P3 enjoy music

We’ve been learning  about different instruments in music this week.  We were listening to Peter and the Wolf, and while we were listening we were trying to identify the different instruments.  We had the opportunity to handle a flute, a clarinet, a violin and a drum in class.  We made a lot of noise with the drum.  It was funny to feel the violin when it was making a note as it vibrated.

P3 try Judo and Art

JUDO

We have had a lovely time trying out Judo today.  First we took off our shoes and our sweatshirts.  We took off our watches.  Next we put on a judo jacket.  Some were blue and some were white.  Some were small and some were large.  It was fun trying to find one to fit.  Then we got a partner and we followed the instructor to learn a few moves.  At the beginning we were using bean bags, and we had to try and spin around so our partner couldn’t get the beanbag (Oscar).  My favourite one was the arm wrestles (Bailey), the turtle move (Anton). I liked the sandwich move where you were stuck on your partner’s chest (Kayleigh).

ART

We were learning about the work of Kandinsky  He was an abstract artist, and we looked at his pictures where he used warm and cold colours.  We used paint and tried mixing our own colours.  We made our own versions of Kandinsky’s concentric circle picture.  We had great fun, but we got very messy.

P3 – Sharing the Learning

We are now back at school after the Easter break,  for our last term in primary 3.  Although it was a short week, we have been very busy.

We had a very exciting afternoon on Thursday, when we had our Sharing the Learning afternoon.   In writing we wrote invitations to parents and friends inviting them to come to visit our class. We used ICT to make power point presentations, and we learned how to insert a picture onto a slide and add a sentence.  We planned our script to accompany our powerpoint presentation.  As a class, we chose which activities we wanted to share with our families.  At the end of our presentation, we performed our “Walk like an Ancient Egyptian” song.

Lots of people came to visit our class.  At times,  it was very noisy and very hot, but we enjoyed the afternoon – a big thank you to all who attended and made our afternoon such a success.

Egyptian Week in P3

This week we have been working on our Ancient Egyptians topic.  We have been writing hieroglyphs for our hand writing – it is great fun but a very slow way to write.

We have been working on our maths using the number system that the Ancient Egyptians used.  It is really tricky, we managed to write the date quite easily but adding up Ancient Egyptian numbers was really challenging.

We had a fabulous trip to the Museum of Scotland where we visited the newly opened Ancient Egypt Gallery.  We saw lots of lovely artifacts and exhibits.  Our favourites were the canopic jars (Emily ), the mummies ( Kyle), the hieroglyphic slabs (Emily C) and the bust of Nefertiti (Oscar).

“It was lots of fun” Lily   “It was amazing” Sophie  “We were all very tired after our trip” Emily  “We enjoyed a play in the play zone” Kara

We have been creating some lovely artwork in the style of Nefertiti.  We saw a bust of Nefertiti at  the museum, and we tried to create our own pictures in a similar style using a black and white photograph and wax crayons.

Ancient Egyptians

Primary 3 are working hard learning about the Ancient Egyptians.  This week, we have been learning about mummification, and we have been creating beautiful sarcophagus designs.

We have written letters to Mrs Wallace about a trip to the Museum in Edinburgh, and we are planning to visit the new Ancient Egyptian gallery there next week.  We have created a large pyramid in our class.  It has blocks on the outside, and hieroglyphics on the inside.

We have been learning to play a game from Ancient Egyptian times.  It is called Mehen,  and it is quite tricky but a lot of fun.

Maths Fun

We have been working hard in maths, and are enjoying using some of our new resources.

We have colour coded baskets of maths resources including dice, dominoes, cubes and counters.

We have been using our problem solving skills to make pyramids.  We tried using cubes, and we also had a challenge using some cardboard.  It was great fun – we managed to create some square based pyramids and a triangular based pyramid.

R E S P E C T

….Find out what it means to us!

This week we have been working hard on one of our school values “Respect”.  We have been working in small groups to make mini drama scenes for each of the letters in the word respect.

We presented the values assembly for the school, and we were very enthusiastic singing the R E S P E C T song.  We worked together to make up actions for the respect song.  At the end of the assembly, we taught all the classes our dance moves.

P3 Celebrate World Book Day with a Difference

Primary 3 have been busy writing dog stories.  We have lots of soft toy dogs in our class, and we love reading with them.  We were imagining what the class dogs might do once everyone had gone home, and we have written some lovely stories.  We have been learning to type up the stories on the computer, and this week, we have been taking photographs of the dogs and inserting the pictures into the stories.  We decided to make a book of short stories.  We had a class vote to decide the order of the stories.  We have been learning about alphabetical order, and we have put the stories into dog’s name order.

On Friday, there was a surprise parcel in the class……..

……our book has been finished, and we are able to launch it this week.  We are very excited about sharing our work.

P3 Ancient Egypt

We have had another very busy week.  We are learning about multiplication and division, and we are sorting items into groups to help us with our times tables.

We had a big surprise this week.  Inside the hamper were clues about our new topic……

…….some hieroglyphic writing, an ancient jar, a book on pyramids and a book from ancient times.  We were very excited to discover that our new topic for this term is Ancient Egypt.  We are going to be working in groups with children and teachers from P3/4 and P4, as well as our own class.  Watch this space for more exciting news about our topic.
