P3’s week

This week in Primary 3 we have been looking at durations of time. Mrs Hillan has given us two times and we have had to work out how long is between them. We have been finding this tricky, but collaborating and communicating in small groups for this has helped to boost our confidence. We will continue to work on this. We have discussed how it is important it is to know the time so that we aren’t late for our work in the future or we don’t miss an appointment. We also discussed that we need to know how long is between two times so that we know how long something lasts, for example when we go to see a movie at the cinema.

We are now becoming more confident in showing our understanding of a text through completing our comprehension activities. We have been able to use these skills to then help us build up an understanding of our new class novel just by looking at the front cover and then by reading the blurb. We were all able to make predictions of what we think is going to happen in the story and we could then change our predictions once we had read the blurb. We have enjoyed working collaboratively to create a piece of drama retelling our predictions!

We all enjoyed celebrating World Book Day last week, and as promised, here are some pictures of us in our pjs with our teddies and books!

P3 are Telling the Time!

This week in Numeracy and Maths we have been focusing on Time. We have been looking at O’Clock, Half Past, Quarter Past and Quarter To. We made our own clocks and have been using these to help us. We enjoyed creating our own designs on the clocks. We have been working hard to learn our times and Mrs Hillan will be asking us our times often throughout the day. Some of us have been matching written times to the clocks and some of us have been recording times in digital and analogue.  As a class we have been using some interactive games to test our knowledge and also help us learn something new. We will continue to consolidate the times we have learned so far, as well as trying new ones next week.

“When the big hand is pointing to the 9 it means quarter to”– Ryley

“When the big hand is at 9 on analogue, on digital you would write 45 for quarter to” – Summer

“When the big hand points to the 3 and the small hand points to the 8, it is quarter past 8″– Olivia

“When the big hand goes from one number to another number that means it’s been 5 minutes” – Erin

“When the big hand gets to the 6 that means half past” – Lewis D

“When the big hand points to the 12, it is o’clock” – Shay

P3 Filming with P3/4

This week we filmed our TV adverts to encourage people to visit Glasgow. We were working with P3/4 in mixed groups. We had to create a script as well as a piece of drama. We had lots of fun and had a few laughs along the way! We gave feedback to each group as we watched and filmed. A lot of similar feedback came up for our next steps, such as projecting our voices more and not having our backs to the audience. There was also a lot of positive feedback such as good acting in our dramas, sharing good information and some of us spoke loudly and clearly.  Unfortunately we can’t upload the videos as the files are too large!

This week in Primary 3

Primary 3 have been learning about Time in Numeracy. This week some of us have been showing our knowledge of half past the hour, whilst the rest of us have been sharing our knowledge of quarter past. We have been demonstrating this knowledge through communicating with everyone during the class teach, through recording it and also by playing some online Time games. This is something we will continue to explore and extend our knowledge of.  Next week we will hopefully create our own clocks to help us.

In literacy this week we have been discussing the importance of comprehension and why it is necessary that we understand what we read. The children were able to explain how this helps them now for their own enjoyment of a text as well as being able to explain it to others, but also how these skills will be vital in the future when it comes to interviewing for a job as well as within the jobs we may pick. We decided that being able to understand text of any sort would be a key factor in all jobs. We have been using our group reading books to show our comprehension skills and we have been answering different types of questions to demonstrate this. Primary 3 have also started looking at the Blooms Superheroes who help us to use and develop our skills in Remembering, Understanding, Applying our own knowledge, Analysing, Evaluating and Creating within our reading.

Primary 2/1 Weekly Update.

Let’s start off our blog with our learning highlights this week from the children.

Elkie – My highlight was making my Highland cow because  I loved making it.

Sai liked making his fact file about highland cows, his favourite fact was that their hair is so long it goes over their eyes, but it is there to protect them.

Jordon – I liked drawing Nessie because she goes under water.

Nathaniel- I liked learning about the sound x because it was easy to write!

Tadas – I like the daily 5 because it is easy for me!

Robyn – I liked learning all of our sounds, every Monday I look forward to seeing all the new letters for the week.

It’s been another busy week where we have been learning all about the Loch Ness Monster! We watched the Nessie cam but unfortunately didn’t catch a glimpse of her this time, why not have a look for yourselves at home!

This led to a very interesting discussion about whether we thought Nessie existed or not….. Most of us are believers! We made our own Nessie to decorate our Learning Journey wall. We had to use our scissors very carefully and we came up with some amazing Nessie designs.

In writing this week we wrote postcards to Nessie, telling her all about ourselves and the things we like to do. We all wrote at least 3 sentences all by ourselves. After reading the story, Hamish the Highland Cow by Natalie Russell, we also designed and wrote our own fact files about Highland cows and created a pastel drawing using a smudging technique to create a ‘hairy’ effect!

We are still working on the topic of Time in Maths. This week we have been looking at how we measure time. We talked about seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks. We discussed how long we thought it would take us to complete certain activities. We had a team work challenge where we had to match up activities with how long we thought they would last.

Lennon thought this was a good challenge and Erica said it was lots of fun.

We have also been discussing the seasons and which season we like the best!

Euan’s favourite season is Summer because that’s when his birthday falls.

Jordon loves Winter the best because the snow comes out.

Ethan loves Autumn  the best because you can collect all the leaves.

Kayden loves Spring because you can start to play outside.

We designed some posters to show different changes  which take place in each season.

As part of our numeracy we have been examining how to double numbers. We are getting really good at doing this mentally and talking about our answers. One of our focuses this week has been how to use a number line to help us solve addition calculations by counting on. Its really easy when you know how!

Just a little reminder for the children to bring their red homework folders to school every day with their reading books. Many thanks!
