playing the feely bag game . We used lots of vocabulary to describe the textures we felt e.g smooth, rough, bumpy, hard, squishy, soft. We also learned about our sense of smell and found out that some smells can act as a warning eg. food can smell off, so don’t eat it .

“If you smell smoke, that’s a warning. There could be a fire and you need to get out.” – Heather

In Maths we’ve been looking at o’clock times on analogue and digital clocks. We’ve played some bingo games and have  even made some of our own clocks.

Happy Campers

P7 are having a smashing time at Lockerbie Manor, in spite of the weather.  Lots of fun and adventures.  Mrs Stewart and Mrs Donnelly are off to visit them today and will share another update tomorrow.

Happy Red Nose Day! P2/1 had a great time dressing in red for Comic Relief today.

This week we have been learning to use tally marks to record information. We found out about our favourite animals and favourite toys. P2 have been dividing by 2 and P1 have been learning to ‘share equally’.

We read our reading books to our reading buddies in the library and P2 learned five new Word Boost words from The Tobermory Cat by Debi Gliori.

Choral Counting in P3B

We have been doing a choral count almost every day. We take pictures and put them on our Numeracy Wall. We like to spot number patterns and we write them beside the choral count.

We like to change the numbers each time we do it. On this one, we were counting in 4’s. Sometimes, the people that are really confident find harder patterns. Miss Marra would say the first number and then we would say the second, then it keeps going for our choral count.

Literacy in P3B

We have been taking part in stations this week to help us read and write “ou” words.  We enjoyed our learning activities and could talk about how they help us to remember how to read and write our words.

We used play dough to make our words.

We completed a word search to help us read our words. We enjoyed trying to find our words, especially the ones that were hidden very well. Miss Marra gave us some extra words to challenge us too!

We also looked for our words in books. We then wrote the words we found using a strategy of our choice. Some of us chose to write our words on our Literacy Learning Wall.

Some of also practised writing our words in hieroglyphics to challenge ourselves further. We enjoyed linking our learning in Literacy with our Ancient Egyptian Topic.
