Another Busy Week in P6!

Green Gym

Once again we were outside. This time we were designing habitats for various creatures to keep warm in the winter months. Using natural materials we had to create a place for the creature to stay. Then we tested if it would be warm enough. We did this by placing some hot water which was in a container in the den. Then using a thermometer we measured the temperature change of the water.

Kyle – Our creature was a hedgehog. It was supposed to be kept at 26 degrees celcius and it went down to 23. We think it would have died.

Emily-Our animal was too cold. It was fun.We worked together.

Bella – It was fun.

Numeracy

We continued to practise our addition skills. We learnt how to solve addition problems using our mental maths strategies. This week we added numbers larger than 1000.

We also practised using formal column addition for larger numbers and decimals and discussed when we would use this strategy.

Literacy

On Monday we had a remote learning lesson with Mrs Cochrane and we were able to practise our clarifying skills which help us to understand a text we are reading.

We practised our handwriting skills and some of us showed our beautiful work to Mrs Wallace(Oscar,Hope and Lily-Elen).

We practised learning our spellings by counting the number of syllables in each word.

In writing we persuaded people that school uniform should not be worn!

Topic Work – WW2

We continued to have to dive under our desks whenever our air raid siren went off!

We researched the different types of shelters used during the war using a non-fiction text and the laptops.

Hope – It is really scary! In the old days people didn’t have a mobile to make sure their friends were O.K.

We also had a WW2 workshop which was really interesting.

BOOK WEEK

It was also Scottish Book Week. We discussed our favourite books.

Bailey – My favourite book is ‘Grandpas Great Escape’ because it has a lot of adventure and action in it.

We also chose book characters and made props and hats for them.

Kyle – We made Willy Wonka’s stuff. I made a hat. Hope made the walking stick and Callum made the golden ticket.

Emily-Me and Lily made wands – like Harry Potter.

Kaiden – I made a suitcase that Paddington Bear carries.

PE – Football

Debbie – I have improved my tackling. I used to stay away from the ball and now I go and get the ball.

Lily-Elen – I am less scared of the ball. I faced my fear and am proud of my football skills.

P6/5 Friday 12th November

Following the recent feedback I am going to try to increase the presence of P6/5 on the blog.

This week in maths we have done long division. During this lesson SD, AD, SU, DW and MM were leading the learning. Also KH and SJR did some awesome work on their chimney sums. We have also been working on decimals, probability, continuing our work on times tables and fractions.

In literacy we have been writing pieces of exposition work on windsurfing and other hobbies. Our reading work has focused on summarising. We have also been able to incorporate our work on climate change and COP 26 into literacy.

EC, KM, LM, SJR, AS, SU, DW and EY have all demonstrated a very good understanding of what COP 26 is about.

For STEM this week we have made and improved (bumped up) paper aeroplanes. KM made an especially good one that flew far and was the most stable (the success criteria). We also made wind turbines from cut out card.

What Have P6 Been Up To This Week?

Literacy

We continued to practise our summarising skills in group reading.

In addition we had an online lesson with Mrs Cochrane who helped us practise all of our recipricol reading skills.

Numeracy

We continued to practise our addition skills. Also as part of our learning for Angles week we drew a treasure map and used the compass and angles to describe where the treasure was.

I.C.T

We practised our computer progamming skills using coding skills. It was great fun!

Topic

This week we learnt about air raid shelters. We practised diving under our desks when the siren went off and discussed how terrifying that must have been in real life during WW2.

Bella – I enjoyed this.

On Thursday we paid tribute to those that had lost their lives in conflict by taking part in a 2 minute silence.

Bailey – We made a poster about Remberance Day.

Leo – We made poppies.

Hope – We then put all the poppies together on green backing paper to make Flanders Fields.

Eco-Learning

As part of our work with Mrs Dobbie we are learning about waste.

Kyle-Jaxson and I painted bins.

Bailey-This is so people know which bins to use for recycling.

Health and Wellbeing

Emily – We made posters to represent what Health and Wellbing means at our school.

Prirmary 4/3’s Bug Hotel

Primary 4/3 have been working hard to maintain the Bug Hotel they started work on last year. Unfortunately, we believe that some children are continually playing on it and moving or removing some of the material. Can everyone please help by looking but not touching. Primary 4/3 are hoping that when it is set up properly that the everyone can use it for outdoor learning.

Kyle – I loved playing Mallets Mallet.

P6/5

This week we have been looking at the events in Glasgow, COP 26 and climate change.

For one of their activities related to this the children created and published web based interactive quizzes. I am trying to work out how you can all access them.

Watch this space!

Mr C

Happy Halloween from P6 !

We watched a creepy film and enjoyed extra friendship time. But we have been working hard all week too! We wrote spooky stories and practised the ‘Timewarp’ dance. Miss Dufton was very good!

We have continued with our topic on TIME.

Grace – I feel I am improving.

Debbie – I am getting better at am and pm.

Fraser – I enjoyed learning about time.

For spelling we have done another spelling test.

For reading we read a book that helped us understand how to make persuasive writing. We also read our group novels and did questions on them. We also did questions on COP 26. We read an article on the BBC to find out information to create and answer the questions.

Our new topic is now COP 26 and climate change.

In PE we did basketball. We practised dribbling and shooting.
