This Week in P3

Literacy

In writing this week, we continued to develop our skills when writing a descriptive piece. We looked at a few examples and assessed each piece of writing. Then we read our feedback from last week and used this to up-level our writing. This week, we were describing a female rugby player. We used the describing bubble to help us structure our description.

In reading this week we were focusing on our summarising skills. This is where need to tell a friend what the text was about. We have to only include the important details.

Maths

In numeracy this week, we continued to develop our multiplication skills. Some of us were looking at the 3 and 4 times tables. We also had a class number talks where we discussed the different strategies we could use to calculate the answer. We also played multiplication games such as times table bingo.

IDL

For our sports topic this week, we looked at ‘The Football Players’ (1908) by Henri Rosseau. Henri Rosseau was famous for his abstract paintings. We discussed the meaning of abstract and then identified what made this painting abstract. Then, we designed our own abstract painting representing a sporting event.

Literacy

In writing this week, we started learning about descriptive writing. We were learning about the correct structure of this genre. As a class, we identified that we read descriptive writing when we are buying products online. Then we wrote about the special place we imagine during yoga.

Maths

This week, we started our multiplation topic. We were learning to use arrays and repeated addition to help us calculate the answer.

IDL

This week, we were learning about the history of the paralymics. The sports originally started to help soldiers recover from their injuries. As a class, we used our clarifying skills to help us understand the meaning of equality and inequality.

For PE, we were continuing to develop our hockey techniques. We have been using our blocking, shooting and Indian dribbling skills.

Outdoor Learning

Once again Deans Primary have received a donation of saplings from the Woodland Trust. The children are not only hoping this will enhance the look of the school grounds but begin to support a Net Zero Community and improve the environment.

The children would like to ask all children, staff, parents, carers and members of the community to help us look after the saplings so they get the opportunity to grow into large, strong trees. Since they are newly planted and have not yet taken root we would appreciate it if you could stay away from the trees. If you see or hear of any issues with the trees can you please get in touch with Mrs Dobbie.

Literacy

This week was the last week of our narrative writing. We had to read over our feedback and try and up-level our writing. We were writing about a spring adventure. We watched a short video about the things we may see in spring and added in this detail to our story. We had use our imagination to think of a complication which would make the reader want to read on. After we had finished writing, we swapped jotters with our elbow partner and we peer assessed our work using the success criteria.

In reading this week, we were reading a passage to find information. We read a passage about Pancake Day and we learnt lots of fun facts. Pancake Day is also known as Shrove Tuesday and is the day before lent begins. We had to use our decoding skills to help us sound out unfamiliar words. Then, we were using our skimming and scanning skills to help us answer questions about the text.

Maths

In our time topic, we continued to learn about converting analogue and digital times. We were also learning about writing the correct time in words. In addition to this, we started to introduce 5 minute intervals on the analogue clock.

IDL

For our sports topic, we continued to study the heart. This week, we carried out an experiment to see what happened to our heartbeat as we exercised. For the majority of us, we observed that our heartbeat increased as we exercised. Therefore, we investigated why our heart beats faster during exercise. We found out that this happens because our heart is pumping oxygen all around our body.

Literacy

In writing this week, we were continuing to use our imagination to create a story to entertain the reader.  As a class, we looked at two examples and peer assessed each of them. We noticed that the example with the adjectives and connective words had a better story line. Then, we went on to write a spooky story using the correct structure.

For reading, we were looking at developing our predicting skills. When predicting, we have to use the text and pictures to help us determine what will happen next. We were making predictions throughout the story and we had to either write or draw what we think would come next.

Numeracy

This week, we continued to develop our subtraction skills. We have been using our Number Talks to discuss different strategies we can use to calculate the answer to an equation or worded problem.

We have also been continuing to look at missing number equations. We have to use critical thinking skills to work out the missing number.

IDL

In our topic, we have been looking at the history of the Winter Olympics. We have been learning that the first Winter Olympics was in 1924 and the different types of sports that took place during the Winter Olympics.

Additionally, we have been learning about the heart. As a group, we had to create a heart model using coloured water, straws, balloons and plastic bottles. This represented the heart as a pump.

Literacy

In reading this week, we have been developing our skim reading skills. We were given a passage about winter sports and then we had to answer questions about the text. We were highlighting the key words in the question and skimming through the passage until we read those words. We would then read around the key words to find and highlight the information to help us answer the question.

During our narrative writing this week, we created a roll and write Valentine Story. We had to roll a dice and the number would tell us who our characters were, where our setting was and what the problem was. Then we had to use our imagination to develop a storyline to entertain the reader. We were focusing on using adjectives and connecting words to add in extra details to our stories.

Maths

This week, we were looking at addition and subtraction word problems. We had to use our critical thinking skills to help us work out what the question was asking us to do. Some of us underlined the key details in the question and then wrote the equation we were asked to solve.

We have also been continuing to develop our skills when telling the time. We have been stopping throughout the day to read the time on the clock. We have also been converting analogue time to 12 hour digital time.

IDL

As a class, we have voted for sports to be our IDL topic. We have made a plan about things we would like to learn throughout this topic.

In RME, we were learning about the Christian Bible story of Noah’s Art. We watched a video of the story and then had a class discussion about this story. We also had to write a summary of this Bible story and include all the key details.

Literacy

In writing this week, we continued to develop our storyline during our narrative writing. We were writing about a winter story. We had to develop our setting and a character.

We continued to develop our reciprocal reading skills by summarising our text. We had to only write about the most important details.

Maths

In maths, we continued to develop our subtraction skills. We were looking at worded problems and had to use our critical thinking skills to understand what the question was asking.

IDL

For our Christianity topic, we were learning about the bible story of Adam and Eve. Christians believe these were the first humans and they lived in the garden of Eden until they ate the forbidden fruit.

LiteracyIn reading this week, we have been developing our reciprocal reading skills. We also had to create questions about the text to ask a friend. We then had to identify the key details of the story in order to summarise the text.In writing this week, we continued to develop our narrative writing skills. We were using our imagination to create a story about a magic key. We had to read over our work to check that we had used our core writing targets.MathsIn maths this week, we were continuing to learn about time. We were focusing on o’clock and half past. Throughout, the day we would check the time on the analogue clock. In numeracy, we continued to look at subtraction. We were learning about the column subtraction method. This is where you take away the ones colum and then the tens. With some equations, we needed to regroup.IDLIn RME, we were looking at the Christan bible story. We were learning about Jonah and the whale. As a class, we had create a discussion about moral decisions Jonah had to make and what our personal views were on these decisions.

In our writing this week, we were using our imagination to write a story about an accident. We had to read over our next steps from last week to ensure we were challenging ourselves.

Maths

This week, we were learning about subtraction. We had to use an effective strategy to help us solve the equations. Some of us have been using number lines, counters, partitioning and the column subtraction method.

IDL

On Thursday, we had a fantastic time at our digital day! Mrs Buntin had organised a variety of fun activities. Throughout the day, we worked our way around 3 stations. We were learning to code on the Bee-Bots and the iPad. We also created stop frame animations, which is where we create a film through moving the props and taking pictures. These have been uploaded to Seesaw so you can see your short films. We were also developing our typing skills, by logging into the laptop and then playing a keyboard game.
