Snapshot of Learning in P3B

We have been taking part in “choral counting” in Number Talks. We count together as a class, usually skip counting, and then we look for patterns. Miss Marra asks us the questions “what do you notice? What do you wonder?” This gives us the chance to talk about patterns and share our strategies. In this choral count, we were skip counting in 3’s.

I noticed all the number going up in order, adding 3 each time.   Lexi

The first digit of each number gets higher to show that the numbers are getting higher e.g. 1, 2, 3.  Struan

I noticed that in the bottom row when you add the digit in each number together, they make either 6 or 9.    Finlay

We are continuing to practise reading and writing Fry’s words in class. On the weeks when we are working on a Phonics sound, we still practise reading and writing Fry’s words during Smart Start. We love writing our words on the desks because it is a fun way to write them and it helps us to practise spelling them correctly.

We are enjoying our Ancient Egyptian Topic and we have been provided with opportunities to lead our own learning. We asked Miss Marra if we could learn more about mummification so we watched a video, explaining the process and then we had a go ourselves. We mummified dolls and we even had a go mummifying our partners. Luckily no organs were removed! We remembered to start from the head down.  Two of the most important skills we had to use were communication and teamwork. This is what we said about our learning.

I loved it so much because it was so much fun!   Aria

That was so good. I remembered to start at the head.   Tyler

I started at the feet by mistake but then I started again and remembered to start at the head.    Isla

I’ve learned more about what mummification is and how they do it.   Emmi

I already knew lots of facts about this but I liked sharing what I know.   Peter

Coding and Dancing in P7A

We were lucky enough to have a visit from a coding specialist last week. Miss Gurung, from Edinburgh University sparked our creativity and critical thinking skills when she asked us to identify different popular dances through code.

We then had a chance to demonstrate the code through dancing and show off our moves.

The final part of the challenge was to create and code our own character to prepare for a dance off. We carried out the dance battle and voted for the winning team. Have a look at some of our dances and code below:

P3B Judo

We were so excited to participate in a taster session with Destination Judo on Wednesday. We had to use some very important skills such as teamwork and resilience. Some of the moves were quite tricky but we worked hard and helped each other.

Some of us enjoyed the session so much that we would like to start going to Judo in East Calder each week. We can certainly say it was a success! Miss Marra was also very impressed with our listening skills and we were all so focused. Well done everyone!

P3a Judo Session

This week we were very lucky to have a visitor teach us some Judo techniques.  We played some games and learned some Judo moves. We had to work with partners, listen to instruction and take care not to hurt anyone else. Protecting our heads was the most important part. It was great fun. Some of us are even going to start going to weekly sessions.

Primary 1 Learning

Even although it was a short week, we’ve had a very busy few days in P1.

We have learned our new sound ‘qu’ and have been practising our reading skills on Reading Wise. We have also been adding within ten using dominoes and ten frames for Numeracy.

We have continued to learn about toys and looked at some toys from the past. Many were made from metal, wood or cloth, unlike a lot of our plastic toys today.

We thought about which forces toys use to help them move. We found many  that use a push or pull force, in the classroom or outside.

Some of us also completed a STEAM challenge to design and make a game of our own – a marble maze using lego.

We were lucky to have a surprise judo session on Wednesday and had lots of fun learning new moves and working with partners on the mat.

P5 and P3 Reading Buddies

Primary 5 and Primary 3 had a short but productive session together today where we shared texts using different media and platforms. Some pupils shared their allocated texts on Giglets, some used the Storytime Online QR codes to access books and some preferred good old paperbacks!

We are all looking forward to World Book Day next week where we hope to take part in lots more exciting reading activities.

Community Hub

It was great to be able to visit  The Partnership Centre today. After a long wait due to covid restrictions our Hub group has finally had the opportunity to make links with the community again. We had a great time visiting the library, completing quizzes, questionnaires and even had a storytelling session. It has encouraged us all to grab a library card and make the most of this great resource right on our doorstep! Many thanks to the Library and Debbie for opening early for us. It was fantastic to have the whole library to ourselves. Keep an eye out for our next Community Hub visit!

P3a Sharing the Learning

Our adults came into class to see what we have been learning. We showed them our Numeracy skills by working through an Esti-mystery. Then we got out lots of different concrete materials so we could show them how we use them. We had thousands, hundreds, tens & ones blocks and rods out to make numbers up to and beyond one thousand, counters to show our division work, iPads to show how we work on our tables online and a Maths table with shapes, money and geo-boards to work with. We introduced our adults to some different resources. It also gave them time to read what is on the walls in our classroom.

Learning in P2/1

Last week was story-telling week and we had great fun listening to stories in our class library. We scanned QR codes to watch our choice of story on the iPads.

We’ve been learning about Scotland and used our problem solving and teamwork skills to design a Scottish castle. We had a choice of junk modelling with boxes, iPads or Lego. We presented our designs to the class. One our castles even had a hot tub!

We are looking forward to sharing our learning with parents/carers on 2nd March.

Primary 2 Scotland

The children voted to learn about Scotland as they wanted to know more about the country that they live in. Below are photographs of just some of the good work and learning that has taken place. We look forward to welcoming parents/careers on the 2nd March to share our learning.
