This Week in Primary 5

We have had another busy week in Primary 5.

In Numeracy we have continued looking at Place Value. Some of us were looking at numbers that contained hundreds and thousands and some of us were looking at numbers that contained tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands.

When some of us were finished, we offered peer support to anyone who was finding it tricky. We played some good Place Value games online too!

In Literacy we have been practising our spelling words with some silly sentences and some partner work. We wrote our spelling words on our partner’s back and they had to guess which word it was! It is important we practise these at home too.

In Reading we have started looking at the Reciprocal Reading strategy of Summarising. We looked at pieces together and discussed some key questions relating to each piece of text. These questions helped us to get the main ideas to then create a summary.

In Writing we have continued working on our new genre of Persuasive Writing. We wrote pieces this week about the importance of fundraising. This was relevant to us at the moment as Poppies are on sale for Remembrance Day and it will soon be Children in Need. Here are some of our pieces:

We are looking forward to more new learning next week!

An Update from Primary 5

Primary 5 have been working hard on their tasks this week.

In Numeracy we have been looking at Place Value and what this means. We discussed that a number like: 1276 – would mean that the 1 would have the value of 1000 (thousands), the 2 would have the value of 200 (hundreds), the 7 would have the value of 70 (tens) and the 6 would have the value of 6 (ones). We also discussed the possibility of having numbers containing tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands and millions.

We played some good Place Value games online as well as a board game.

The board game:

In Literacy we have been practising our spelling words with some rainbow writing and some partner work. We also created some stories using our spelling words, you can see these below. It is important we practise these at home too.

In Reading we have started looking at the Reciprocal Reading strategy of Summarising  – this means:

‘Just to tell you the main parts of the story’ – Sophie C

‘If you have a long story, you shorten it up by saying the main parts of the story.’ – Summer

‘You just add the main facts.’ – Lewis

‘Summarise by saying the key facts.’ – Olivia

‘You need to mention who, what, where, when and why’ – Ariah

In Writing we have been looking at our new genre of Persuasive Writing. We wrote pieces this week about whether we thought fireworks should be made silent or not. Here are some of our pieces:

We look forward to another busy week next week!

This Week in Primary 5

Primary 5 have had a great week on the lead up to the October break!

In Literacy we have continued reading our group readers, enjoying discussions on these and talking about any words we are unsure of that we could clarify. We also continued working on our Clarifying grids from last week. We picked out some super words to clarify!

In Writing this week we had our final Recount piece. This was our assessment piece. We were given the choice to write about an event or a holiday/trip. Here are some of our finished pieces:

In Spelling we completed an interim assessment on the words we have been working on this term. On the whole we scored really well. Mrs Hillan encourages us to continue to practise as much as we can at home as it definitely helps!

In Numeracy this week we have been working on a pre-topic assessment on Division. Here are some of our thoughts:

Chloe – It is similar to your times tables and if you don’t know them it will be hard to do.

Caelan – When we start doing division is starts to get more challenging as you grow up, but you know more.

Sophie C – At first it’s hard but when you start to get used to it, it gets easier.

Iona – It was a bit of a challenge, but once we pushed ourselves it was a bit easier.

Summer – If you want to do division is times a number that’s in sum that will help give you the number at the start.

For IDL we have introduced our new topic of SPACE! We are very excited to get started on this. Here are some of the things that we listed that we would like to find out about:

-Why is Pluto a dwarf planet?
-Can you lie down in space?
-How big is the moon?
-How many stars are there?
-How many people have been in space?
-How many holes are in the moon?

-Why can you find water on the moon?
-Has there ever been a pet on the moon?
-Can you eat food whilst walking on the moon?

We hope everyone has a super October break and stays safe!

Update from Primary 5

We have had another busy week in Primary 5, with lots of new tasks and challenges.

In Numeracy we have been looking at Decimals and how these relate to Fractions. We also looked at how we record these on a number line. We then went on to look at Percentages and also made links to what we have done previously in Fractions and Decimals. Here are some examples of the questions we completed:

50% of 40 = 20

25% of 80 = 20

10% of 70 = 7

PUPIL THOUGHTS:

Lewis – Decimals look hard but when you do a couple, they get a bit easier.

Chloe – You need to know your times tables to do them.

Summer – You also need to know your division skills.

Matthew – Percentages look hard, but are actually easy.

Olivia – First when you take a look at percentages it may look hard, but all you have to do is divide – e.g 50% you divide by 2.

Ryley – After you’ve tried a couple of percentages questions they become easier.

In Literacy this week we have moved on to look at the skill of Clarifying in Reciprocal reading. This is where we use a variety of strategies to make the meaning of an unknown word clear.

Here are the strategies we might use:

-use clues from reading on in the text

-use clues from re-reading the text

-visualising what is happening

-using our own knowledge

-looking for smaller words inside bigger words

-using clues like illustrations, punctuation etc.

We used a text called The Raven Heir:

We discussed what it might be about using our previous skills in Prediction and then we picked words from the text to clarify using the strategies above.

Here are some of the words we picked out to clarify. We will finish these next week.

In spelling we practised our words using fancy lettering. We repeated this later in the week but tested a partner, who then had to write their word correctly in fancy lettering.

In PE we have continued with our basketball skills and have now incorporated these into mini games. Before starting we had to go over the basic rules of the game.

We are looking forward to another week of learning next week.

This week in Primary 5

We have been busy this week in Primary 5! This has been our Fractions, Decimals and Percentages focus week in Numeracy and Maths. We completed some work using Fractions. We looked at what a fraction is, how it looks and how we present it – 1/2/, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, 1/8 etc.

Pupil thoughts:

I think Fractions is a bit hard – Kayleigh

Fractions are very easy and they are fun to learn – Chloe

If you want to half something, you put a line through the middle and if you want to quarter something you put a line through the middle one way and then through the other way. – Lewis R

When you are showing fraction you put a number on the top and one on the bottom with a line in between – Lewis D

Let’s say I had 6 on the bottom and 2 on the top, if I had a shape with 6 parts, I would colour in 2 of them – Erin R

We can use fractions when eating pizza, chocolate and cake – Sophie G

We then went on to look at mixed numbers and fractions. This is where we have a number like 2 4/5 and we then convert it into an improper fraction.

We will look at Decimals and Percentages and how these also link with fractions next week. We will use youtube clips to help with our understanding. We will focus on how we can find simple decimal fractions and working out 50%, 25% and 10% of something.

In Writing this week we continued looking at Recount. Mrs Hillan had an example for us to look at – it was a recount about a trip to a museum. We then picked somewhere we visited and gave a recount of this.

PUPIL RECOUNT IDEAS:

Mine was about going to my Nana’s – Ryley

Mine was about when I went to Arran on holiday – Sophie C

I wrote about Alton Towers – Ariah

I done one on when I went to Erin R’s birthday party – Sophie G

I done one about when I went to Eliburn Park – Matthew

Mine was about going to Burntisland – Caelan

I did one about me going to the beach – Chloe

In Reading we began our focus on Prediction for our Reciprocal Reading Skills. We are very good at making predictions in P5 and we actually make these every day, not only in our reading lessons! This week we were given two images which we then discussed and made several predictions about. Here are the pictures and some of our predictions:

PREDICTIONS:

Caelan – I think the monster is going to crush the kitten because it has it’s foot up.

Olivia – I think it is a goblin because he is green.

Lewis D – The monster is going to wake up the kitten with his foot then follow it home so he can eat all the other kittens, because he looks like he is hungry.

Sophie C – I think he is going to step on the cat, pick it up and then eat it. I think this because he had one foot raised and he looked mad, and when I get mad I’m hungry!

Jessica – I think that the creature is going to keep the cat and take it home. I think this because it looked like the creature was going to grab the kitten.

PREDICTIONS:

Erin P – I think if the rabbit goes through the tunnel then it will go into a big field.

Ariah – I think the rabbit is going to go through the hole and see its house.

Chloe – I think if the rabbit goes through the tunnel then it is going to lead to a different world.

Ciaran – I thought that the source of light was fire.

Lewis D – I think through the tunnel there will be fire and evil people.

Caelan – I think if the rabbit goes through the tunnel, it will go to the stairs of heaven.

Next week is a short week as we are on holiday on Monday and Tuesday!

This Week in Primary 5

This week in Primary 5 we have been given our new home learning sheet for the month along with our first week’s spelling words. We have been practising these in class and should continue to do so at home.

We have now been given our group reading books. We have started reading these in class and have made predictions on these already, saying what we think the book might be about and why we think this.

We have continued our Recount writing genre and this week we wrote a recount of our birthdays. Mrs Hillan went through each stage with us, sharing information on her birthday recount, and this gave us ideas for our’s. Read some of these below :

In Numeracy we did a number talk on addition, initially looking at 2 digit numbers, then we were given a 4 digit number to try. We could see that no matter how large the number was, the process was just the same! We also got an opportunity to look at some online numeracy games this week.

For our Novel Study this week, we created images of all the main characters for our display. We used what we had read to help us decide what they would look like.

We also created some questions in groups for some of the main characters in the story. We then used these to do a ‘hot-seating’ activity, where one of us pretended to be a character from the book and the rest of us took turns asking our questions. The person in the role of the character had to use their knowledge of them from the story to answer the questions as they may do. We all got a turn of being a character and asking questions.

Here are some photos of us creating our questions:

We look forward to another week of learning next week!

Highlights from Primary 5

This week we have continued working hard in Primary 5. We have finished off assessments in  Reading and  Numeracy and Maths.

In Reading we have continued our Novel Study. We have discussed and noted down any favourite parts from the story so far. We found out that Zoe’s Dad worked in an ice cream factory and have created posters to advertise all the different flavours of ice cream.

We continued with our Recount writing genre this week too. This week we imagined we had been on a trip to the moon and retold the events of this. We went through an example with Mrs Hillan, and then created our own recounts.

For Art this week we created some self portraits. We looked at how we can draw all of the features on the face accurately. These are some of our drawings in progress:

For PE just now we are working on Basketball skills. We have been learning the chest pass, bounce pass, single hand dribbling and double hand dribbling. We have also began working on our shooting skills. Here are some photos of us in action:

This week in Primary 5!

This week we have continued with our fantastic learning in Primary 5! We have completed some other assessments in Spelling and Reading and have started some in Numeracy and Maths. These will continue next week.

In Reading we have started our Novel Study. Our book is Ratburger by David Walliams. We started off by making predictions of what we thought the book was going to be about based purely on the title. Here are some of our thoughts:

Erin R – It will be about a place where rats are cooked or the hamburger pates are made from rats.

Ariah – It’s going to be about a man who goes into a restaurant every day and order a burger and puts a rat on it and eats it.

Daniel – It is going to be about a rapper who loves burgers.

Ciaran – It is going to be about a cook who makes a burger with a rat inside.

Then Mrs Hillan read the blurb and asked us again. Here are some other predictions:

Caelan – It is going to be about a really hungry man who puts anything on a burger.

Holly – It will be about a man who wants to cook someone’s rat.

Lewis D – It will be about a man who looks for a rat in a restaurant to put in a burger.

Gracie – It will be about a man who cooks a rat and brings it to the wrapping station and makes the rat dance.

Ariah – It will be about a the girl feeding a rat burger to the bully.

We started a new writing genre this week too – Recount. This is where we have to retell and evaluate events and experiences. We went through an example with Mrs Hillan, and then created our own recounts of our first day back at school.

We look forward to seeing what next week brings!

Welcome Back from Primary 5!

Back To School Mickey Mouse GIF - Back To School Mickey Mouse Apple GIFs

Welcome back everyone!!! It has been so nice to see everyone back in school this week and hear everyone’s stories about their Summer!

This week we have spent quality time listening to each other share our news of our holidays as well as going over any news for the next few weeks and the year ahead. We had a COVID update and started to think about our Class Charter so that we can get this created and displayed next week.

We wrote and drew pictures for some of the highlights of our Summer and these will be added to a class display. We also created some cool name tags for our pegs in the cloakroom.

We created some handwashing posters to remind ourselves and each other about the importance of washing our hands regularly. We must also remember to sanitise regularly too.

This week we have completed our first spelling baseline test so that we become familiar with new spelling patterns and improve our spelling skills. We have also done a bit of recapping of our addition and subtraction skills to get our brains in gear again! We will focus on this for the next couple of weeks to make sure we are confident with this again.

We have been set a task by Mrs Stewart to think about which After School Clubs we would like to see available and which Leadership groups we would like to be part of. Mrs Hillan will gather our ideas next week.

Looking forward to another week of learning next week!

Our Final Post of Primary 4.

This is our last week of Primary 4 – we are sad to be leaving P4 behind, but we are excited about moving onto Primary 5 and discovering the new challenges it will bring!

We have enjoyed completing some Summer activities this week such as creating a Summer scene, making a list of things we would like to do over the holidays, and writing about the things we have liked about this year.

We have written a ‘message in a bottle’ for our P5 teacher to tell them a little bit about ourselves. It will be interesting for Mrs Hillan to see if any of our likes and dislikes have changed over the past year for those of us still in her class.

We rounded up our Egyptians topic by finishing off our jewellery and having a little sum up of all we have learned, here are some of our points:

Sophie C – ‘After people die, there’s a chance that they can still do the toilet!’

Gracie – ‘When they are mummified they put masks on their coffins so they know who they are.’

Shay – ‘They use a hook to take their brain out.’

Hadiyaah – ‘Scarabs are special to the Egyptians.’

Lewis -‘Egyptians believed that cats were protective.’

Emily – ‘If you were given trading something valuable for food then you would get a lot of food.’

Caelan – ‘The Egyptians believed that their brains were in their hearts.’

Ariah – ‘The eye symbol is called the ‘Eye of Horus’.’

Olivia – ‘They brought their cats to work with them.’

Derry – ‘The scarab beetle died at night and was reborn in the morning.’

Ryley – ‘The Egyptians would do the toilet as well as bathe in the River Nile.’

Maisy – ‘There were animals and bits of animals in the river and they still swam in it.’

Kayleigh – ‘They thought your thoughts came from your heart.’

Chloe – ‘Egyptians don’t have money so they trade for what they want.’

Summer – ‘They didn’t wear clothes until they were 5 years old.’

Holly – ‘Kids drank beer!’

We finished off our week with Mrs Hillan with a treat of watching the original movie of ‘The Witches’ after finishing our class novel.

Primary 4 and Mrs Hillan would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Summer holiday! Have a wonderful time!!
