In reading this week, we have been developing our summarising skills. We have to describe the story in a few sentences. We have to include the most important details.

Numeracy

In numeracy, we were learning to partition numbers. This is when we spilt a number up into small number bonds. This will support us with our mental calculations.
Additionally, we have been learning to round to the nearest 10. When we are rounding to the nearest 10, we must look at the ones. If the ones are 0-4 we round down and if the ones 5-9, we round up.

IDL

In writing this week, we wrote our assessment piece of recount writing. We wrote a recount of our morning routine at school. We have to use the correct structure and use our core writing targets.

Numeracy

In numeracy this week, we were looking at number sequences. We were given a number sequence that had some missing numbers. We had to use our problem skills to solve rule of the sequence and fill in the missing numbers. There were different strategies that we could use to help us. Some of us used our fingers and some of us used a 100 square to calculate the missing numbers.

IDL

This week, we were looking at plastic pollution and the environmental impacts of plastics. We completed a reading comprehension task about plastic pollution. We had to use our skim reading skills to help us answer the questions.

We were also learning about how recycling can be one of the possible solutions to help reduce plastic pollution. We had to think things we could do in school to help protect the environment. In school, we can put paper or cardboard in blue recycling bin. Items such as laminating sheets and paper towels cannot be recycled, therefore, we must put them in the black waste bin.

This Week in P3

Literacy

In writing this week, we continued to develop our recount writing skills. We created a small shop and as a class, we discussed the steps we carry out when in the shops. This helps us visualise our shopping routine when writing the recount piece. We were trying to ‘Bump Up’ our writing by adding adjectives to give the reader more information.

We were also practicing our tricky words this week. We were using our rainbow writing. This is where we have to say, cover, write and check each words.

Maths

In maths this week, we continued to develop our fractions knowledge. We were building on our knowledge from last week to look at converting fractions such as eighths and sixths into halves, thirds and quarters.

IDL

This week, we started our new topic Extreme Earth. We were learning about the layers of the Earth. We came up with a chant and dance to help us remember that the layers of the Earth are inner core, outer core, mantle and crust. We also learned about the key features of a volcano. To support this, we watched the live footage of the volcano eruption in La Palma.

This Week In P3

Literacy

During reading this week, we had to read a passage and highlight the adjectives describing the character. After we had identified the describing words, we had to use this information to draw a picture of the character.

We continued to practice our spelling words. We practice our spelling words daily using wooden letters, writing on whiteboards and playing games.

Maths

This week, we were developing our number sense and ordering numbers. We have been ordering numbers from lowest to highest and also highest to lowest.

We were also looking at fractions this week. We were learning that we use fractions in everyday life, such as when we are cutting a pizza. We also had to write the fractions for a whole, half and quarters.

IDL

In science this week, we were learning about materials that were thermal conductors. We learnt that metals are great thermal conductors and this is why pots are made from metals. The atoms in the pot get bigger as they get hotter and this is called thermal expansion.

The Week in P3

Literacy

In reading this week, we were using our skimming and scanning skills when answering questions about a passage. We had to pick out the key word in the question and then we would skim read for that word in the text.

In writing this week, we continued to develop our recount reading skills. We had to read our feedback from last week and try and up-level our writing. This week, we were writing a recount of our experiment about absorbance.

Maths and Numeracy

In numeracy this week, we were learning about less than, equal to and greater than. To help remember the correct symbols, we had to think of a crocodile and the crocodile always eats the largest number.

In maths, we were learning about 2d and 3d shapes. We also had a STEM shape challenge. Working with a partner, we hard to create shapes using cocktail sticks and Playdoh.

IDL

In science, we were learning about absorbance. When a material is absorbent, it soaks up liquid. We were given 4 materials and we had to put the same volume of water in each. Before the experiment, we had to write a hypothesis, predicting the material that would absorb the largest amount of water. Working in groups, we had to collaborate and record what was happening during our experiment.

This Week in P3

Literacy

In writing this week, we were beginning to learning about the recount genre. We looked at the structure and then we studied an example of a recount piece. Then, we collaborated in small groups to create a recount of our first day in primary 3.

During reading, we were focusing on our predicting skills. Before we read the book, we predicted what we thought might happen and then explained our predictions.

Numeracy

This week, we continue to develop our place value skills. We were looking at ones, tens and hundreds. We were using the Dienes materials to help us identify the ones, tens and hundreds.

In our place value house, we can only have one digit per column. The smallest number in the column is 0 and the largest number is 9.

IDL

In science this week, we continued to develop our scientific vocabulary. We were identifying the advantages and disadvantages of materials. We were given the same object in 3 different materials and we had to state the pros and cons of each.

This Week in P3

In Primary 3 we have had a fantastic start to the year! We have enjoyed seeing our friends and hearing about how we spent our summer holidays.

We were practicing our tricky words and playing with some of our literacy games. During our story, we made predictions at the beginning and different points throughout the story.

In numeracy, we had an introduction to our place value topic. We were learning about ones and tens. We were using dienes materials to represent the number provided to us by our partners and we had to peer-assess one another’s work.

In science we learning about materials. This week, we learning about the properties of materials. We were given different materials and discussed their properties as we identified there similarities and differences. When we were discussing the properties of the materials, we had to use the correct scientific vocabulary.

This Week P3/2

Literacy

This week in reading, we have been continuing to develop our reciprocal reading skills. During our class novel ‘Charlotte’s Web’, we were stopping at various points in the novel to made predictions. We had to provide evidence to support our predictions. We also creates questions about the chapter to ask to our friends.

This week in writing, we were continuing to develop our narrative writing skills. We had to read our feedback from last week and apply it to this week’s written piece. We then created a plan for our stories ensuring that our writing followed an appropriate structure.

Maths

In maths this week, we continued to learn about fractions. We were learning about thirds, sixths and eighths. We have been drawing shapes and colouring a given fraction. We linked our fractions to our world our work topic as we were working in a pizza parlour. The customer would write the fraction of pizza they would like to buy and the chef would need to cut the pizza into the correct fraction.
