Primary One – Thursday 23rd April 2020
You are probably nearing the end of your learning packs but, don’t worry a new 2 week pack is nearly ready to be sent out. Try to finish as much as you can. Today’s tasks below.
Create your own shop in the house. It could be a toy shop, a cafe, a supermarket etc. Decide how much each item will cost and make labels displaying the price e.g. a tin of beans could be 5p (up to 20p if you are feeling confident) Ask people in your house to come to the shop and buy 1 or 2 things. Can you add up how much they will cost altogether?
Top Tip! it is always best to use real coins if you can.
Have a great day! More activities tomorrow.
Primary One- Wednesday 22nd April 2020
Morning everyone! Happy World Earth Day!
Earth day takes place on the 22nd of April every year. It is a day to remind people how to look after the earth. It also helps people to learn more about the environment. As part of our participation Fridays we have been looking at the important issue of recycling. Can the children remember the 3 “R”? Can they retell the story of the Messy Magpie? (Its a really good story and you can find it on twinkl) and the important message she realizes by the end? There will be a lot of media coverage it maybe a good idea to listen to Newsround at 11 o’clock. Below are a few Earth Day Activities for you to try.
Activity 1 – Art and Craft
Using recycled materials draw a large circle (perhaps use a cereal box), cut it out and using blue and green paint/colouring pencils try to colour the sea blue and countries in our world green (there are a number of images of the world on line that can support this ). Then draw and cut out some love hearts and on each one make a promise of things that you could do to save our planet. Attach the hearts to the world with string/wool and hang the mobile in your house to remind you of your promises to help save our planet.
Activity 2 – Minecraft Competition
Below is a link to a Minecraft challenge. The challenge involves building your own sculpture for Jupiter Artland. The winning design will join the permanent collection at Jupiter’s online universe plus other goodies.
Activity 3 – Phonics
I would like to move onto a new sounds from Inky’s Vowel House. The new sound is ai. The ai sound lives in the second window under ee. The old man who lives in this part of the house finds it difficult to hear and often says “ai”.
L.I. to understand that 2 letters can make one sound
S.C. I can blend this sound with others to read words
S.C. I can spell words with this sound
Can you practice sounding out and blending these words?
ai-m, r-ai-n, t-ai-l, m-ai-l, s-ai-l, p-ai-d, p-ai-n, p-ai-n-t, n-ai-l, w-ai-t, Can you think of anymore? As an extension, can you create an interesting sentence?
Activity 4 – Numeracy- 5/10 a daily
L.I. to count on and back
S.C. I can add to numbers together to find a total using different strategies
S.C. I can take away one number from another to find a total
It is great that you are continuing to practice you daily 5. So I thought I would extend the challenge a little and increase the number of questions.
5 + 3 = 7 + 3 =
6 + 2 = 9 + 2 =
4 – 3 = 8 – 2 =
6 – 3 = 9 – 3 =
9 – 5 = 10 – 3 =
Remember to use concrete materials and write your answers in your jotter.
Have a great day, stay safe. More posts on the blog tomorrow.

You can use your jotter to copy the worksheets and answers.
Activity 3 – Music
If we were at school we would be learning one of my favourite Spring songs Spring Chicken! The powerpoint and song is below. Singing this song always makes me smile and hope it does the same for you!
Have a great day everyone and I will be back on the blog tomorrow.
Primary One – Monday 20th April 2020
Good afternoon everyone, great to be in contact with you again. I hope you are well and had a fantastic Easter. You should now be starting work from your week 3 pack. As an additional task, I would like you to create a story map of your favourite day from the holidays. Below is an example of the Goldilocks story map we created with Mrs Stevenson.
Activity 1-
L.I. to create a story plan
S.C. I can draw pictures to show the events in my day
S.C. I can sequence my daily activities
As you can see it is a numbers of pictures rather than a written story. You could start by drawing a picture of you getting up in the morning, then eating breakfast followed by going on an Easter hunt in the house or garden etc. A little tip, use arrows to show the direction your day is taking. As an extension, you could use your story plan to help you write an account of your day. Remember you can use your jotter.
Activity 2- Addition and Subtraction to 10/20
Below is a link to a fun game which will help you with counting on and back. Have a go at both Find a Number and Count on and Back. You can use 1-10 or challenge yourself to use 1-20. Enjoy!

Primary One – Friday 3rd April 2020
Good morning everyone. Hope you are all well! It’s the last day of term and as it turns out it’s not quite the way we thought it would be, but it is still great to be able to communicate with you all through the blog. By now you will probably have completed week 2 activities, I hope you have enjoyed sharing them and they have been useful.
I am sure that you have heard or tried Joe Wicks workout, today is dress up workout day. Have a go, send some pictures to the school email would be great to see you working out in your favourite dress up costumes. http://deansprimary.westlothian.org.uk
Easter is almost here I have downloaded an outline of an egg. Can you copy it and decorate it (use jotters) can you create a repeating pattern? Can you use shape and colour? Again take some pictures and send them to the school email.
I have also copied an Easter addition worksheet for you to complete in your jotters.
Below is a link to help you to make Easter baskets. Enjoy!
I hope you all have a fantastic Easter, enjoy this time with your family and don’t eat too many eggs at once! I will post more activities after the Easter Holidays. Stay safe!
Primary One – Thursday 2nd April 2020
Good morning everyone! Hope you are all safe and well. Just 2 more days until the Easter holidays! Some extra activities for you to try.
Activity 1 – Phonics oo and ee sounds
I have copied 2 pages that can be completed in jotters. The idea is that you choose a consonant sound from the first square box bring it down to the number 1 dotted line then choose either oo or ee to bring down for the next sound, then choose the last sound from the end square box. Now blend the sounds together, say the word and draw a picture to match. Try to complete both sheets. You could extend your learning by creating you own boxes with different sounds. How many words can you make and read?
L.I. to understand that two letters can make 1 sound
S.C. I can blend oo and ee with other sounds to create and read words
Activity 2 – Maths – Money
As it is nearly Easter I have copied 2 worksheets for you to try. They are called How Much Do the Easter Eggs Cost?. There are 4 eggs with different amounts in each. I would suggest that if the children have banks or you have some spare change it would be helpful to use concrete materials to support understanding. Again use the jotter to record answers. To extend learning the children could draw their own Easter eggs putting different amounts in each and then adding to find a total.
L.I. to recognize and use a range of coins
S.C. I can identify coins to 10p
S.C. I can apply my addition skills to add coins up to value of 10p
Activity 3 – Easter Activities
Some fun things to do with your family over the holiday
- Have an egg an spoon race (make sure the egg is hard boiled!)
- Decorate an Easter egg tree (made from branches etc, that you may find on your daily exercise walk?)
- Make an Easter basket and leave it at someone’s door to cheer them up
- Easter egg treasure hunt in your own garden
- Easter egg rolling race in your own garden
- Easter egg decorating competition.
Remember we would love to see pictures so please send them to the schools email address. http://deasnsprimary.westlothian.org.uk
Have a great day. Stay safe!
