Firstly a picture from last weeks Halloween party. A great time had by all.

Writing

This week the children had to persuade someone that fireworks can be dangerous. The children came up with some very persuasive agruments including – you can get hurt, other people can be silly putting you in danger and pets can get very scared. Some examples below-

Phonics – “i” sound

This week we have been exploring the “i” sound. Having another vowel sound has enabled the children to blend more sounds to create 3 letter words. They have also been working on their letter formation. Some pictures below-

Numeracy

This week we have focused on the nubmer 10. The children have been using ten frames to support their learning. They are an amazing learning tool that support counting, place value, addition and subtration.

We have also been carrying out daily number talks. Number talks or dot patterns are an important tool to help children build a visual link to composing and decomposing small numbers.  Dot patterns provide opportunities for children to work on counting, seeing numbers in a variety of ways, subitising and learning number combinations. An example of a 9 dot pattern detailing the children’s thinking below.

I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable Bonfire night. I will be back next week with more highlights.

P6/5

This week we have been looking at the events in Glasgow, COP 26 and climate change.

For one of their activities related to this the children created and published web based interactive quizzes. I am trying to work out how you can all access them.

Primary 4/3 Learning Highlights

It’s been another busy week in Primary 4/3.

On Monday we checked on our bees nests and hedgehog homes, they are still intact, thankfully! We also took the opportunity to smash our clay flower bombs. We can’t wait until Spring to see all the wildflowers grow in the field and know that we have done a little to improve the biodiversity of our school grounds.

On Tuesday we worked on some fireworks inspired art. We investigated the work of Wassily Kandinsky and used one of his famous abstract pictures ‘Colour Study’ to help us complete our pictures. Here are some of the finished products. We think they look great.

Keeping to the theme of Bonfire Night we decided to write about why we should or shouldn’t ban fireworks. We discussed in depth reasons both for and against. We are getting good at using persuasive language and arguing for what we believe. Here are some examples of our writing.

We hope you have enjoyed reading a few of our learning highlights from this week.

An Update from Primary 5

Primary 5 have been working hard on their tasks this week.

In Numeracy we have been looking at Place Value and what this means. We discussed that a number like: 1276 – would mean that the 1 would have the value of 1000 (thousands), the 2 would have the value of 200 (hundreds), the 7 would have the value of 70 (tens) and the 6 would have the value of 6 (ones). We also discussed the possibility of having numbers containing tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands and millions.

We played some good Place Value games online as well as a board game.

The board game:

In Literacy we have been practising our spelling words with some rainbow writing and some partner work. We also created some stories using our spelling words, you can see these below. It is important we practise these at home too.

In Reading we have started looking at the Reciprocal Reading strategy of Summarising  – this means:

‘Just to tell you the main parts of the story’ – Sophie C

‘If you have a long story, you shorten it up by saying the main parts of the story.’ – Summer

‘You just add the main facts.’ – Lewis

‘Summarise by saying the key facts.’ – Olivia

‘You need to mention who, what, where, when and why’ – Ariah

In Writing we have been looking at our new genre of Persuasive Writing. We wrote pieces this week about whether we thought fireworks should be made silent or not. Here are some of our pieces:

We look forward to another busy week next week!

P4/3 Halloween Party

P4/3 had a great time in class with Halloween themed fun on Friday. Everyone was dressed up and the class was decorated. We wrote instructions to make a witches brew, then we had a Halloween maths problem to solve.  After that, we had Halloween party bags full of treats and we played Halloween themed games including dooking for apples, Halloween twister, pin the scar on Frankie and Halloween bingo. Well done everyone for joining in!

Happy Halloween from P6 !

We watched a creepy film and enjoyed extra friendship time. But we have been working hard all week too! We wrote spooky stories and practised the ‘Timewarp’ dance. Miss Dufton was very good!

Literacy

Also we have now moved on to a new writing genre – exposition. This is a form of persuasive writing.

Topic

We completed our research about how WW2 started.

Outdoor Learning

During our Green Gym session we planted seeds that will bloom next year. They are bee-friendly.

Art

This had a halloween theme. Here is a terrific piece from Piotr:

P4 Class 29/10/21

What a fantastic week we had!

We started learning to write a persuasive text, we learnt to use exclamation mark appropriately and we wrote literal questions about a text.

For Numeracy, we began learning subtraction strategies focusing on inverse operations.  We also revised on fractions and percentages.

We thoroughly enjoyed FUTSAL on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Mrs Buntin taught us how to use and access Glow/ TEAMS.

We had a lot of fun writing spooky stories to day and of course we loved our Halloween Party.

P.5 Halloween

On Thursday we had fun creating a spooky atmosphere for Halloween.

Then on Friday………

We  dressed up for Halloween.

Also we practised our spooky song and dance routine with Megan. Hope you can come along on Sunday to see us perform.

Some highlights from our busy week!

Writing – Persuasive

The children have began a new writing genre. From now until the end of term they will be exploring persuasive writing. This week the topic was Halloween. They were given a sentence starter “Halloween is good because ………..” They came up with a number of reasons- “you get to trick or treat”, “you get to dress up in a scary costume” “you get to scare people” etc. Some super examples below.

Phonics – “a” sound

This week the children were introduced to the “a” sound. This is an important sound as it enables the children to start blending and reading 3 letter words. They used sound mats to support the blending process. They did really well, I am so proud of them.

Numeracy

In numeracy this week we have been sorting, counting and ordering numbers!

As a special Halloween treat the buddies came to help Primary One carry out some spooky Halloween art!

Lastly we are still working on our Autumn display. We think it looks fantastic!

I hope you all have a great Halloween weekend and the children enjoy dressing up and eating lots of sweets! I will be back next week with more updates.

Primary 4/3 Learning Highlights

In Green Gym this week we have been working on improving the biodiversity of our school though building nests for the Bees. During the colder months bees need a safe place to keep warm to help them survive. We have been learning about the important role that bees play in worldwide food production therefore we all need to do our bit to help save them. Whilst we had the tools out we also decided to make some hedgehog nests and some wild flower bombs to help encourage the growth of more flowering plants in our schools grounds.

This week we have been introduced to a new writing genre, ‘Exposition‘, this is where we have to argue one side of an issue. This week we thought it would be a great idea to focus our writing on arguments for reasons we should be making steps to save the bees!

We came up with some excellent reasons. Here are some of our  examples.

Ashley – If we didn’t have any bees we wouldn’t have any chocolate or pizzas!

Nathaniel – Bees can make our world more healthy.

Isla – Bees can pollinate other flowers and encourage biodiversity.

This week we have started learning how to play basketball in gym. We have started off by practising throwing, catching and bouncing the ball with a partner. We even had to try and catch the ball one handed, it was really tricky!

We hope you enjoyed reading our blog, we wish everyone a Happy and safe Halloween.
