This week in P3/4

It has been a busy week. Deans Primary celebrated its 50th birthday this week!

Our class was asked to focus on the 1980s for this weeks celebrations. The children really enjoyed taking a step back in time to explore this wonderful decade.

The children were paired up and given one year each to research online. The children were then able to design a poster showcasing all the different events from that particular year. We joined all of the posters together to create a timeline of the 80s.

In maths we explored counting time in years. We used terms such as, decade and century to calculate years of the past, future and present on an empty number line.

We also had a visit from fireman Steel just in time for bonfire night. He gave us some great tips on how to be safe during this particular event. The children also got to try on his hat and jacket.

Then of course we had Deans birthday celebrations. P3/4 were amazing hosts to all the wonderful guest we had visiting our classroom. We hope you all enjoyed our 80s themed activities. After the celebrations we all got to go to the ice cream van and pick a well earned treat.

Thank you to all of the parents and visitors that came along to celebrate with us during this wonderful occasion.

P5 have a Learning Breakfast and Birthday Celebrations in the Same Week!

Learning Breakfast

Breakfast

  • Keris –We enjoyed the breakfast.
  • Bella – The croissants and pancakes were really good.

Activities

There were various activities. Through playing online games we learnt about internet safety and European facts. We acted out the digestive process, which is something we have learnt about in science. Games included matching the capital cities to their European countries and a flag quiz. Lewis and his mum were very engrossed in a jigsaw that was a map of Europe! Our craft activity was creating map collages.

  • Lacey – Making the European Flag Collages was fun!
  • Lewis – I enjoyed watching my 3-year-old brother do a flag collage even though he used the wrong colours!

The digestive system experiment was popular.

  • Mohamad – My mum thought it was funny!
  • Liam – My mum’s favourite part was squeezing the poo out of the intestines!

School Birthday Celebrations

Thank you to all the visitors who helped us to celebrate Dean’s 50th birthday.

Each class concentrated on a different decade and ours was the 1970s.

Activities

We played games that had been invented in the 1970s – including practising on a space-hopper. In the style of Andy Warhol we created Pop Art pictures, organised significant dates on a timeline and some of us even wore 1970s dress!

  • Bella – My mum enjoyed the Pop Art.
  • Emma – The Spirograph that Bella let us use was great fun!
  • Mason – The Pop Art was really cool!
  • Georgie – The Space Hopper was fun!
  • Monika – I enjoyed the 1970s dancing.
  • Lewis – I enjoyed dressing up as a mini Miss Stanway (we both had a similar costume.)
  • Bella – Miss Stanway was a skilled roller skater!
  • Emma- I liked drawing the roller skates.

Afterwards we all enjoyed our slushi or ice-cream!

Latest News From Primary One

It has been another busy and exciting week in Primary 1. On Tuesday the 5th we welcomed firefighter Steel. He told the children all about his role in the fire service and explained how they not only fight fires but rescue people who get into trouble in the water and climbing. However, the most important message was keeping safe around fireworks. The children asked him lots of questions and some enjoyed trying on his special (very heavy) firefighters hat.

Summer wrote a lovely thank you letter to all  fire fighters who work hard every day to keep us safe.

Story Writing

The children have been learning how to retell and sequence a story. They picked The Rainbow Fish and discovered that the story reflects  our own school values of feeling included, supported, safe and valued.

Yoga has become a form of exercise that the children really enjoy and look  forward to. The children are learning about the benefits of yoga through stories, music and games. Yoga helps to build resilience,  manage emotions and promote a sense of well-being through the use of postures, meditation and mindfulness.

We have also been busy preparing for Deans 50th birthday. We hope you can come and visit us. We are showcasing learning in the present time.

Have a lovely safe weekend.

Primary 2/1 Update!

It has been an exciting week so far in Primary 2/1 as we prepare to celebrate our schools’ 50th Birthday on Friday! We have been talking about birthdays and what they mean to us. We talked about what month our birthdays are in and we even got to celebrate Miss Swanson’s special birthday on Monday!!

This week we have been learning all about why we celebrate Bonfire Night. We learned about Guy Fawkes and his plans to blow up parliament. We shared all of our plans for the evening and even designed a special poster to raise awareness of how to keep ourselves safe. We were lucky enough to have a special visit from Fire Officer Steel who did a fabulous job of explaining all about his job and he also gave us some hints and tips on how to stay safe from fire.

Seeing it was bonfire night we wanted to explore lots of different media to create some fantastic art for our classroom.

We used salt, paint and PVA glue to design a firework picture.  It was tricky to create an explosion picture but the end result looked great.

We also cut up cotton buds and dipped them in various colours of paint and glued them onto a black background to create more firework explosion pictures. This was extremely tricky but it also       helps us to develop our fine motor skills too!

At the end of the day we went into the playground to create a whole class piece of art. We used a massive sheet of black paper and covered it in stripes of glue. We had such fun then throwing handfuls of glitter over the glue. Here is our finished product….

Homework superstars this week – Alfie and Archie with their fantastic 3D firework models . The boys were confidently able to share to the class how they went about building their models and which 3D shapes they used! Well done!

This week’s sound focus has been on the vowel ‘a’. We learned all about Inky’s vowel house and how this is a black tunnel sound coming from the back of our mouths. We did lots of fun activities to help us practise recognising and writing our new sound.

In numeracy we are practising counting in steps of 10 and 5. We have been using the 100 square to identify patterns and help us to count both forwards and backwards. Keep practising at home!

We are very much looking forward to opening up our classroom on Friday morning to showcase all of our super learning in the year 2019.

Reading Ambassadors

Children from P 2-7 have recently had the opportunity to apply for a post as a Deans Primary Reading Ambassador. If interested,  they had to complete an application form and informal interviews took place last week. Ten children were successful and will now have the exciting challenge of promoting Reading as a lifelong skill across the school.

Their first task was to visit Waterstones book shop in Livingston Centre to discuss various authors and to set up an account there. Each class is being given a sum of money to spend for their class library and can order books online or create a list that the class teacher can go and collect in person.

On Friday, the children involved, showed off the books they had each chosen on their visit for their respective classes, and reminded everyone to start spending!

What have P5 been up to this week?

Primary 3/4

Primary 3/4 have had a busy week this week!

This week in maths we were exploring the value of single digits within whole numbers up to 10,000. This allowed us to order sequences of numbers from largest to smallest and smallest to largest.

For our topic we used Google maps to explore the area we live in to gain an understanding of the term settlements. We followed on from this by exploring the whole of Scotland using an Atlas and identifying the major cities of our beautiful country.

In our writing, we explored our 5 senses to help us write a spooky poem. We used a lot of fantastic wow words to describe what we could smell, see, taste, touch and hear.

Our Primary 4’s had a fantastic morning out of School on Thursday for a local handball event at Craigswood sports centre. They were all fantastic and showed great sportsmanship. They done Deans proud.

To finish off the afternoon P3/4 visited our local Morrisons to learn more about our wider community. We enjoyed our tour of the store and learned a lot about the inner workings of our local supermarket.

Happy Halloween!

We have had another really busy week in Primary one.  The children have taken part in a number of math’s challenges (as you can see below) . We have been ordering and writing  numbers, counting in 10,s, drawing number collections as well as identifying number patterns.

You will have noticed that the children now have tricky words as well as sounds to learn. They are updated weekly and your support in helping them to read and recognize them is greatly appreciated.

We have had great fun reading  Room on the Broom. The children have been retelling and ordering the story , discussing the characters and even making a new broom! We challenged P1 and P2/1 to collected items from the field outside the school to make the witch a new broom. The children enjoyed this task and the discussions that went on were thoughtful and imaginative. New parts to make the broom go faster, a bigger broom for more characters etc.

A big thank you to all parents who put in a tremendous effort in making fantastic costumes. I took a group picture before the disco, looking at it today on the smart board they thought they looked “really scary”. Autumn and Halloween art have been a big focus. We have a tremendous Pumpkin Patch. The children used a range of media including marbling, paint washes, chalk, line and shape to create a variety of pumpkins.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.
