This Week in P3/2

Literacy

We continued to develop our skills for narrative writing. We had to write an imaginative story about an accident. We used the narrative story mountain which helps us to develop our story line. We learned about the complication which is the part that makes the reader want to read on.

“We had to write in paragraphs and use the correct structure.”

We have also been learning to use a dictionary to find the meaning of words. During reading, we were sounding out unfamiliar words. We were also developing reading with expression. After we read our stories we had to ask our friends a questions about the text to enhance our questioning skills.

Maths

This week, we were continuing to develop our division skills. We were looking at word problems which can be challenging because you are not given the equations. We have to use our problem solving skills to work out what the question is asking and then solve the equation.

“We have been dividing, this is another way of saying sharing.”

“We have been dividing in 2s, 3s, 4s and 10s.”

“We were working as bakers and we had to divide the cakes equally between the people.”

IDL

In IDL, we were looking a city landscapes. We were looking at the detail and texture of the buildings. Then, we looked some examples of landscapes and we were given the opportunity to choose a landscape of Edinburgh to represent.

For our world of work topic, we were identifying our skills and linking them to jobs we would like. Then, we had to prepare notes to explain the type of job we would like to our peers.

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

We were learning to improve our vocabulary during Word Boost. We were introduced to 6 boost words and their meaning. When we hear a boost word, we have to put our finger on our nose and explain the meaning of the word. We also played the miming game, this is where one person has to mime out the boost word and the class have identify what the boost word is.

We were also developing our skimming and scanning skills during our reading comprehension. This is where we have to identify the key words within the question and skim read the text to find the answer.

For writing this week, we started learning about narrative writing. We were introduced to the structure we have to use for this genre and we created a narrative piece in small groups. Afterwards, we peer assessed each groups work and identified the areas of success and areas that they could improve on.

Maths

This week, we continued to develop our division skills. We were using our jotters to solve equations from the textbook. During number talks, we looked at division word problems. This is challenging as you have to initially work out what the question is asking you to do. We then discussed the different strategies we could use to calculate the answer.

IDL

For art this week, we were creating various landscapes. We were using pencils and we had to use different techniques to create different textures.

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

We have been practising our spelling words this week. We have been practising using our rainbow writing, playdoh writing and writing our words on a whiteboard with our eyes closed.

For writing this week, we were writing an explanation for the role of a firefighter. We had to take notes when we were researching the role. These notes helped us add detail to our explanation sequences.

Numeracy

This week, we began our new division topic. Dividing is a way of sharing something. We were learning about different strategies we could use to help us solve an equation. We could use our fingers to skip count. We would count the number of fingers we have up and that would be our answer.

We could also draw circles and then draw dots to share within the circles. We would share these equally and count the amount of dots in the circle.

IDL

For our world of work topic, we began researching the jobs we would like to have when we are older. We had to research the skills and attributes required for these roles.

For music this week, were we listening to L’hom Arme by Robert Morton. We had to identify the different instruments we could hear. We also discussed how this music made us feel.

This week in P2

It has been a busy week in P2!

Spelling

We have been trying out some new spelling games to learn our words. Some of these include spelling tennis, dice spelling and squat and spell.

Maths

We are continuing to learn about telling the time. We played a game of matching pairs to help warm us up with both digital and analogue clocks.

HWB

We spoke about people we trust and people we don’t trust. We had to collaborate as a team to decide who was in our inner circle of trust and who was in our outer circle of trust.

Writing

This week, we were learning about the role of a firefighter. We had to take notes from a video to help us write our Explanation piece.

P.E.

Because the weather wasn’t great today, we did P.E. in the classroom. We were practising our football skills using bean bags, and even had the chance to turn the carpet into a football pitch for a few matches. Ethan was the class champion out of all 20 games!

Long Weekend | Tales From An Open Book

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

During reading this week, we were developing our questioning skills. We took notes during our class novel to help us construct a question. When taking notes, we only wrote the important parts and did not write in sentences. Using our notes, we constructed a question and gave it a friend to answer.

Think week, we continued to develop our explanation writing skills. We had to explain the life cycle of a frog. It is very important that the title informs the reader of the content.

“We were writing explanation sequences of the life cycle of a frog” S.C.

“At the sequence explanation part we have to use the words, first, next and then.”  S-L.W.

Maths

This week, we finished our times table topic. We were using the knowledge we have developed through this topic to help us tackle multiplication word problems. These can be challenging as we need to use our problem solving skills to calculate the answer.

“I have been using the pop its to calculate the answer. If it’s 2 x 2 I pop 2 along the way and I pop 2 down the way and then count the total.” B.P.

We were linking our multiplication to our word of work topic. In P3/2 we created our own bakery. We were given an equation and had to make cakes and add candles to the cakes to solve the equations.

“We used our times tables when working in the bakery. We had to put the candles in the cakes and find the total.” K.M.

Health and Wellbeing

For our topic of relationships we were looking at friendships. We had to identify the traits we look for in a friend and had to think about why these traits are important. During our class discussion, we identified that a lot of the traits we look for in a friend were also our school values.

During P.E., we were developing our football skills. We had to gain control of the ball when dribbling. We were also passing the ball to our team mates. This involved us adjusting our technique depending on where our team mates were.
