What have P6 been up to this week?

Health

This week we had a visit from Mark, who through our Headstrong sessions, is helping us with our mental health.

Kyle – We learnt about how other people might see us.

PE

Cameron – I enjoyed our last week of hockey. I now feel more confident in big games.

Bella – I enjoyed the hockey.

Numeracy

This week we learnt about money. In particular we learnt about the risks, costs and benefits of using cash, credit cards and debit cards.

Bailey – I liked learning about credit cards. You can spend large amounts!

Bella – But you can get a big bill! If you forget to pay you have to pay more.

Literacy – Writing

We worked with a partner to plan an exciting science fiction story. This will be written up next week.

Coding

This week we placed a timer in our coding sequence.

P6/5 Week ending Friday 11th February

Monday:

Extended writing on writers craft, continuing the narrative theme. The class created a story about “Sumo Joe”. The focus was on adverbs, similes and metaphors. EY was proud of their written work.

Maths was spent working on factors. JH excelled in this.

PE was spent working on hockey skills.

We also did a reading comprehension activity on the start of “Macbeth”.

Tuesday:

In Maths we continued work on factors and some of the class worked on prime numbers.

Literacy was spent bumping up narrative from the previous day as well as activities that will relate to world book day.

Today is internet safety day, and so we spent some time looking at how to keep ourselves safe online.

The class also really enjoyed coding with Mrs B

 

Wednesday:

Maths was spent working on angles. EY and MxD excelled.

Ms T worked with the class on some mental health activities.

The class were finishing their pocket garden designs  with Mrs D.

Thursday:

Amazing lesson on angles and directions.

More health activities on celebrating differences and getting to know more personal details about their class mates which generated great discussion. And in the afternoon even more mental health activities with Mark

 

Friday: Spelling, as usual.

PE: hand/eye coordination activities, also encouraging team work. Also creating our own class game: “Ball Tig”

Another Great Week In P6

Outdoor Learning!

One of our favourite activities this week was Green Gym outdoor learning with Alice. It was our last session so as a special treat we had a fire and ate toasted marshmallows and popcorn!

We even had a go at starting our own fires by using flint and steel and cotton covered with vaseline.

This was really tricky!

Anton, Kyle, Hope and Emily were great fire starters!

The marshmallows were delicious.

Bella – My mouth was covered in cream!

Hope – It looked like a meteroid!

Alexis didn’t like marshmallows so Miss Stanway got hers!

The popcorn was also tasty.

Kykle – The popcorn was very good!

 

Coding

Bailey – Learning to make sounds was fun!

Participation Friday!

We are painting rocks to sell and hide in the community. They have a positive message on them.

Hope – My rock turned out better than I thought! It was a bee and it says BEE HAPPY!

As part of LGBTQ+ month we discussed the importance of respect and tolerance.

What Have P6 Been Up To This Week?

PE

Kyle – I enjoyed playing hockey matches!

Brain breaks

Bella -I enjoyed the body percussion.

Outdoor Learning

Debbie-I enjoyed building the willow dome and playing hide and seek. (I was the last one to be found.)

Emily – Next week I am looking forward to th fire-pit and toasting marshmallows!

Emily was very good at tying the knots when we were building the willow structure.

Numeracy

Anton – I have improved my subtraction skills.

Literacy

Bailey – I liked learning about adverbs. An adverb describes a verb.

Digital Technology

Cameron – I enjoyed coding and presenting my propaganda PowerPoint to the class.

Bella – I am looking forward to painting the shed outside.

Wordle

Bailey – I like doing Wordle!

Debbie managed to guess a word in 4 this week at home before shool. (All by herself.)

Anton

Anton had a great week this week. He won the star award, the raffle, was chosen for the compliment poster and earnt a prize in maths!

P6/5 Week starting Monday 31st January  

Monday:

Extended writing on writers craft, continuing the narrative theme. The class watched the first part of a short animation called “Trapdoor”, and then finished writing the story themselves. The focus was on adjectives, similes and metaphors. KH was proud of their written work.

Maths was spent continuing work on percentages. SS, LM, LH and ShP excelled in this.

PE was spent working on tennis skills. MM, MxD, ShP and EY excelled in this.

We also started a KWL grid to support our learning on vertebrates and invertebrates.

Tuesday:

In Maths we were still working on percentages, with two groups using calculators. A third group started to revise place value.

Literacy was spent bumping up narrative from the previous day, continuing to focus on adjectives, similes, metaphors and speech marks. Two groups did this by writing up their work into a word document. MDs lead the learning on this, showing the class how to make a Folder in Teams. To link with this work in the afternoon, we continued “Macbeth”, with drama and a descriptive writing passage about the battle and the witches, still focussing on adjectives, similes, metaphors and speech marks.

 

Wednesday:

Maths was spent working on angles. EY and MxD excelled.

Some people spent time during literacy today bumping up the “Breakfast Time” work from the previous day, especially speech marks.

The class were also putting up fences around the bug hotel with Mrs Dobbie.

Thursday:

In maths today one group used calculators to help their understanding of fractions, division, decimals and percentages. Another group worked on their understanding of place value while the third group worked on ways to simplify percentages.

With Mrs D  the class started designing their Mars Rovers and did French days of the week and months of the year.

 

Friday:

Spelling, as usual.

PE: activities to support awareness of space. LI “Using appropriate movement skills I can often move about shared space without anyone bumping into me.”

Maths: review of all the work we have done so far this year, looking at learning intentions and how we can transfer the skills and use them in real life.

During the assembly LM, who had also won the star award, confidently and dramatically read their great story to the whole school.

During friendship time SU, EY and SD elected to teach each other science facts! Also LH shared an activity with some friends.

 

 

 

What have P6 been up to this week?

Literacy

We learnt about how important adverbs are when writing.

As part of our narrative science-fiction writing unit we imagined a planet and practised describing in detail.

Reading – We consolidated our prediction skills in group reading.

Maths

We learnt about how to create repeating patterns using shape and made some for our partners to complete.

Bailey – I liked designing posters about triangular and square numbers.

Topic

On Thursday it was ‘Holocaust Memorial Day’.

Jaxson – I liked the video we watched about Holocaust heroes who saved so many Jewish people.

Hope – We learnt about propoganda which was persuasive posters designed to make people help win the war.

Kyle – I liked doing the propoganda posters but I was not prepared for the air raid siren this week!

Bailey – I liked the ‘Dig for Victory’ poster because it would make people healthy.

P.E.

Isabella – I am proud of my hockey skills – my passing and scoring. Also I got the star award this week!

Monday:

Literacy focus on spelling Scottish words. Also extended writing on adventure stories. KH was proud of their written work.

Maths was spent looking at mathematical patterns.

Art focus was on looking at the work of Charles Rennie Macintosh.

 

Tuesday:

In Maths most of the class continued their work on percentages, with a small group engaging in more challenging material. Another continued their work reviewing what they have done so far.

The class also finished their extended writing pieces and continued with their personal projects.

We also filmed the maths video that the class had previously written the script for.

DW was proud of their knowledge of the geography of South America.

 

Wednesday:

Maths was a continuation of yesterday’s work on percentages.

In literacy today the class got their new spelling words and continued their work on Macbeth, creating drama about the battle scene, the three witches, Banquo and Macbeth. SJR proud of their ever developing reading. SS was proud of their spelling work.

The class were also making their own pocket garden with Mrs Dobbie!

Thursday:

Digital Day all day! Great fun! 100% of the class said they really enjoyed it.

There were three different activities: stop frame animation, keyboard skills and coding. AD, LM, EC, SD, ShP, DW, CB, AS, EY, JH and MM excelled in animation. The following people also excelled in coding: AS, AD, MM, SS, SU and KH. Finally the following excelled in their keyboard skills: LH, MxD, MM, EY, LM, SoP, EC, MDs, ShP, KH, DW and SU.

Friday:

Spelling, as usual.

Maths, looking at various activities relating to fractions and percentages, including net based.

PE: activities based on basketball, including space awareness, team-work development, shooting and dribbling. The greatest thing today was that SU was able to lead the learning and introduced the class to a passing practise activity.

 

P6/5 Week starting Monday 17th January

Monday:

Maths – All groups were looking at fractions again today; one group were looking at a problem solving activity that involved common denominators. They were also then given support to teach another group how to solve word problems.

Literacy – new spelling words out to all. Continuing work on our group reading books. Also started writing the script for a short film “How to use Loop Games”.

PE – team sports. Looking at strategies and applying these to a variety of team sports including football, hockey and dodgeball.

Tuesday:

Maths: still working on fractions, today we were looking at more complex multiple fractions of a whole number, and used this to help our ability to multiply and divide. A small also extended their learning by looking at word problems.

Literacy: extended writing on a narrative theme, with a focus on structure, similes, metaphors and adjectives.

In the afternoon we looked at coding with “Mrs B and the Beebots”.

Wednesday:

Assessments for both numeracy and literacy. One group also worked on writing questions about the text they were given on dog statues. Another group worked on story writing and characterisation. To support these activities we also used appropriate activities on Education City.

The class were also training to go to Mars with Mrs Dobbie!

Thursday:

Maths: finishing off work on fractions

Literacy: using questions about the groups reading texts that the children had created. Making notes for the answers and then transferring these into a short summary of the text.

Art with Ms T in the afternoon.

Friday:

Assembly, where RM got the star award for the class and the whole class won the peg challenge.

Maths: one group started a review of all the work they have done on Maths, another started work on percentages, with some of these also looking to extend their learning with more challenging resources.

 

What have P6 Been Up to this week?

Smart Starts – This week we have been playing Wordle every day. It is a game where you have to work out the unknown word. On Friday we solved the daily puzzle in just 4 tries! You might want to try : https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

Numeracy

This week was Patterns and Sequences focus week. We learnt about square numbers.

Bailey – I liked making patterns using shapes for my partner to continue.

In addition we also learnt more about rounding numbers.

PE

Bella – I enjoyed hockey and learnt how to dribble and pass. Now I need to get better at scoring.

Coding with Mrs Buntin

Emily – It was fun using the Bee Bots.

Bailey – I enjoyed coding and learnt how to make my own game.

Topic

Cameron – I enjoyed finishing my PowerPoint as part of our WW2 topic. It was about the blitz.

Bud!

We had a visit from Poppy Scotland who brought a van called Bud. We even got to make our own poppies and learnt a lot!

Alexis – I enjoyed learning about the death coin which was given when people passed away.

The World War One Memorial Plaque was made from Bronze and hence it was popularly known as the “Dead Man’s Penny” among front-line troops, also becoming widely known as, the “Death Penny”, “Death Plaque” or “Widow’s Penny”.
