Primary 7 Transition
Primary 7 had their first transition of the year on Wednesday 6th November. We experienced high school life by attending different classes such as Art and Design, CDT, English, Geography and Science. The class are all looking forward to our next visit.
P6/7
Our class are looking forward to the school birthday celebrations tomorrow, (especially the ice cream!). We will be looking at the decade of the 1960’s as part of our school’s history and it would be great if you could pop along to join us. As previously mentioned some pupils have asked to dress up in 60’s fashion but this is entirely optional and not expected.
Pupils in class have been discussing how they would like to develop and improve the learning environment of their classroom. At Deans we are very lucky to have large, spacious rooms and want to make it as welcoming, relevant, and adapted to class personalities and interests as we can. There have been some great ideas so far regarding layout, lighting, displays, table and resource organisation. In the coming weeks we hope to pull these ideas together to make our classroom an even better place to be.
We have started our topic on Japan and look forward to finding out more about it. Next week our topic focus will be looking at how landscape and climate affect land use. We will also be comparing school and home life in Japan and Scotland.
P6/7
Last night many of our pupils enjoyed the Halloween disco and there were some great costumes on show.
In science this week we have been making paper helicopters to learn about air resistance, surface area and gravity. Next week we will apply our skills to make parachutes and learn about variables in experiments. We also learnt about Isaac Newton and his discoveries and tried out using force meters.
In writing this week we applied our descriptive skills to writing character descriptions. The characters we created will be involved in our story writing session on Monday.
Some pupils have been learning about order of operations in maths, whilst others have been developing skills in more challenging addition and subtraction calculations.
We are coming to the end of our block on basketball in PE and will be playing a small class tournament next week. Please remind your child that we have gym on a Tuesday and Wednesday as many pupils come without kit.
50th Birthday
Primary 7 are researching the 1960’s for the schools 50th birthday. They have decided to look at
- Entertainment – films, TV programmes, music
- Money
- Fashion
- School Life
- Livingston with a focus on Deans
- World News
We look forward to welcoming all family and friends on the 8th of November so we can share everything we have learned.
Primary 7’s Community Garden
Primary 7 have started work on the Community Garden. They have been working hard to clear an area for growing vegetables as soon as the spring is here.
We have begun writing to local businesses for both financial support and gardening equipment. If there are any family members who are able to help please contact the office and leave a message for Primary 7.
P6/7
P6/7 have settled down quickly after the October holidays. We are busy making plans for the celebrations to mark the school’s big birthday. Our class will be learning about events and life in the 1960’s and are planning activities to share with our visitors. Some pupils have asked if they can dress in 1960’s style clothing on the special day and it is completely optional. (Please don’t buy anything special for this as it’s just for the one morning.)
On another note tomorrow – 25th October – is a dress down day in school. If you would like to send in a donation, we are collecting money for our supported child Segenet from Ethiopia.
We have been revising basic maths processes for Smart start tasks in the morning and the class are enjoying this challenge. It would be really helpful if you could remind your child to learn their times tables at home. We have been working on place value and will move onto decimals and fractions next. Everyone is looking forward to it!
In literacy we have been developing our descriptive skills and your child should be able to tell you what similes, metaphors and personification are. Please ask them about this.
Before the holidays we were learning about natural disasters such as earthquakes. Our new topic this term will be Japan and everyone has great suggestions for aspects they would like to learn about.
In gym we have been developing skills in basketball and team games. The class are also loving the zumba sessions we use for brain breaks. We use the Go Noodle site for this which is free to access from home in case your child wants to try some zumba with you.
