This Week in Primary 5

This week in Primary 5 we have been given our new home learning sheet for the month along with our first week’s spelling words. We have been practising these in class and should continue to do so at home.

We have now been given our group reading books. We have started reading these in class and have made predictions on these already, saying what we think the book might be about and why we think this.

We have continued our Recount writing genre and this week we wrote a recount of our birthdays. Mrs Hillan went through each stage with us, sharing information on her birthday recount, and this gave us ideas for our’s. Read some of these below :

In Numeracy we did a number talk on addition, initially looking at 2 digit numbers, then we were given a 4 digit number to try. We could see that no matter how large the number was, the process was just the same! We also got an opportunity to look at some online numeracy games this week.

For our Novel Study this week, we created images of all the main characters for our display. We used what we had read to help us decide what they would look like.

We also created some questions in groups for some of the main characters in the story. We then used these to do a ‘hot-seating’ activity, where one of us pretended to be a character from the book and the rest of us took turns asking our questions. The person in the role of the character had to use their knowledge of them from the story to answer the questions as they may do. We all got a turn of being a character and asking questions.

Here are some photos of us creating our questions:

We look forward to another week of learning next week!

Highlights from Primary 5

This week we have continued working hard in Primary 5. We have finished off assessments in  Reading and  Numeracy and Maths.

In Reading we have continued our Novel Study. We have discussed and noted down any favourite parts from the story so far. We found out that Zoe’s Dad worked in an ice cream factory and have created posters to advertise all the different flavours of ice cream.

We continued with our Recount writing genre this week too. This week we imagined we had been on a trip to the moon and retold the events of this. We went through an example with Mrs Hillan, and then created our own recounts.

For Art this week we created some self portraits. We looked at how we can draw all of the features on the face accurately. These are some of our drawings in progress:

For PE just now we are working on Basketball skills. We have been learning the chest pass, bounce pass, single hand dribbling and double hand dribbling. We have also began working on our shooting skills. Here are some photos of us in action:

This week in Primary 5!

This week we have continued with our fantastic learning in Primary 5! We have completed some other assessments in Spelling and Reading and have started some in Numeracy and Maths. These will continue next week.

In Reading we have started our Novel Study. Our book is Ratburger by David Walliams. We started off by making predictions of what we thought the book was going to be about based purely on the title. Here are some of our thoughts:

Erin R – It will be about a place where rats are cooked or the hamburger pates are made from rats.

Ariah – It’s going to be about a man who goes into a restaurant every day and order a burger and puts a rat on it and eats it.

Daniel – It is going to be about a rapper who loves burgers.

Ciaran – It is going to be about a cook who makes a burger with a rat inside.

Then Mrs Hillan read the blurb and asked us again. Here are some other predictions:

Caelan – It is going to be about a really hungry man who puts anything on a burger.

Holly – It will be about a man who wants to cook someone’s rat.

Lewis D – It will be about a man who looks for a rat in a restaurant to put in a burger.

Gracie – It will be about a man who cooks a rat and brings it to the wrapping station and makes the rat dance.

Ariah – It will be about a the girl feeding a rat burger to the bully.

We started a new writing genre this week too – Recount. This is where we have to retell and evaluate events and experiences. We went through an example with Mrs Hillan, and then created our own recounts of our first day back at school.

We look forward to seeing what next week brings!

Welcome Back from Primary 5!

Back To School Mickey Mouse GIF - Back To School Mickey Mouse Apple GIFs

Welcome back everyone!!! It has been so nice to see everyone back in school this week and hear everyone’s stories about their Summer!

This week we have spent quality time listening to each other share our news of our holidays as well as going over any news for the next few weeks and the year ahead. We had a COVID update and started to think about our Class Charter so that we can get this created and displayed next week.

We wrote and drew pictures for some of the highlights of our Summer and these will be added to a class display. We also created some cool name tags for our pegs in the cloakroom.

We created some handwashing posters to remind ourselves and each other about the importance of washing our hands regularly. We must also remember to sanitise regularly too.

This week we have completed our first spelling baseline test so that we become familiar with new spelling patterns and improve our spelling skills. We have also done a bit of recapping of our addition and subtraction skills to get our brains in gear again! We will focus on this for the next couple of weeks to make sure we are confident with this again.

We have been set a task by Mrs Stewart to think about which After School Clubs we would like to see available and which Leadership groups we would like to be part of. Mrs Hillan will gather our ideas next week.

Looking forward to another week of learning next week!
