This Week in P3/2

Literacy

We were learning to improve our vocabulary during Word Boost. We were introduced to 6 boost words and their meaning. When we hear a boost word, we have to put our finger on our nose and explain the meaning of the word. We also played the miming game, this is where one person has to mime out the boost word and the class have identify what the boost word is.

We were also developing our skimming and scanning skills during our reading comprehension. This is where we have to identify the key words within the question and skim read the text to find the answer.

For writing this week, we started learning about narrative writing. We were introduced to the structure we have to use for this genre and we created a narrative piece in small groups. Afterwards, we peer assessed each groups work and identified the areas of success and areas that they could improve on.

We were using our echo reading skills to develop our expression and fluency skills. We were also developing our questioning skills. After reading our book, we had to think of a question to ask our friends about the text. Questioning skills help develop our understanding of the text.

For writing this week, we started our new genre of explanation. We were writing about how a plant grows. First, watched video about the germination process and had to use our note taking skills to help us with our writing piece. We collaborated in our groups to discuss the process of how a plant grows.

Maths

This week, we continued to learn about times tables. We were using textbooks and developed our skills of presenting our work neatly. We were also using problem solving skills to tackle multiplication word problems.

IDL

We started our new ‘World of Work’ topic. As a class, we discussed why adults have jobs and how we can develop skills to help us in the world of work. Additionally, we learned about different job sectors and the jobs within them.

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

We got our new reading books and we were using your clarifying skills to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words. We also introduced echo reading this week. Echo reading is used to help us read with fluency and expression.

“We have been using echo reading this week. My teacher reads a page first and then I would read it back”.

“This made reading easier as it broke up the tricky words”.

We have been practicing our tricky words this week. We love to play games with our spelling words like quiz a friend.

“I have to look, say, cover, write, and check each word.”

In writing, we finished our information report genre. We researched and discussed Spring and then used this information to support us when writing our report.

Maths

In maths, we were continuing to solve times tables equations. We had to identify an effective strategy to help us calculate the answer. We all enjoyed using our skills to play times table snakes and ladders and times table bingo.

“Using pop its help me calculate the answer.”

“I used my fingers and counted in twos.”

Health and Wellbeing

This week, we started football for P.E. We were working on our dribbling skills, passing skills and keeping control of the ball.

“We were dribbling in and out of the cones.”

“We can to pass the ball to out team members.”

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

For reading this week, we have been focusing on using key words and phrases to find key pieces of information. We were highlighting the information in the text before answering our questions in sentences.

We have been sounding out our new spelling words. We look, say cover, write and check each word 3 times. Then, we write the word with our eyes closed on our whiteboard as this help us to remember how to spell the words accurately.

In writing, we were using our imagination to help us write a narrative text. We were writing a story with the title ‘Up Up and Away’. We were developing our skills of using adjectives to describe the setting and characters.

Maths

This week in maths, we were focusing on our 5 and 10 times tables. We have been practicing them through maths games and we loved playing times table bingo as a class.

We have also been solving multiplication equations using effective strategies. Some pupils were using arrays to solve the equations and others were using their fingers and skip counting.

IDL

For our topic of toys, we have been looking at plastic pollution. Plastic pollution is a big problem that we face as a society! We were discussing how plastic is a useful material as it is strong and cheap to make. However, it does not decompose and it is not getting recycled properly. Many plastic is in landfill and the sea and this is bad for the animals and the environment.

We had a class discussion about how many toys today are make from plastic. We were shocked to hear that McDonalds is the world’s biggest manufacturer of toys. However, these toys are often made from plastic and are usually throw away toys. We made posters to inform people of the issues created by plastic toy pollution.
