What a busy and quick week it has been in Primary 1B. We have had our special Christmas lunch and we would like to say a huge thankyou to the dinner ladies for working so hard to ensure we had a delicious meal.
This week in Literacy we have been learning two new words, ‘go’ and ‘into’ alongside the new sounds ‘l’ and ‘g’. We have also been writing to Father Christmas to share our Christmas lists with him. We explored how to write a letter and what details we needed to include, like Dear and From.
We have been working hard to develop our reading skills. This week we have been introduced to two different types of reading skills tasks. The first task was called a cloze activity. This is when a word is missing from the text and we need to figure out what the missing words are. Here are some examples of our work.
The second reading task was a fun one! We were given a jumbled up sentence from our reading book. We had to read the sentence and put the words back into the correct order. We could use the clues in our book to help us and knowing where a capital letter and full go really helped us too.
During our yoga session this week we went to the Winter Olympics and were learning to move our bodies around in a safe space. We made different shapes to represent particular winter Olympic events, such as, snow boarding and skiing. I still think that our favourite part of yoga is the sleepy and relaxing savasana at the end! A big thank you goes out to Sonja and Ruth at Lotus Learn Yoga for planning such fun activities for us to complete in the safety of our classroom.
We are looking forward to our final week of term when we can take part in lots of Christmas craft activities and maybe even bring home a few Christmas presents for the adults at home.
This week in health and wellbeing we have moved slightly away from our focus on bullying onto the qualities that make a good friend. We discussed all of the friends we have and why we are friends with them. We shared what quality made us a good friend. Here are some of our examples.
Leighton – I cheer my friends up if they are sad.
Kellan – I like to do kind things for my friends.
Lucy – I always play nicely with my friends.
Reuben – I like to draw pictures for my friends
Finlay – I like to include all my friends in the things I do.
We designed and made friendship tokens which showed us being a good friend. Jack and Finlay even began writing some kind notes for their friends, well done boys on showing kindness – I think we all agree that is the most important quality in a friend!
We watched the story ‘Frog and Toad are friends’. We loved seeing all the different ways that Frog and Toad helped and cared for each other. They were such great friends.
Literacy
This week in our writing session we thought we would get into the Christmas spirit and share why we like Christmas. There were lots of fantastic reasons given by everyone . I think we all agreed that Reuben’s idea was the most heart warming. He shared that he loved Christmas so much because he got to have a huge family dinner with everyone. We continue to focus on our core targets, and we have having a BIG push on trying to remember finger spaces in our work. Here are some of our fantastic end results.
This week our new common words are ‘he’ and ‘my‘. We are working hard reading and writing all of these words everyday. Keep practising at home everybody!
The new sounds focus for this week are d and u. Now we know all of the vowel sounds we are able to build lots of new words, this will be a big focus for us right up to Christmas. We have been building words using the magnetic letters, paddle boards and we have been playing lots of new games to help us develop these skills.
Maths
We have been continuing to focus on 2D shapes and started to get to grips with the names of some familiar 3D shapes.
Christmas Preparations
This week saw us start our Christmas preparations with the beginning of advent. Our Classroom Christmas trees are up and Frosty the snowman is on our classroom door to welcome the children in the morning.
We have started to learn a special Christmas Poem for a very special project. Here is copy for you to help you child to practise at home (you will also find a paper copy in the red home work folders)
On Monday, Mrs Buntin demonstrated how to use a piece of exciting new technology called Stop Frame Animation. We all got a turn to have a go at developing our class scene for the whole school nativity. It was great fun and the end result will be amazing, we are so exited to see it!
We have also decorated our own special Christmas Bauble with Christmas design. Miss Borsby’s dad has very kindly offered to engrave children’s names onto each decoration. We can’t wait to see what they look like!
Have a fantastic weekend everybody. Stay cosy!
Another little reminder for children not to bring in toys from home at the moment due to all the current restrictions in place to keep everyone safe.
This week in health and wellbeing we have been continuing to focus on the topic of bullying. We have been discussing strategies to help us should we ever be a victim of bullying or should we see it happening in our playground. Here are some of our very sensible suggestions.
Jack – I would find out who the bully is and tell a teacher.
Saatvik – I would stick up for my friend and tell the bully to stop.
Cooper – I would help my friend to stop crying and play with them to keep them safe.
Kaleb – I would tell one of my trusted adults.
This week in our yoga session we were learning how to perform some yoga animal poses. We visited old Macdonald’s farm and had great fun being flapping chickens, galloping horses and dogs searching for bones! We are really enjoying our yoga sessions. Here are some examples of how it makes us feel.
Jack – Yoga makes me feel so calm and relaxed.
Mikah – Yoga makes me sit quietly.
Cooper – Yoga makes me patient.
Kaleb – Yoga makes me so happy.
Literacy
This week we reach our final week for focusing on the Persuasive writing genre. We have worked hard on this particular writing area and are feeling confident showcasing our learning with you all on our special videos (watch this space!) This week we have been writing about why reading is so important. Here are some examples of our work.
We were able to share verbally and through our sentences some of the reasons we believe reading is so important.
Arianna – I like reading because it is fun.
Alfie – I like reading because it is good for you.
Reuben- I like reading because it can make your brain smart.
Saatvik – I like reading because if you know how to read you can do anything.
We have also been learning two new common words, me and we. Our new sounds this week have been h and d.
Our word boost story this week has been ‘The Frightened Little Owl’, by Mark Ezra. We have enjoyed listening to the story and completing all the different activities. We are excellent at using and recognising all of the word boost words we have learned so far we are even beginning to understand the colours of the words and what they mean. (yellow – describing words- adjectives and red are doing words -verbs) This week’s Boost words are – familiar, tremble, tumble and vanish.
Maths
This week we have had a new focus for our maths work. We have been learning to recognise and name 2D shapes. We have been discussing their properties, how they look and how they feel. We have been using mathematical language such as edges, sides and corners as well as all the correct names for a number of 2D shape. It has been a bit of a challenge remembering the properties of a pentagon, hexagon and an octagon. Throughout the week we have been spotting all of these shapes within our classroom. Here are some of the activities we have been investigating to help us develop this skill.
We hope you have enjoyed our blog update for this week.
This week in health and wellbeing we have been focusing on the word bullying, what it means, what it looks like and what we should do if we ever encounter it ourselves. We discussed that bullying is something which, happens over and over again, is deliberate and can happen when more than one person is doing the bullying. We decided that we would definitely not tolerate any bullies in Primary One and we made up slogans to prevent this from happening. Our class slogan is ‘No Bullies Here’.
We have also continued to focus on recognising our emotions and how we deal with different emotions. We have been drawing portraits of ourselves and how we look when we are feeling a certain way. We discussed strategies to help us and shared ideas of different things we can do when we feel sad or scared. We had some wonderful suggestions, such as, find a friend to talk to or play some music.
Literacy
In literacy this week we have been working hard using the magnetic boards to blend and segment words like, cat, fat, mat. We have learned about word rhyming families and how we can use them to help us to spell these new words. Our new sounds this week have been e and f. On Thursday we made some fantastic e ‘Elmos’ to decorate our class and to help us recall the shape of the letter as it can be a tricky one to get right!
As we continue to work on developing our persuasive writing skills this week we were giving our opinion on whether we like pets. We wrote 2 sentences, I like pets. Pets are… and we had to fill in the last part of the sentence with our opinion.
Here are some of our opinions.
Finlay – I like pets. Pets are friendly and are cute.
Jake – I like pets. Pets are cute and cuddly.
Arianna – I like pets. Pets are nice.
Jack – I like pets. Pets are cute.
We continue to enjoy reading our word boost stories. This week’s words are from Katie Morag and the Two Grandmothers. These words have definitely been the trickiest so far but we have made a great attempt at remembering their definitions and trying to use them everyday when we are talking. These are the words we have focused on.

Numeracy
We have been exploring different ways to represent teen numbers this week. We have used Numicon, ten frames and made cube towers. We continue to develop our addition skills through making and counting out collections of numbers.
It has been a very busy week in Primary 1B and we are ready for a break at the weekend. Please remember to bring in reading books everyday and a gentle reminder that as a health promoting school children will only be allowed to drink water in class.
This week in health and wellbeing we have been focusing on completing activities for children in Need. We are very excited to dress up in colourful spots on Friday! We have been thinking about how we can ‘connect’ with our friends. We discussed all of the different things which make a good friend. We shared with the class examples of how we feel about our friends.
Saatvik – Kaleb runs with me so he is my friend and I like him.
Alfie – Leighton is always kind to me.
Kellan – Saatvik always plays and includes me in his games.
We also have been learning all about why we take part in Children in Need activities. We watched a powerpoint and learned some very interesting facts. Did you know that since Children in Need started it has raised over a billion pounds for children who are less fortunate than ourselves. That’s pretty amazing! We had a chance to decorate our own Pudsey bears with bright and colourful spots.
We were also very, very lucky to have an exciting online yoga lesson from the fabulous yoga teacher Mrs Anderson from Lotus Learn Yoga. We got to meditate at the start wearing our special yoga glasses and then we learned some new super stretchy poses like the cat, cow and the horse. Finally, after all that stretching and breathing we got to have a ‘savasana’ which is when we could lie on our backs and blow out little air bubbles. It was very relaxing and we look forward to taking part in another session again soon.
Literacy
This week as we continue to work on the Persuasive writing genre we have been sharing our opinion on why we like to play. We learned and used the fancy new joining word ‘because’ to explain our opinion and link up our ideas.
Cooper – I like to play because it is fun and I play with Finlay at the park.
Alfie – I like to play because it is friendly.
Jake – I like to play because it is fun.
This week we wrote ‘I like to play because it is……’. We had some excellent writing examples from all the boys and girls.
Numeracy
This week we have been movie stars during our numeracy time. Mrs Stevenson has been recording us playing our favourite number games. We are very excited to share this learning with you all very soon. Watch this space for our film debut!!
Remembrance Day
This week we celebrated Remembrance day. We discussed all about why we celebrate this day and what the poppy flower means. It was very interesting and we were incredibly respectful during our 2 minute silence on Wednesday. One of our activity stations this week was to create a poppy picture using a printing technique. These are some of our fabulous creations.
To round up our weekly blog I would like to remind parents and carers to continue to send in the red reading folders everyday so we can continue to deliver quality reading experiences for your child.
As we continue to focus on the topic of Celebrating our Differences, we have been identifying how we are different and what exactly makes us special. It was very interesting to hear about everybody’s unique talents, abilities or little quirks which make us the person we are. Here are some of the examples which we shared with each other.
Finlay – I am good at writing words and that makes me special.
Kaleb – I am learning my name and how to write it and that makes me feel special.
Lucy – I am really good at playing games and that makes me special.
Leighton – I can ride my bike without stabilisers and that makes me feel special.
We are working together with Primary 1A to build a special display to highlight our hard work in Health and Well Being over the last few weeks. We will share the finished result with you when it is ready.
Literacy
This week we have had a focus on building and extending our vocabulary. We have been using a new and exciting programme called Word Boost. Each week we focus on a new story and learn all about 4 exciting and ambitious WOW words. This week we read the story Leo’s Dream by Antonie Schneider. Our boost words were –
Celebrate
Reply
Investigate
Enormous
Parents should have received a special ‘parent postcard’ detailing our new words to practise using in everyday conversation in the red homework folders.
We have devised a secret signal for when we hear a boost word being spoken, we will tap our noses. Suffice to say there has been lots of nose tapping this week. It has been great fun learning about these words and matching them up with pictures. We even had a go at drawing our own pictures too….
We now know that there are different types of words. Words which are coloured yellow are adjectives (describing) and red words are verbs (doing words).
Numeracy
This week we have been continuing our hard work with teen numbers and using the ten frames to represent these numbers.
We have also been working on recognising number words and matching the numeral to the word or the collection. We have been enjoying using the laptops in the class to develop this tricky skill.
A great game we have discovered is ‘Numbers to Words Fruit Shoot’ on the topmarks website. Here is the link to have a go at home.
We are getting really good at describing how we see dot patterns and now we can use the = and + symbols when recording a number story.
Bonfire Night
Seeing this Thursday is Bonfire night we have been learning a little bit about the history behind why we celebrate bonfire Night on the 5th of November. We discussed how Guy Fawkes had a plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Mrs Walker set up a fun activity where we could practise our printing and colour mixing skills. We made the most beautiful fireworks pictures and even added a little sparkle too.
We hope everyone has a happy and safe Bonfire night and a lovely weekend when it comes.
This week in Primary 1 we have been working hard to improve our literacy skills. We have started reading for ourselves! To start with our books feature only pictures, but this means we can use the pictures to tell the story in our own words. This is one of the targets we are focusing on in class. Whilst exploring our new books we have been discussing the setting, this means where the story takes place. We drew pictures to describe this as well as having ago at writing a simple sentence. We have also been introduced to all the characters we will be reading about. Their names are Kipper, Biff, Chip, Mum, Dad and of course Floppy. You will hear lots and lots about them over the coming months.
We have been learning the new sound t and i, we can identify the sound and we are becoming experts at writing them too. Our new words this week were ‘and’ and ‘it’.
In writing, we have been learning how to give our opinion. This week we wrote about what we felt about Halloween. Here are some of the sentences we wrote.
Saatvik – I think Halloween is great.
Cooper – I think Halloween is exciting.
Alex – I think Halloween is good.
Sophie – I think Halloween is scary.
We have been working really hard to write tricky words on our own and to use the sounds we know to help us with spelling. We have been remembering to use our targets, this week we had a focus on using a capital letter, a full stop and putting finger spaces in between the words. Here are some examples of our work.
Numeracy
As we continue to focus on teen numbers we found a great game to play that not only helps us to recognise teen numbers but helps us to develop that skill of subitising (seeing the amount without counting) on a ten frame. Here are some pictures of us in action.
Halloween
It is a shame that we can’t properly celebrate Halloween this year. In Primary One we have decided to make our classroom a bit spookier by creating our own bright orange pumpkins. After reading the story ‘Pick a Pumpkin’ by Patrica Toth we discussed all the different Halloween traditions that our families follow. Carving pumpkins was the most common one! Here are our spooky Halloween pumpkins.
Happy Halloween everyone! We hope you have a suitably spooktastic evening even if it is a little bit different this year.
It has been a very short and quick week in Primary 1B but we have still managed to squeeze in lots of fun learning, here are some of our highlights.
Literacy
On Wednesday we were all excited to be back in school, seeing our friends and chatting about our holidays. We shared with each other all the fun things we got up over the October break and we drew pictures to go alongside our reports. We are getting very confident with using the sounds we know to help us in our writing.
We have also been learning all about sound ‘n’. It is a long stretchy sound, which we use the tip of our tongue on the roof of our mouth to help make the sound. We have been making the shape of the sound using play-dough and practising writing it in our jotters. It is very easy to get n confused with m so we need to think about what our mouth is doing to make the sound.
Health and Well Being
This week we have been talking about emotions. We watched some clips from the movie ‘Inside Out’ and we had to guess which emotion was being portrayed by the character. Below is the link if you want to have another go at home. We had to share why we chose which emotion and then we shared times when we felt that emotion. We found that we had lots of things in common, one being we are mostly all scared of spiders and we feel sad when somebody gets hurt.
We had a go at using our drama and miming skills by playing emotions charades. It was great fun and we had some very dramatic emotions portrayed. One of our favourite characters was ‘Anger’. We practised our listening skills and pencil control by following instructions to draw the character Anger. We were pretty proud of our efforts and they looked fantastic in the end – we will add some pictures to the blog next week when they are completely finished.
Numeracy
We have been continuing to develop our knowledge of numbers up to 20. We are currently learning about teen numbers and today our magic number was 11. We have been investigating all the different ways to make and display 11. We have been counting forwards and backwards from different starting points and finishing at 11 and we have been making collections of 11 and practising our counting skills.
This week in health and well being we have been talking about our worries. This can be an especially worrying time for some children so it was a nice opportunity to speak openly about anything which has been worrying us. Together, we listened to the story of Silly Billy by Anthony Browne.
Billy had lots of different worries, some of which seemed a little ‘silly’ like being worried about shoes and rain. We discuss how no worry is really silly and how it is important to share our worries with our friends or an adult we trust. After sharing some of our worries, we fed our worries to the worry monster by drawing a picture of them in his tummy.
We have introduced ‘bubble time’ in our class, if we feel worried or would like to talk to a grown up we can request bubble time in the afternoon to simply have a chat and chase that worry away.
Literacy
In literacy this week we have been learning the new sound ‘a’. We now know that this is a vowel, a black tunnel sound, where we have to open our mouths really wide to form the sound. Alongside this sound we have been learning about Inky’s Vowel house. Below is a picture of the vowel house. There is a story to go with each picture. We are very good at remembering the actions and the sounds which go with the story.
Attached below is a copy of the story behind each sound/picture in the vowel house.
To help us remember the shape of the letter we made some ‘ant a’s’ for our classroom display.
New word focus –
Last week we learned all about three new words, I , the and a. This week we have introduced the word ‘am’. We are able to write and recognise this word. We had a word hunt in our classroom and had to find and sort all the words we know so far into hoops. We then competed against each other in ‘word splat’. It was great fun. We even used the new word in our writing task this week, check out our fantastic sentences.
Numeracy
This week we have been ordering numbers to 20. Every morning we can choose a number card and as a class we order the numbers all the way up to 20. We are now getting very quick and confident when recognising teen numbers. Mrs Stevenson is very sneaky sometimes and is our class number thief. We need to figure out which number she has stolen! It is lots of fun….
We have also been learning about the magic number 10! How to write it, how to make collections of ten and how to make ten in all sorts of different ways.
We have been continuing our work on subitising by practising this game with our friends.
We are definitely ready for our October holidays. It has been such a busy term and now it is time for a well earned rest. We will welcome all the children back to school on Wednesday 21st of October. Have a lovely break.
This week in health and well being we have been talking about the word ‘Achieving‘, what is means and how it can make us feel. We explored some pictures of different people achieving something, someone had just climbed a mountain and another person was working hard on completing a writing task. We had a discussion about all the things we would like to achieve during our time in Primary One. Here are some of the things we discussed.
Arianna – I would like to be able to write a story by myself.
Saatvik – I would like to be able to read all the books in our class library.
Finlay – I would like to be able to work with very big numbers.
Mikah – I would like to be able to learn how to write all of the letters in the alphabet.
We discussed how achieving these different things would make us feel. We were able to use words such as, happy, proud, excited and someone even said they would feel crazy!! We drew pictures and shared with Mrs Stevenson our ideas. Here are some photographs of our work.
Rhyme Time!
This week as a focus during our busy start activities we have been focusing on identifying rhyming words. We now know that rhyming words have the same or nearly the same sound at the end of the word, like cat, bat and mat…they all end in ‘at’. We have had lots of practise matching rhyming pictures and listening to lots of rhyming stories. We even have a special game to play on the smart board, here is the link to have a go at home if you like.
Here are some photographs of the different types of activities we have been working on this week to help us develop this skill.
We have enjoyed reading this book and searching for the rhyming words.
This week’s school value – Challenged
This week’s school value focus has been on the word ‘Challenged‘. We have discussed what this word means to us in Primary One and have made a pact with each other to keep challenging ourselves when we are working on a task. We decided to always ask ourselves the question ‘what I can do better?’ and ‘How can I improve my work’. We have been reminding each other and giving each other tips to challenge ourselves to always be looking for ways to improve.
Our Autumn focus continues…..
We have been reading lots of Autumn inspired stories during our literacy time and building up our Autumn vocabulary. One of the stories we explored was ‘The Very Helpful Hedgehog’ by Rosie Wellesley.
After this story we made our own salt dough hedgehogs. We were able to follow a recipe to make the salt dough using the required ingredients. We mixed salt, water and flour together and then kneaded the dough into the shape of a hedgehog. We were able to use lots of fantastic describing words, such as thick, lumpy and runny. Someone even said that the dough looked like porridge and cookie dough. We then added spikes using spaghetti to make the spines. Check out the end results below.
Subitising in Number Time
This week we have started to introduce number talks into our numeracy hour. We begin each number lesson with a number talk. This is a short session where we explore how to develop our number sense. This week we have been investigating using a five frame and discussing how we see the dots. Here is an example below.
As a class we explore what number we can see (3)and how we see it. Some children explained this as follows –
Kaleb – I counted one, two and three and I knew it was three.
Jake – I saw two and then another one so it was three.
Kellan – We are missing two dots from the frame so that is three.
As we become more confident we will be able to work with bigger amounts of numbers and move onto using a ten frame and even exploring dot patterns.
We are constantly learning that numbers can be represented in all manner of ways. We have been playing number match bingo this week, where we roll the dice and if we have the number on our bingo board we cover it up. Here is an example of the number board we use. We have become much faster and more confident when recognising which number is being represented.
We hope that you all have a lovely weekend and we will be sharing our learning highlights again next week on the blog.
