A Short Week in P6!

Health – Headstrong

We have been learning about how to approach things we find tricky in a positive way.

Hope – I enjoyed headstrong.

Katie – Mark is funny.

Literacy

We continued to read our class novel and predicted how the different characters would respond to events in the story.

Numeracy

We discussed negative numbers and practised ordering them from smallest to largest.

Ourdoor Learning

Emily – We made posters and learnt how important it was to avoid putting waste in the bin and about the need to recycle plastic.

Weekly Update From P1

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and the beautiful warm weather we had. This weeks blog is a little shorter than normal as we have only been in school for the last 2 days.

Literacy -Writing

This week the children have been writing about their morning rountine. They were encouraged to include the word “I” and use a word mat and pictures. They did really well and were so proud of themselves. A few examples below-

Numeracy

The children have enjoyed counting collections and using dot patterns to find different ways to make 5.

During strutured play, many of the children  chose to practice their writing and numeracy skills. Very impressive!

Have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with an update from Primary One.

This Week In P3

Literacy

During reading this week, we had to read a passage and highlight the adjectives describing the character. After we had identified the describing words, we had to use this information to draw a picture of the character.

We continued to practice our spelling words. We practice our spelling words daily using wooden letters, writing on whiteboards and playing games.

Maths

This week, we were developing our number sense and ordering numbers. We have been ordering numbers from lowest to highest and also highest to lowest.

We were also looking at fractions this week. We were learning that we use fractions in everyday life, such as when we are cutting a pizza. We also had to write the fractions for a whole, half and quarters.

IDL

In science this week, we were learning about materials that were thermal conductors. We learnt that metals are great thermal conductors and this is why pots are made from metals. The atoms in the pot get bigger as they get hotter and this is called thermal expansion.

P4 Class 17.09.21

I liked doing writing about Draco the Dragon.

I enjoyed learning about skip counting strategy to add onto 2 digit numbers. S

I enjoyed learning about fractions because I like to learn.  SC

I liked doing spelling because you can learn new words. DN

I liked learning  about the words Denominator and numerator because it was interesting. M

I liked to do the shields because its creative and inspiring. L

Weekly Post from P6

Health

This week we had a visit from Mark who works for Headspace. Over the next few weeks he will be helping us to talk about mental health. We had great fun in his session!

Outdoor Learning

We had another visit from Green Gym and learnt about animals, their habitats and what they eat. We also thought about how we could improve the school grounds in order to encourage more wildlife.

P.E.

Our basketball skills continue to improve and we have voted to play football after we have finished our basketball learning.

Numeracy – Decimals

We timed ourselves doing different things using stopwatches. We learnt how to time to the nearest hundredth of a second.

Literacy – Writing

This week we wrote a recount about a special event-outdoor learning! We then peer assessed our work. Our recount writing skill has really improved!

Literacy – Reading

We have continued with ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles ‘ and enjoyed using role-play to predict how the characters might react when they meet one of the strange creatures in the book.

P6/5

Maths: doubling in number talks; decimals to one decimal place and two decimal places; mutliplication by ten to millions.

Literacy:

talking and listening – turn taking

reading – predicting

writing – “bumping up” (up leveling) the recount writing about Mr Topley

IDL:

health – headstrong

topic –  myths and legends

Weekly Update From Primary One

Some highlights below from our busy learning week.

Literacy – Writing

This week as part of our recount genre the children drew detailed pictures and completed the sentence “At the shops I ……………..” We had lots of super ideas such as buying toys, clothes, notepads, food etc. Some examples below-

Phonics – s sound

Our sound of the week is s. It is a blue sound because when making the sound you feel it at the tip of your tongue . The children re-created the sound by writing, sorting and painting. They have also used the sound to play bingo and a word matching game . Some great pictures below.

Numeracy- Number 5

We have had a big focus on number 5 this week. The children used 5 frames to demonstrate different ways of making 5.

Maths – Shape

We have also had a big 3D shape sort. The children worked together in groups to sorts all the 3D shapes that they could find in the classroom. They had great fun learning about the shapes and making models.

Play in Primary One

The children firstly turned our construction area into a Mcdonalds and then into a building site! Some super imaginative ideas.

Have a lovely long weekend.

P4/3 Weekly Highlights

It has been yet another busy week in Primary 4/3.

This week in numeracy we have been focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages.

We have been investigating what a fraction is, how it looks and how we can represent a fraction in different ways. Together with Mrs Stevenson we made up a fraction cheat sheet to help us recall some key vocabulary associated with our learning.

We have been looking at each of our names and what fraction of our name is a vowel or a consonant.

We then completed an activity called Fraction Street, here we not only had to use our knowledge of fractions but also our listening skills. Mrs Stevenson called out an instruction, for example – 1/8 of the houses have a red door or 1/2 of the houses have a car parked outside, then we had to colour the correct number.

We also created our own Fraction Sundaes. Here we created a sundae with lots of different flavours, we then had to identify what fraction of each flavour made up our sundaes. Some of us were super greedy!

We didn’t complete nearly as much as we would have liked to this week so we will continue our learning of fractions into next week too.

In writing we are still working on the genre ‘Recount‘, we are all becoming such experts at what this genre of text requires. This week we wrote a recount of a gymnastics lesson from the previous day. We are very good at using a wide variety of time connectives to help sequence all the different events within our pieces of writing.

This week we have also begun to focus on our Reciprocal Reading skills and have been examining what skills are involved in our current skill focus – prediction. We made a ‘four door’ model of all the skills we will be examining. Prediction, questioning, clarifying and summarising.

Behind each door we can write our answers for the text we are focusing on. When predicting, we have been talking about the most important point, which is justifying our answers using the clues such as  –

The Title,

The illustrations,

The blurb,

The Genre of book,

The audience.

We hope you have enjoyed a little taster of our learning this week. We are looking forward to a well earned rest on Monday and Tuesday next week!

This week in Primary 5

We have been busy this week in Primary 5! This has been our Fractions, Decimals and Percentages focus week in Numeracy and Maths. We completed some work using Fractions. We looked at what a fraction is, how it looks and how we present it – 1/2/, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, 1/8 etc.

Pupil thoughts:

I think Fractions is a bit hard – Kayleigh

Fractions are very easy and they are fun to learn – Chloe

If you want to half something, you put a line through the middle and if you want to quarter something you put a line through the middle one way and then through the other way. – Lewis R

When you are showing fraction you put a number on the top and one on the bottom with a line in between – Lewis D

Let’s say I had 6 on the bottom and 2 on the top, if I had a shape with 6 parts, I would colour in 2 of them – Erin R

We can use fractions when eating pizza, chocolate and cake – Sophie G

We then went on to look at mixed numbers and fractions. This is where we have a number like 2 4/5 and we then convert it into an improper fraction.

We will look at Decimals and Percentages and how these also link with fractions next week. We will use youtube clips to help with our understanding. We will focus on how we can find simple decimal fractions and working out 50%, 25% and 10% of something.

In Writing this week we continued looking at Recount. Mrs Hillan had an example for us to look at – it was a recount about a trip to a museum. We then picked somewhere we visited and gave a recount of this.

PUPIL RECOUNT IDEAS:

Mine was about going to my Nana’s – Ryley

Mine was about when I went to Arran on holiday – Sophie C

I wrote about Alton Towers – Ariah

I done one on when I went to Erin R’s birthday party – Sophie G

I done one about when I went to Eliburn Park – Matthew

Mine was about going to Burntisland – Caelan

I did one about me going to the beach – Chloe

In Reading we began our focus on Prediction for our Reciprocal Reading Skills. We are very good at making predictions in P5 and we actually make these every day, not only in our reading lessons! This week we were given two images which we then discussed and made several predictions about. Here are the pictures and some of our predictions:

PREDICTIONS:

Caelan – I think the monster is going to crush the kitten because it has it’s foot up.

Olivia – I think it is a goblin because he is green.

Lewis D – The monster is going to wake up the kitten with his foot then follow it home so he can eat all the other kittens, because he looks like he is hungry.

Sophie C – I think he is going to step on the cat, pick it up and then eat it. I think this because he had one foot raised and he looked mad, and when I get mad I’m hungry!

Jessica – I think that the creature is going to keep the cat and take it home. I think this because it looked like the creature was going to grab the kitten.

PREDICTIONS:

Erin P – I think if the rabbit goes through the tunnel then it will go into a big field.

Ariah – I think the rabbit is going to go through the hole and see its house.

Chloe – I think if the rabbit goes through the tunnel then it is going to lead to a different world.

Ciaran – I thought that the source of light was fire.

Lewis D – I think through the tunnel there will be fire and evil people.

Caelan – I think if the rabbit goes through the tunnel, it will go to the stairs of heaven.

Next week is a short week as we are on holiday on Monday and Tuesday!

p6/5 blog

this week we started with learning the areas of a compass and left and right, we didn’t all know them and that’s why we did it. After break Mr Topley came in and told us about his years in the army while he was telling us about the army we took notes and after we wrote the notes and then wrote the notes into paragraphs and some of us got the chance to go onto word and write it down. After that we finished the day off with P.E. and we climbed up ladders and done monkey bars.

On Tuesday we started talking about our topic myths and legends that carried on after break we done a summary on our books that we have read already and wrote it into our literacy jotter. Some of us fixed the library by moving the bookshelves and sorting the books into fiction and non-fiction. after that we done a summery on our books which we took notes and turned it into paragraph’s we had also did math on number lines.

On Wednesday we had Mrs Dobbie. We got dirty and it was extremely messy and we carried on after break for a little bit. We then we had continued our summary’s. After lunch we got our free writing jotters after we had a look at our math wall and looking where to put our displays. We  continued with our summary and reading them out. We then put up some stuff on the walls in the classroom.

On Thursday we started with logging into our glow some people were not able to log in so
