Good Morning Primary 1/2

Good Morning Everybody!

I hope everybody is safe and well this morning and ready for another day of home learning with me.

RME

Hopefully everyone got a chance to watch the Easter Bible story yesterday and now has an understanding of why we celebrate Easter. In case you missed the youtube clip here is a PowerPoint also detailing the main points.

Easter story PPT

Have a go at drawing your favourite part of the Easter story and you could even add some labels to your pictures.

Writing

I thought that today we could have a go at writing a little Easter themed story. I have written the start and your job is to finish it off for me. I know how wonderfully imaginative you all are so can’t wait to hear what you come up with.

The Easter Surprise.

Suddenly there was a strange cracking sound. To everyone’s surprise the egg split open and out popped……..

Finish the story… What popped out of the egg? What did it look like? What did it say and do?

Share your ideas with an adult and have a go at writing the next part of the story together. Don’t forget to use your writing targets.

We are learning to write in sentences.

Successful learners always

  • Use a capital letter at the start of a sentence
  • Use a full stop at the end of a sentence
  • Use finger spaces to space out our words
  • Try to sound out words we don’t  know by listening to the sounds

Draw a picture to go with your work and check you have written the date and the title at the top of the page. Good luck and I can’t wait to hear all the fantastic ideas you come up with! You could get an adult to take a picture of your work and email into the school office. This is the school email address.

Art and Technology

It wouldn’t be Easter and the end of term without some Easter Arts and Crafts to complete. I know its really tricky to get craft supplies just now and in the Stevenson household we are running low too, so don’t worry if you can’t get any of the resources you can use what you have!

If we were in school today we would have been making some Easter cards. Here are some ideas for you to have a go with. If you don’t have the supplies you can always fold a piece of paper in half and decorate it with some colouring pencils with an Easter picture.

Maths

As a fun little maths challenge today. I have attached a 2D shape cutting skills activity. This is one you will need to get an adult to print for you unfortunately.

Easter chick 2D shape cutting activity

Mrs Anderson says hello and she wanted me to add these 2 little activities for you to complete at home.

Numeracy

Here is your Daily Five for today. Yesterday we focused on addition of doubles. Today let’s focus on subtraction of doubles. Do you notice anything interesting about your answers? Don’t forget to use your tools and talk about your answers to an adult.

5 – 5 =              3 – 3 =            1 – 1 =

2 – 2 =           4 – 4 =

That’s all for today boys and girls. Mrs Lockhart will be adding some activities for you all tomorrow on your last day of term. I wish you all a very ‘Hoppy Easter’ and hope you all stay safe and happy.

A little shout out to another extremely kind friend who decided to make Easter packs for all his friends and deliver them when he was out on his daily walk. This made my heart sing and once again brightened up my day yesterday. Take care everybody. I miss you all.

Happy April Fools Day Primary 1/2

Good Morning Everyone.

Happy April Fools Day – did anyone get caught out this morning?

Here is a little clip giving you some information about why April Fool’s is celebrated throughout the world.

Reading

I hope everyone managed to have a read of Kipper’s Diary yesterday and were able to complete the follow up activities. Here is the link again as we are going to be using the book for a follow up task today.

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/oxford-owl-ebook-collection

In your home learning pack you should have a copy of  Roll, Read and Find. Here is another link in case you have misplaced it.

roll read and find sheet

With the help of an adult, read through Kipper’s diary and select any words which you have found  a bit tricky, such as went, day, was, sunny, windy and hot. Write these in pencil into the boxes numbered 1-6 ( so you can rub out and use the sheet again)  then roll a dice ( or number bits of paper 1-6 if you don’t have a dice) and whatever number you get, read the word, then search through the book to find the word, you could even get an adult to challenge you to write them down without looking.

Phonics

We are not going to be introducing a new sound this week but focusing on consolidation of the oa and ai sounds from previous weeks.

Get an adult to challenge you to writing some words containing these sounds. Don’t forget to use the join we learned last week when writing the sound.

Have a go at sounding out and writing

l-oa -f       s-oa -p        t -oa -d       c -oa -t      b -oat -t     r-oa -d

w-ai-t         r-ai -l          m-ai-l       m-ai -d      p-ai -d       n – ai – l

Can you draw some detailed pictures to go with your words. Don’t forget to green for growth, tickle pink and write the date on your work.

Numeracy

Here are your daily Five for today. Remember to share with an adult how you have solved the calculation and what tool you have used.  Let’s have a focus on doubles today…

5 + 5 =                2 + 2 =             4 + 4 =            3 + 3 =        1 + 1 =

I found this fun youtube clip called Dancing Doubles to support you..

If you are finding the daily Five too easy and want a challenge, this is a super website which I have used with classes before.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

There are options for addition, subtraction and ordering numbers. Start at level one and see how you get on.

Maths

This week we have been focusing on 2D shape.

Here is a great online game which incorporates not only shape but repeating patterns too (something which we focused on way back in term 1).

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/shape-patterns

I would suggest starting at level one and working your way up to level 2 depending on how confident you feel.

Don’t forget you can visit Education City and play the game Bar -B shapes from yesterday’s tasks.

Health and Wellbeing

Yesterday I set you the challenge of designing a poster to display why and how we can keep ourselves safe from household products and medicine. Well done to those of you who completed the poster, I look forward to seeing them. Don’t forget you can email your efforts to our school email address.

wldeans-ps@westlothian.org.uk

Today I would like to ask the question, which are safe/unsafe for you to use. Can you come up with a list of household objects which are safe/unsafe. For example…

  Safe                                                                      Unsafe

tablet                                                                        bleach

teddy bear                                                              kettle

You can draw/write these into your purple jotters.

RME

With Easter fast approaching I thought it might be a good idea to focus a little bit of our learning around this Christian celebration.  What is Easter? What do we do differently during this holiday? Why do we celebrate Easter? Share your ideas with an adult.

Here is a link to the Easter story for you to watch.

Good luck with all of your home learning for today.

A little shout out to the kind friend in our class who sent in some writing for me yesterday, it made me smile so so much! A big thank you for brightening my day.

Oh and I found out yesterday that Amazon has made all their stories online free to stream. Audible Kids is fantastic, we started listening to Winnie the Pooh yesterday. Here is the link, there are so many books to choose from. Enjoy!

https://stories.audible.com/start-listen

One last thing! Mrs Anderson wanted me to remind you to keep going with her 30 day yoga and mindfulness challenge.  Here it is again in case you have forgotten.

Happy Learning,

Mrs Stevenson

Happy Tuesday Primary 1/2

Good Morning Everyone!

I hope you all had a great Monday and are ready for Tuesday’s tasks. Remember to keep working through the at home learning packs  (week 2) and checking in here for any extra activities.

Reading

For reading today I thought you could explore this website.

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-school/oxford-owl-ebook-collection

I have set up a class account for us  –

Username: deans12   password: mrsstevenson

There are lots of super ebooks for you to practise your superb reading skills with our favourite characters Biff, Chip and Kipper! I thought today we could all have a go at reading ‘Kipper’s Diary’ (level 1+) and complete play activity one and two as a follow up.

Remember to be good readers we always –

  • Follow the words with our fingers
  • Use our word attack skills to sound out tricky words – (look at the first letter, chunk the word into syllables/chin drops)
  • Use the pictures to give us clues

Seeing the book is all about the weather and how normally part of our daily routine in class is recording the weather,  why don’t we all have a go at being meteorologists? Look out of the window everyday and record what the weather is like in your purple jotter. Don’t forget the date and even challenge yourself to write a sentence, for example,

Today the weather is cloudy and I am going to go and play in the garden.

Numeracy

The Daily Five

Here are your daily five for today.  Pop your answers into your purple jotter.

Remember to look at the symbol and choose a tool to help you find the solution. You could even make your own number line to help you.

10 – 5 =             5 – 5 =            3 + 2 =

6 + 1 =              5  + 0 =

Maths

Yesterday I sent you all on a 2D shape hunt. I would love to see any pictures you made. Remember you can email photographs to the school email address

wldeans-ps@westlothian.org.uk

I know that Mrs Stewart is going to tweet any examples of excellent home learning! So get snapping and emailing anything you are proud of.

Today I would like you to have a go at naming 2D shapes and identifying how many sides they have. Here is a shape word mat to help you.

The first activity asks you to write the name of the shape and complete how many sides it has. Some of the shapes are what we call irregular (they look a bit different, but we can identify them by counting their sides) Have a go! Again you can print this page or simply copy into jotters.

2D name the shape

Finally just for fun I have added a colour by shape worksheet.

2D colour by shape

I have added another game to our class section on Education City. It is called Bar -B Shapes to help you recognise and name 2D shapes. You will find it under our home learning section. Good Luck!

Health and Well being

Yesterday we began to look at household products and how they should be stored and used in a way that can keep us safe. Today I would like you to think about the question –

How can we stay safe at home?

Talk to an adult and share your ideas together. You could even design a poster displaying your ideas on how to keep safe at home. For example, drawing a locked medicine cabinet or keeping household cleaning products in an out of reach cupboard.  I have attached a template for you to use below.

-being-safe-around-medicines-design-a-poster-activity-sheet-english

Here is brief  youtube clip about medicine safety as a little reminder.

I hope you all have a great day.

Don’t forget to do your daily workout with Joe Wicks, listen to a read aloud from the link yesterday and get some time outside in the fresh air.

Has anybody been counting the rainbows and teddy bears in the windows on their daily walks?

I would love to see any pictures of your windows if you have made a display for your local community.  Speak to you all tomorrow.

Online learning resources and websites

Good afternoon everybody.

I found a huge selection of online learning resources, games and interesting websites to further learning opportunities during this strange time. I have added the link below, they are arranged into curricular areas and should provide many hours of educational entertainment should you all wish to explore. Suitable for all ages and stages.

Good Morning Primary 1/2

Good Morning Everybody – I hope you all have had a restful and relaxing weekend and are ready for another week of some fun home learning tasks.

This week you should be moving onto week 2 of your home learning packs, but like last week I will be posting additional activities here for you to try.

We would normally have our Big Monday morning check in, instead why don’t you tell an adult about how you are feeling today and what did you enjoy doing over your weekend. If you have any older relatives or friends could you share this with them over the phone? Or perhaps you could draw a picture of one thing you did over the weekend and write a sentence to explain your picture. This could be added to your purple jotters. Don’t forget all the writing targets… Can you share them with an adult?

Here are some ideas for activities today.

Reading.

Choose one of the books from your pack. Is it Fiction or non-fiction. Can you tell an adult what the difference is? Once you have read your book, design an alternative front cover. Don’t forget to include the author, illustrator and the title of the book.

As an additional task, go on a book hunt around your house. Choose at least 10 books and sort them into fiction and non fiction. Can you explain to an adult why you have sorted each book into each category? Here is a little song for you to listen to, to help you remember the difference between fiction and non-fiction.

I am missing reading aloud to you all during our milk and story time.  I found this super website with a huge selection of some of our favourite read aloud books. If you copy the address below into the search bar you will be able to choose your favourite story and have it read aloud to you by an adult. Grab some milk or water and enjoy!

Numeracy/Maths

Don’t forget to get an adult to give you 5 daily calculations to solve using the tools we have been learning about in class. Remember don’t get tricked out by the symbol!

Here are my five for today.. complete them in your purple jotter..don’t forget to date your work!!

10 – 2 =               3 + 7 =                6 – 4  =

5 + 4 =                 6 – 0 =

One of the tasks in your home learning pack this week is all about shape. If you could complete the activity here is a little fun follow up task.

This time I am challenging you to go on a shape hunt around your house. What shapes can you find. Draw around objects, eg a DVD for a circle or a book for a rectangle etc. Cut them out and decorate them. Create your own shape picture or if you have a printer get an adult to print the sheet below for you to fill in. Add some colour to your pictures too.

2DShapeHunt

Health and Wellbeing

This term we are learning all about keeping ourselves healthy.  Today I would like us to focus on household products, including medicines and how they can be harmful to us if not stored and used in the proper way.

To get started there is a game on Education city called Baby Jack, this will help you get an idea about which types of foods and medicines can be helpful or harmful – have a go and see how many you can get right. I will add this game to our Home learning section on the website.

Take a look at these 2 set of pictures below…

Sort the pictures of household items/ products into the rooms where they would be found, either kitchen or bathroom; then each pair takes, for instance, the kitchen pictures and sorts those into items safe for them to use/not safe for them to use.
Can you share with an adult reasons why some items are safe/unsafe for you to use.

HWB1

HWB2

I hope everybody has a great day and remember to spend some time outside seeing the sunshine has made an appearance at last. Speak with you all tomorrow.

PS.Who joined in with Joe and his workout this morning? Here is the link in case you missed it!

Good Morning Primary 1/2

Good morning everybody.

I hope you are all well this morning and ready for another day of learning!

After hearing so much about Joe Wicks and his workouts, I thought I would have a go this morning. It was great and really got my heart pumping and even worked up a sweat!

Here is the link, why don’t you persuade whoever is in your household to join in with you and get moving. It really is a great way to start the day and get a little bit of exercise.  I certainly will be making this part of my morning routine.

Another idea for something to add into your daily routine is completing our class date chart each morning to keep track of the date, days and the weather. Here is the link for this activity.

https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/dateChart/index.html

Mrs Anderson would normally be taking the class this morning but instead she has sent us all a 30 day Mindfulness Challenge. There are lots of ideas for you to work through at home to help you feel calm and relaxed. Start today……

Mrs Anderson’s yoga website has lots of fun activities and one I would recommend is the sleepy bedtime yoga. Check it out before bedtime.

www.sonshineyoga.co.uk/blog

I hope everybody had a go at some of the new sound tasks yesterday. Today  we should have a practise at writing the sound. I know how amazing you all were at joining oo, ee and ai, this is the same idea. You keep your pencil on the paper until you finish. You can use your purple jotters to have a go…. don’t forget to green for growth and tickle pink when you have finished…you could even draw your own traffic light too!

I bet you could all easily share the success criteria for our handwriting lessons with an adult… have a go!

  • sharp pencil
  • Letters on the line
  • letters the right size
  • Keep your pencil on the paper until you have finished
  • Take your time

How many did you remember?

Here is a visual to help you below, again you can print this or just display it on your screen, ai is included too so have a go at that one also as a little recap.

oa and ai letter formation

Once you have had a practise see how many oa words you can write in your jotters, not forgetting the join. You could even draw a detailed picture to go with each of your words. For those of you who are feeling confident, write a silly sentence with as many oa words as you can fit in. Remember the sillier the better.  This is my silly sentence, you can use this if you can’t think of your own.

‘The toad went to the shop to get a loaf and some soap.’

Numeracy

One of your tasks in the pack was focusing on learning the number bonds for 10.

Could you get an adult to test you as part of your daily 5 task?

Here is a song to help you remember..

Here is a little follow up task..

Making 10 .

There is a ten frame at the top to help you.  You could either print the sheet off or simply display it on your screen to fill in the answers in your purple jotters. Good luck!

Have a great day everybody. Mrs Lockhart will be adding to our blog tomorrow but I will pop on and say hello at some point.

Remember you can log onto Educationcity (passwords/usernames in jotters) to have a go at some of the activities..

‘Goat Load’  –  oa sound

‘Addition Impossible’ and  ‘Hustle and Bustle’ for number bonds to 10.

Good Morning Primary 1/2

Good Morning Everybody!

Have a go at teaching an adult our welcome song, don’t forget the actions too.

I hope everybody is working through the week 1 activities and consolidating all of our learning and having some fun too!

Yesterday I made a cake with my little boy and if you have the ingredients available I would thoroughly recommend doing some home baking. It’s a great way to practise all the measuring you have been working on with Mrs Lockhart and of course you get a tasty treat at the end of it all!!

This is the recipe I used…

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/classic-victoria-sandwich-recipe

This is the finished cake! It’s a bit wonky but we tried our best.  Have a go yourself and take some pictures of the finished masterpiece, you could even write out some of your own instructions on how you made it!

Lets have a go a learning a new sound…..

The sound for this week is ‘oa’ . If you remember, this sound can be found in Inky’s vowel house. It is a black tunnel sound and our lips stay round when making this sound.  See below for the story which goes with this sound. A good little reminder to help you with the sound is ‘when two vowels go walking the first one does the talking’.. you say the first sounds alphabet name and the second sound is not pronounced.

2 VH story for parents

Below is the Jolly Jingle for this sound…just for fun!

Once you have got to grips with making and saying this sound, here are a few activities you can have a go at to help you consolidate. If you have a printer, you can print them out or simply just display them on your screen and use your jotters to complete the task.

oa roll and read mat

Write the oa word worksheet

I hope everybody has a good day.

Good Morning Primary 1/2

Good Morning Everybody!

I hope everybody is safe, well and enjoying some precious time at home with your families. You should hopefully have got your work pack at home and can start working your way through some of the week 1 activities. Remember you can also use your purple jotters for any writing, drawing or numeracy that you would like to practise and your education city passwords/usernames are stuck into the inside cover.

I will start putting some extra little activities up and will be saying hello most days so be sure to keep checking our blog. Here’s one to get you started.

We have recently been learning all about time… can you practise reciting the days of the week in order? You could have a go at writing them out, cutting them up and putting back in order using your jotters for this. Here is a link to the song we use in class to help you.

If you fancy a little challenge, have a go in French!

Have a good day everybody and stay safe!

Mrs Stevenson

Primary 2/1 Sharing the Learning

We have had yet another busy week in Primary 2/1 with one of our main highlights being our sharing the learning afternoon on Tuesday.

Prior to Tuesday we had a surprise in the story corner on Monday…. 3 bowls of porridge and 3 little bears! We think the dragon was telling us that he wanted us to read the fairytale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, which we did! We then tried our hand at making our own story map, this is where you retell the story but instead of using words you draw pictures. They were really successful and helped us improve our retelling and sequencing skills at the same time.

Elkie really liked this activity because it helped her to improve her drawings.

On Tuesday afternoon we welcomed parents and carers into our classroom to share some of the fantastic learning which has been taking place. We had a ‘Goldilocks’ theme for the afternoon with a main focus on literacy based activities. These are some of the activities we had in place.

Word building using the magnetic boards and CVC cards, a Goldilocks story sequencing, Goldilocks free writing with story  mats, Story telling with our puppet theatre and props, word splat and the chance to share a fairytale with your adult using our  word pointers to find some tricky words.

Euan enjoyed using the puppets to put on a show for his mum and gran, he even acted out the story of Jack and the Beanstalk too.

Nathan enjoyed making a bear face with his mum and sharing with her.

Andrew loved adding all the details onto his bears face.

Ashley enjoyed making the porridge bowls using patterns with her mum and gran.

It was a successful afternoon and we loved showing everyone around our classroom and having the opportunity to talk about our learning and even help create our Goldilocks display. A huge big thank you to everyone who attended, we very much value your support and encouragement and thoroughly enjoyed having you all in our class.

Here is our finished Goldilocks display…. we think it is super and love the fact that our parents and carers helped us create it.

On Wednesday we had a go at writing letters to the three bears from Goldilocks to say sorry for all of the chaos she caused in their cottage.  We are getting very good at reflecting on our learning at the moment. We are using green for growth (for something we could improve on) and tickled pink (for something we did well). This is helping us to identify our own next steps in our learning.

In numeracy, we are still focusing on Subtraction and applying the tools to help us answer calculations. This week saw us focus on word problems, where Mrs Stevenson would read out a problem and our task was to write down the calculation to find the solution.  We are getting very confident at this and have enjoyed leading our learning by making up our own word problems for our friends to solve.

In PE we are still working on developing our football skills. This week we played body ball where we took our ball for a walk by passing it carefully from one foot to the other and when a body part was called our we had to place that part on the ball, it was tricky getting into some of the positions especially for ‘back’ ball! We have been improving our ability to dribble and pass the ball with control and co-ordination, so this week we put this to the test with a simple game. We got into groups of 3 and made a triangle shape and passed the ball to our partners. We had to pay attention and make sure we could stop the ball with our feet only..no hands allowed and then pass the ball to our other partner with control and accuracy.

An exciting week in Fairyland for Primary 1/2

It has been an exciting week in Primary 1/2 as we continue to build Fairyland in our classroom and have had exciting deliveries from our friendly dragon.

On Monday we had an unexpected delivery after lunch. A bag of compost, some seeds and a selection of plant pots!! We knew straight away that we needed to plant the seeds to grow our own mini beanstalks in the classroom. We learned all about how to care for our seeds to nurture them into proper beanstalks. We learned that all plants need water, sunlight, soil and the right temperature to grow. We have been very diligent when watering our plants every day and have been filling in a special bean diary to observe and record any growth.

Jordon was happy  to add the castles at the top of our beanstalks.

Nathaniel felt excited to plant his very own beanstalk.

The dragon also delivered a little pot of beans with all of our sounds written on them. We think he wants to help us get better at spelling, we have been having lots of fun spelling fairyland words with the beans.

Belle was practising her common words with the beans.

Euan had a go at writing speedy Gonzalez because he was watching it at home.

We were so excited to come into class and see that Jack’s beanstalk had appeared in our home corner. We worked so hard on creating different leaves and are very proud of how fantastic and realistic it looks. We think the dragon will be very happy with it and Elkie thinks it looks good.

On Tuesday we had yet another exciting delivery, Castle booklets and a trail of green glitter EVERYWHERE! He’s one messy dragon!! We couldn’t wait to get started writing in them. Mrs Stevenson even let us use the fancy pens.

On Wednesday we continued to practise our writing skills with a special focus on ‘listening carefully to the sounds in each word to help us spell independently. We thought about what magical things we would like to happen to us if we got our hands on some magic beans.

Georgia thought she would get a mansion for her family.

Ashley wanted her magic to make everyone in our school happy.

Erica’s magic beans would turn into an aeroplane to take her to the candy shop!

We decorated castles and wrote our magical ideas onto a special bean. Mrs Stevenson put them on display in the classroom and once again we are so proud of our learning.

It really has been a week of exciting deliveries, on Thursday yet more magic beans appeared. This time they were colourful ones, this got us talking about our favourite flavours of jelly beans! We decided to conduct a survey of our favourite flavours and then display the information on a class bar graph. It was really interesting to see all of our choices on the wall and we were able to answer questions like, what was the most and least popular flavour. Then we had a go at making our own bar graphs! This dragon really is helping us learn so much.

On Thursday we also had the added excitement of World Book Day. We thoroughly enjoyed wearing our comfy pyjamas, bringing our favourite soft toy and of course sharing our most favourite stories throughout the day. We enjoyed our library time with P5/6 and sharing our most favourite stories.

Archie brought in Goodnight Tractor because he likes the pages.

Robyn brought in The Stinky Sprouts and the Station Mouse because she likes them and they are very good.

We are very much looking forward to our Sharing the Learning event next Tuesday   (10th March) 2pm to 3pm and hope you can all make it.
