Happy Thursday Primary 1/2 7.5.20

Good Morning Everyone!

Good morning boys and girls, I hope you are all ready for Thursday’s home learning tasks. Don’t forget to keep working through the learning packs, there will be a new one ready for you soon.  Let’s jump right in with Thursday’s activities.

Reading

Visit  https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ to access our book for this week – ‘Top Dog’

Username deans12

Password mrsstevenson

Re- read the book with the help of an adult.

Remember all those things that a good reader does.

  • Follows the words with their finger
  • Uses the pictures for clues
  • Sounds out any tricky words

Yesterday I gave you some before reading questions, let’s try some after  reading questions today? Share your thoughts and ideas on these with an adult.

-Which dog did you like the best and why?

-How do you think Floppy was feeling throughout the story? Are there any picture clues to help you?

-How do you think Floppy felt at the end of the story and why? How can you tell?

-Biff, Chip and Kipper did a nice thing for Floppy to make him feel better, have you ever done anything to make someone feel better?

Choose an activity to complete from your home learning pack guided reading grid.  I have attached a copy below.

Guided Reading homelearning grid

As a fun little game to finish off our reading today – I found this online to help you practise reading CVC words. Have a go, you can either write the words down or shout them out at your computer.

Phonics

Yesterday we had an introduction to the sound ‘ng’.

Today we are going to have a go a writing this sound.

I would encourage you to have a go at joining the two letters together when you write them, there are a few practise sheets inside your home learning packs to guide you with the correct formation. Don’t forget to be successful when writing this join you need to  –

  • Have a sharp pencil
  • Rest your letters on the line, apart from g which has a tail!
  • Take your time and don’t lift your pencil until you have finished the join.

Another way to use ‘ng‘ is to add it to the end of a word with an ‘i‘ to make it ‘ing’

Can you have a go at listening carefully to these words

pack -ing         pick -ing     lock -ing

lick -ing            kick -ing    suck -ing

Have a go at writing these and drawing a picture to go with each one. Below is a little activity to help you practise this skill.

adding ing activity

I have added a game called ‘Sing a Song’ to our Home learning section of the Education city class area. Remember your passwords are glued to the inside cover of your purple jotters.

Numeracy and Maths

Daily 10

For today’s daily ten, I though we could continue with last weeks topic of ‘ten more’. This time I’m going to make it a little bit trickier.. Here goes, so if the number was 45, ten more would be 55… If you have access to a 100 square that would really help, alternatively here is one below. Ask an adult to help you with a practise run first.

Can you figure out the strategy to find ten more on the 100 square? (It’s easy just find the number and look below it, you can even count on ten to check!) Which number changes and which number stays the same? Share your ideas with an adult.

  1.  25            2.   19          3.   56           4.  67        5.   33           6.  81   7.  10       8. 73            9. 23           10. 22

Money

How is everyone getting on with the money box challenge? Remember to send your pictures into the school office as  I would really love to see them.

wldeans-ps@westlothian.org.uk

Today I thought we could get some practise using real money. Hopefully the adults in your house will agree to help with this little challenge as it will benefit them too.

When we grow up we have to work hard to earn money for the things we need and want to buy for our families. I would like you to have a little go at seeing how much work goes into earning yourself some money. With an adult decide on a list of jobs which you can do to help out around the house. For Example, washing the dishes, making your bed, reading a story to a younger sibling… next agree with an adult how much you will get ‘paid’ to complete these activities, it can be as little or as much as your adult agrees to. I have included a chore chart template below, but it might be just as easy to make your own.

Chore Chart

Remember to keep working through the money worksheets in your Home learning packs.

I have also added another challenge on Sum Dog website this time focusing on 2D shape words. Have a go, well done to all of you who have logged on and given it a go, there were some pretty impressive scores, keep it up!

Art/Topic

Below is a link for a guided drawing of a butterfly. There are lots of butterflies about at the moment especially if you are out walking in the woods. They are one of my favourite insects and it is great opportunity to practise our drawing skills and of course we need to use careful listening too. Remember to colour in your butterfly. Have FUN!

This made me think about one of my most favourite stories to read to my little boy, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Grab a glass of milk or water and lets pretend it’s story time in class.

Have a great day Boys and Girls, Mrs Lockhart will be sharing some activities for you to complete tomorrow. Have an amazing weekend, hopefully the sun will shine for us. Before I go, I just wanted to add that Miss Swanson wanted me to share with you that she is missing you all so so much, she says hello and is happy and healthy at home with her family. She cannot wait to see you all very very soon!

Mrs Stevenson

Good Morning P1/2 6.5.20

Happy Wednesday!

Welcome back boys and girls, I hope everyone had a lovely long weekend and you are feeling refreshed and ready for Wednesday’s home learning tasks. Don’t forget you can work your way through the home learning packs too and use the blog for any additional tasks you would like to complete.

Miss Stanway sent us teachers a little clip to share with you all. I know how many of you had wobbly teeth before school closed so I thought it would be fun to share ‘The Tooth fairy in Lockdown’, it made me giggle, I hope it does the same for you.

Reading

It’s a short week this week for learning but let’s focus on another new book from the oxford owls ebook selection.

Visit

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page

Log in using  username : deans12

Password: mrsstevenson

Access the book  – ‘Top Dog’

Have a go at some before reading questions with an adult-

  1. Can you make a prediction about what is going to happen in the story?
  2. What do you think Top Dog means?
  3. Who do you think the main characters will be in the story?
  4. Where do you think the story takes place?

Now have a go at reading the story with an adult. Remember all the things a good reader does to be successful… can you share them with your adult.

  • Point to each word
  • Use the pictures for clues
  • If we are unsure of a word sound it out
  • Look for words we know

Once you have read the book have a go at both of the activities at the top of the page. They focus on matching the sentence to the picture and listening for the ‘o’ sound and sorting some words into two groups. Good Luck!

Phonics

Last week we focused on the new sound ‘w’. Here is a clue for this weeks’ new sound.. can you guess what it is..

That’s right it’s ‘ng’ – it’s made up of 2 letters which make one sound coming from the back of your mouth.

In your pack you should see this sheet

What words can you think of which contain this sound? Here is a clip to help you.

Now, why not have a go at sounding out and writing some ng words and drawing some pictures to go with your words.

k – i –  ng              s – i – ng           s – o – ng            p – o – ng

b – a – ng              f – a – ng          l – o – ng            l – u – ng -s

Finally I would like you to have a go at writing a silly sentence with as many ‘ng’ words as possible. Don’t forget all the things a proper sentence needs.

  • Full stop at the end
  • Capital letter at the start
  • Finger spaces between the words
  • All the letters resting on the line.

Numeracy and Maths

Money

I hope you liked last weeks’ coin toss game and it helped you begin to get to grips with all the different coins, their values and maybe even making some totals by adding their values. Let’s continue with the theme of money and jump onto Facebook and catch up with Natwest Monday Sense Monday (even though it’s Wednesday!) Monday’s (4th May) lesson was all about saving money, something which I should probably watch too!! You will need an adult with a Facebook account to help you access this lesson.

Keeping with the theme of saving money I  thought I would set you all a little challenge to design your own money box using recycled materials. There are loads of ideas out there especially on Pinterest. Here are a few that I liked, they may just give you some inspiration.

I would love to see some of your money boxes, so if possible have an adult take a picture and email it into the school office.

wldeans-ps@westlothian.org.uk

I really do look forward to receiving pictures of your fantastic work at home, it makes my day!

Health and Well being

Last week we looked at crossing the road safely and thought about the key messages of STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. Today we are going to expand on them a bit further.

The 6 steps of the green Cross Code.

With the help of an adult explore the website

Green cross code

Can you list the 6 key steps and explain them to an adult.

Children and Educators

Visit the early section of the road safety Scotland and navigate to ‘green cross code pics‘ game to match the key words to the pictures. Feel free to explore the rest of the website, there are some great games to play to help you learn more about keeping safe on the road.

Have a great rest of the day and I hope you have enjoyed today’s learning tasks. I shall be back tomorrow with more!

Mrs Stevenson

Happy Thursday Primary 1/2 30.4.20

Happy Thursday Everybody!

Good morning Everyone! It’s Thursday and nearly the start of a holiday weekend, don’t forget that Monday and Tuesday are holidays for you all.  Here are some additional home learning ideas for you all today, remember you can use the Home learning packs too!

Reading

Access this weeks’ book (mix, mix, mix)and  re-read with an adult.

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page

Username dean12

Password mrsstevenson

Choose an activity from your guided reading grid (found in home learning pack 2) to use with the the Oxford Owls ebook  ‘Mix, Mix, Mix’, which we have been focusing on this week.

Are there any words which you are finding tricky? Why not play the ‘roll, read and find’ game with an adult. There is a copy of the game in pack 1 but I will attach a copy below just in case.

roll read and find sheet

Phonics/Art and Design

So this week we have been exploring the letter w, with word hunts, handwriting practise and spelling activities. Today I would like us to do something a little more creative. Firstly, think about the letter w and all the things which start with that letter. How many can you think of? Can you make a list of them all?

Choose one to word to create a picture of or even a model of (if you are feeling ambitious!) Here are some ideas below for inspiration.

I would love to see any pictures you make so please, if you can email them into the school office, they really make my day!

wldeans-ps@westlothian.org.uk

I have added another game to our Home learning section of educationcity, it’s called ‘Wishing Well’.. you have to identify all the words beginning with w, easy peasy! Good luck.

Numeracy and Maths

I thought I would pop this youtube clip up for you to practise counting forwards and backwards to 100. Remember it’s Mrs Swanson’s favourite!!

Daily 10.

For today’s daily 10 I thought we could say ten more. For example if the question was 30, ten more is 40. Have a go, we have done lots of counting in tens in class so with a bit of practise writing the tens number we should get the hang of it.

1. 20                   2. 70               3. 10          4. 0              5. 60              6. 30                   7. 80               8. 40          9. 50           10. 90

Money

Today I thought I might share a fun game to play at home to help you learn a little more about money. Hopefully some of you have set up your own little shop to play in and of course there are  a number of worksheets in the home learning pack too.

For this game you will need:

  • A pile of loose coins of different values
  • A hoop/box or something to throw the coins into

This game is called Coin Toss and there are lots of learning opportunities to teach you all about money and coins in particular.

  • Sit back and throw coins into the hoop, as you throw them in shout out the name of the coin ‘ in goes 5p’ etc..
  • You can sort all the coins that made it into the hoop – by value/colour shape etc
  • You can talk about the size and colour of the coins and what makes them different
  • You could work with an adult to add up all the coins that made it into the hoop
  • Once you have calculated the total you could chat about what you could afford to buy with that amount

You could even go one step further and talk about things we need like food, water clothes versus things we want like sweeties and toys and how we need money to buy all of these things.

Yoga Time

During this time at home it’s important we take time to relax and do the things we enjoy doing. I know that any time we have used ‘cosmic yoga’ in the classroom we have all thoroughly enjoyed it. I have left a link below…namaste!

I hope you all have a lovely holiday weekend and I will be back here on Wednesday to share more learning ideas. Mrs Lockhart will be posting here for you tomorrow. Enjoy the well earned break.

Mrs Stevenson

Good Morning Primary 1/2 29.4.20

Good Morning Boys and Girls!

Happy Wednesday everyone, I hope you are ready for another day of home learning fun!

Let’s jump right in with some……

Reading/writing

Have another go at reading ‘Mix, Mix, Mix’ on the Oxford Owls ebooks page. I want you to have a think today about what you would put in your potion to mix, mix, mix! Share this with an adult and you could even make it! I have attached below a template for writing out your very own magic potion. Use page 1 if you have a printer or you can make up your own in your purple jotters.

Magic Potion template

If you are having a go at this activity remember to use those ordering words that we used for writing instructions previously.

Success criteria

I can first, next and last to order my ideas.

I can use a capital letter, full stop and finger spaces.

I can sound out words I am unsure of.

Phonics/handwriting

This week we have been working on learning all about the ‘w’ sound. (a big thanks to those who sent me some ‘w’ pictures yesterday – great work!)

Today I would like you to have a go at practising writing the letter. In your packs is a picture of 3 witches. The idea is to follow the pattern of the 3 witches hats to make the shape of the letter. There are a few worksheets within the pack to help you practise. In case you haven’t got your pack yet I have attached a practise sheet below.

w handwriting sheet

Don’t forget to tinkle pink and green for growth your work, use a sharp pencil and ensure your letters sit on the line.

This is a great website to explore if you are having some difficulty remember the correct formation of each letter.

https://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/literacy/

Numeracy and Maths

I thought we could have a go at subitising again today. Get your shouty voices (or pencils) ready to say how many dots are in the ten frame, remember you only have 3 seconds and the aim is to recognise how many without counting!

Daily 10.

Instead of me giving you your daily 10 today, visit this website…

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Choose level one, addition, numbers up to 10.

Look at the example below. The starting number is 3, so how many more do you add on to make 5?

Using a number line is an easy way to find the solution, put your finger on 3 and count on until you reach 5, how many jumps did you make with your finger? Or you could use counters (or anything around your house) start with 3 then make 5, how many did you have to add? Have a go, there are 10 questions, I suggest putting the timer on manual until you have got the hang of it. Then you can challenge yourself.

Money

How did everyone get on with making their own shops yesterday. I’d love to see some pictures if you have them?

Today why not practise making totals in your shop? Invite someone to visit your shop and you can add up what they spend.

Below is a link to a great game to help you add up coins.

Start by choosing ‘one coin’  and begin to practise using 1p’s to add up totals.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/toy-shop-money

Health and Wellbeing

Did you manage to figure out the 3 key messages from the road safety clip yesterday. STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. Well done if you got them right.

Why not design a poster displaying those key messages. Here are some pictures for inspiration.

Good luck with all of your learning tasks for today. I look forward to seeing all of your super work.  I will be back tomorrow with some more ideas for  home learning. Enjoy the rest of your day and if you are out for a walk don’t forget to stop, look and listen!

Happy Tuesday!

Good morning boys and girls, I hope everybody is ready for a terrific Tuesday.

Reading

Choose one of the activities from the guided reading grid supplied in your home learning pack. Remember to access the book of the week you can do so by visiting the website below or you can apply any of the tasks to a book of your choice from home.

Our focus book for this week is ‘Mix, Mix, Mix’. Re- read the book with the help of an adult.

Can you retell the story in your own words to an adult? You could even draw a story map of the order of the story to help you sequence what happens in the story. Below is an example of a story map for Little Red Riding Hood. This is a great visual way to help you recall the order of events in a story and a fun activity if you like drawing.

If you don’t have access to the reading grid, I have attached a copy below.

Guided Reading homelearning grid

Phonics

The new sound focus this week is ‘w’ which is a red sound (made using our lips) and it is stretchy like our snake. Yesterday I sent you on a word hunt for the sound and asked you to make the letter shape using any materials you found around your home. Today lets have a go at using the sound to make some words. Use your purple jotters. Have an adult sound out the letters and can you listen and slide them together to make a word.

w – e – b              w – ee – d          w – i – n – d             w- i – n

w – e – t               w – e – n – t        w- a – g                w – a – g – o – n

Then have a go at writing the word on your own and draw a picture to go with the word.  Remember to listen carefully to each of the sounds in the word and make sure you form each letter carefully and rest it on the line.

Here is our favourite friend Geraldine again to remind us all about the letter ‘w’.

Numeracy and Maths

Daily 9!!

Here are 9 questions to help you use all the strategies we have been working on in numeracy this year so far.

Today – Can you fill in the missing number to make ten?

2 + ____ =10                5 + ______=10              0 + _____=10

7 + _____=10               1 + _______=10          10 + ______=10

3 + _____=10               6 +________=10            9 + _______=10

Follow the link below to play a game online to help you brush up on your number bonds for 10.

https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Ten-Frame/

Maths –  Money

I hope some of you managed to catch the money lesson from Natwest yesterday over on Facebook live.

One of my little boys favourite game is to play shops. To help you get used to using different amounts of money why not set up your own shop role play area at home or in your garden.

You could decide what your shop is going to sell and collect lots of items and think about how much you would like to sell them for (pretend of course!) You can make price tags for your items and then invite members of your family to come shopping. You could even design signs for your shop.

Here are some images to give you some ideas.

Have an adult help you with writing out the prices. Don’t forget to use £ and p!

I would love to see some pictures of your shops if you decide to give it a go. Get an adult to take a picture and email it to our school office.

Road safety.

Do you know the green cross code?

It is very important that we know how to keep safe when crossing the road. Below is a very short clip outlining a few key messages for you to learn to help you stay safe when crossing the road with an adult.

Once you have watched the clip can you share with an adult 3 of the most important actions you can take when crossing the road.

Good luck with all of your learning tasks for today. I hope you find then fun and interesting. I will be back tomorrow with some more ideas for your learning. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Happy Monday Primary 1/2 27.4.20

Happy Monday Everybody!

Good Morning everybody, I hope you all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed some of the fantastic weather that we experienced in Scotland. Today new packs are being issued and will be ready to collect from the school front office from 10 am until 3 pm. If anyone is running low on stationary there will also be an opportunity to grab some essentials to keep you going with your learning and creating.

To get you started for the day, why not join in with Joe Wicks for 30 minutes of movement. Here is the link for you to follow. He will be live from 9.00 to 9.30am.

https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1/videos

Not forgetting Mrs Anderson’s 30 day yoga  and mindfulness challenge. How are you all doing? Don’t forget to visit her blog and website for new yoga poses to practise.

https://www.sonshineyoga.co.uk/blog

I recently discovered that our most favourite musicians, the Fischy Music team are holding weekly Monday morning assemblies. Here is the link to week 6, you could have a listen and see what songs you recognise or maybe even learn a few new ones!

Reading

This week lets focus on another book from the Oxford Owls ebooks collection.

Here is the website and log in details for our class.

Find the story, ‘Mix Mix Mix’

Read the story with the help of an adult. Can you answer the following questions..

Why do you think Rob rubs his tum?

Can you name some of the things Rob puts in his pan?

Would you like to taste his mixture and why?

Phonics

Our new sound to focus on this week is ‘w’

These are some of our learning targets for this sound that we will be working on for the rest of the week.

Success Criteria

I can say the sound to match the letter shape.

I know that w is a red, stretchy, lip sound.

I can blend this sound with other sounds to say a word I recognise.

I can write this letter to spell words with the sound.

How many words beginning with w can you think of? Go on a search around your house for inspiration.

Here is the jolly jingle just for fun.

https://youtu.be/PlDPegyV6XI

Can you make the letter? In class we would use play doh or loose parts. What materials can you find in your house the make the shape of the letter? Remember you can take pictures and email them to me using the school email address.

wldeans-ps@westlothian.org.uk\

Numeracy and Maths

Daily 10

Let’s challenge ourselves with 10 questions this week instead of 5. I will include a mixture of calculations which we have been working on since the start of the year.

4 + 4 =         6 – 6 =        5 + 6=       3 – 2 =      5 – 0 =

5 + 5 =         10 – 3 =      3 – 1 =       6 + 6 =      10 – 2 =

Good luck! Remember to talk about the strategies or tools which you used to help you solve the calculation.

Money

Our new maths focus for the start of this term is money. Included in your pack are lots of worksheets which will help you get to grips with coin values, ordering money, adding money and a few other fun activities.

As a starter for this topic Natwest are holding a MoneySense Monday lesson on Facebook live. You will have to ask an adult to help you find the page. This goes live from 10.00 to 10.30am and the focus is on notes and coins.

If you want to explore their website there are a number of fun interactive games for you to play.

https://natwest.mymoneysense.com/home/

Hopefully by now, you all have access to your sumdog passwords and user names, I have set a skills practise game called ‘Money 1’ in our class section for you to challenge yourself with.

I have also set a very simple game on EducationCity called Money Box Sorting which will help you recognise and identify different coins by looking at their colour. There is a also a fun colouring activity in your pack which will also help you work on this skill. Below is a link in case you haven’t got your pack yet.

coin detective

Topic

Our brand new topic for this term will be centred around ‘The Woodland’.

As a starter activity for this afternoon, have a think about what you know already about the woodland or forest. Think about trees, plants and animals. What would you like to learn? I would love to hear your suggestions.. why not have an adult take a picture of your ideas and email it into the school email address. Your work could include questions, statements, pictures… be as creative as you like!

Good luck with all your learning activities for today. I will be back tomorrow with more tasks for you.

Mrs Stevenson

23.4.20 Primary 1/2

Good Morning Everybody!

Happy Thursday everyone, I hope you are all well and ready for another sunny day.

Reading

For our last task featuring the story ‘The Big Carrot’ I would like you to create a sentence for the ending of the story seeing the last page is only a picture.

Use our class log in details to access the Oxford Owls ebooks

Username  – deans12

Password  – mrsstevenson

Re- read the story and think about what the last sentence in the book might be. You could even make the very last page by drawing the picture and writing the sentence beneath. You might even like to add on some speech bubbles and think about what the characters might say or think.

Phonics

Yesterday we had a focus on the ee and oo sounds from previous terms. For today’s phonics revision, let’s look at b and d. These are two tricky sounds which can catch a few of us out quite easily. Here’s a fun clip to help us remember what they look like.

One way to help us remember which way round each letter goes is to make a thumbs up in each hand and put them together. Imagine it is a bed with bedposts, sound out the word bed  b-e-d.

I have attached an activity for you all to try.

b and d confusion colouring

Now have a go at thinking of some b and d words. Can you write them out with the correct initial sound and making sure it is the right way round? Here are some to have a go with if you can’t think of any.

b – a – t           b- u – n           b – a- p               b – e – t

d – o – g         d – i – d             d- i – p                d – e – n

Numeracy

Subitising ten frames.

Below is an activity to help you with your subitising skills.  You only have 3 seconds per flash card so be ready, you can either shout them out at the computer or write them down, making sure you get the numbers round the correct way.

(Subitising is the ability to instantly recognise the number of objects in a small group without having to count them out.)

Have a go at completing this ten frame worksheet.

puppy ten frame activity

Ten frames are easy to make, if you have some chalk you could draw some outside and even join two ten frames together to practise numbers up to 20 or if you like a challenge beyond 20!

Daily 5 – Near Doubles.

Remember the rule and see if you can solve the calculation without any tools. If you can that’s brilliant, but it’s ok to have a little help too!

4 + 5 =                       5 + 6 =                  3 + 4 =

6 + 7 =                        2 + 3 =

Transient Spring Art

My challenge for you today in art is as follows.

Go into your gardens/ or on your daily exercise have a look for some natural materials, such as different leaves, twigs, interesting stones etc. Bring them home and lay them out to create a picture. If you are lacking materials you can always use different objects you find around the home which you think might be interesting.  You can be as creative as you like, the great thing about this is you don’t need to glue the materials down. If you wish you can take a picture and send it to the school email address. Here are a few to give you some inspiration.

Good luck with all your learning activities for today, but remember it is just as important to relax and have time for play. Mrs Lockhart will be posting some more activities for you tomorrow and I will be back here on Monday. Have a great weekend and stay safe everyone.

22.4.20 Primary 1/2

Good Morning Everybody!

I hope you all managed to enjoy some lovely Scottish sunshine yesterday. Here are some of today’s additional home learning tasks.

Reading/Science

This week, we have been reading The Big Carrot on Oxford Owls ebooks. Did you manage to find out the book which was similar to this one….. The Enormous Turnip! Today I would like you to have a go at ‘un-jumbling’ a sentence from the story.  Normally we do this task with the jumbled words cut up and we arrange them in the correct order. You could get an adult to write out the words on a piece of paper and have you stick them in the right order to make the sentence make sense. Re – read the book on the website and have a look at my jumbled up sentence below. Think about where the capital letters and full stops go and that should give you a good start.

tug carrot . and Tom the Ifra big

Remember to write the sentence out in your best handwriting and you can add a detailed picture to illustrate the sentence.

Got any carrots in your fridge? Did you know that you can use the tops of your carrots to plant and turn into a pretty carrot greens? I heard that some of our bean stalks are growing at a pretty crazy rate so I thought maybe since we were so successful with growing them that we could try something a little different.

How to grow a carrot top

Remember our bean Stalk diaries?  Why not keep a carrot stalk diary and record everyday how much your carrot grows, you could draw a picture, measure the stalk with a ruler and write down anything interesting that you notice.  I am definitely going to try this with my little boy. I wonder who can grow the tallest carrot? But first have a think about all the different things a plant needs to survive. Can you share what you already know with an adult? Here is a little song to remind you.

carrot diary

I have attached a very simple template for you to use if you have a printer, otherwise you could make up your own in your jotters.

Phonics

Yesterday we revisited ‘ck’, so today let’s have a look at two different sounds from last term. Can you remember the story of ee and oo from Inky’s Vowel House? Share the story with an adult if you can remember. If not below is a little reminder for you.

2 VH story for parents

‘ee’ and ‘oo’

Here are 2 clips to help you recall the ee and oo sounds.

What objects can you find around your house which contain these sounds? Find as many as you can and draw pictures of them writing out the word below your picture in your purple jotters.

I have attached a little challenge sheet for you to have a go.

ee oo code breaker

You can either display it on your screen or if you have access to a printer print it off to complete with the support of an adult. You have to figure out the code to make to the word to help you read and complete the sentences at the bottom.

I’ve added two new games to our homework section in Educationcity for you to practise.

‘Meet the Sheep’  and ‘The Big Cook Book’. Good luck and have fun.

Numeracy and Maths

Our daily 5 for today with a focus on using near doubles to help us find the solution to the calculation.

5 + 6 =                4 + 5 =             6 + 7 =          10 + 11 =       2 + 3 =

I have attached a game below for you to play with an adult. It requires a dice and two counters. This will help you to get faster at recalling your doubles and using your knowledge of doubles to help solve near doubles calculations.

doubles and near doubles board game

I mentioned above about measuring the growth of your carrots. I know that Mrs Lockhart has been teaching you all about measuring on Friday, so here’s a little challenge for you all.  Go on  a hunt around your house, how many measuring instruments can you find and what do they measure?

Can you find something which measures…

Time, water, length… what else can you think of?

As usual here is a little song to give you some inspiration.

Good luck with all of your home learning tasks today. I hope you all have fun.

Good Morning Everybody.

I hope everyone had a great first day back with home learning yesterday and managed to complete some of the assigned tasks. Here are some additional tasks for today should you wish to complete them.

The book I would like us to focus on this week is ‘The Big Carrot’

Read the book with an adult and have a go at activities 1 and 2 focusing on labelling the pictures and sequencing the story into the correct picture order.

Does this story seem familiar? Can you think of another story which is very similar to this one? I can… I will reveal it tomorrow, let’s see if you can guess correctly.

Phonics

I would like us to spend this week revising some of the sounds we have already covered in class and then next week I will introduce one new sound a week for us to focus on.

Today let’s look at ‘ck’

Watch this short clip and learn along with Geraldine the Giraffe!

Hopefully Geraldine will have helped you to remember some of the things we learned in class about this sound.

‘ck’ is a short, quiet sound which comes from the back of our throats (so it is a yellow sound – we need the flashlight to shine into the back of our throats to see where the sound comes from)

k and c also make the same sound as ‘ck’. The tricky part is knowing which one to use. Here is a short clip from Nessy spelling to help remind you..

Now it’s time to put our learning into action.

Can you go on a ‘ck’ hunt around your house. What objects can you find which have a ck in them? Once you have found all of your objects have a go a spelling the word and drawing a picture to go with it. You can use your purple jotters to do this task.

If you can’t find any objects have a go at blending together these sounds to make some ‘ck’ words. Have an adult read the sounds out to you, you can write them down and read them back to your adult.

l – o – ck                       d – u – ck                 n – e – ck                p – a – ck

s – o – ck                       r – o – ck                  l – i – ck                 l – u – ck

Finally for our last phonics task ask an adult to read out this silly sentence.

The lock on the clock was stuck.

Listen very carefully and write it into your jotter. You can get your adult to repeat it as many times as needed or even chunk it into little sections. Don’t forget all those things that a good writer does –

  • Capital letters
  • Full stops
  • Finger spaces
  • Letters on the line
  • listen to the sounds in each word to help you spell

How about having a go at writing your own silly sentence, how many ‘ck’ words can you squeeze in?

Log into Education city – I have added a new game called ‘Pack a Rucksack’ into the Home Learning section of our class to help us learn about the ck sound.

Numeracy and Maths

Last term we had a focus on doubles, ie 2 + 2 = 4     3 + 3 =6 etc. This week I would like us to have a go at using near doubles to have solve addition calculations.

So for our daily 5 today let’s try

2 + 3 =   ( we know that 2+2 =4 so 2+3 is just one more..easy)

4 + 5 =               5 + 6 =               3 + 4 =       1 + 2 =

Can you solve the calculation in your head without using any tools?

Today I would like us to focus on improving our counting skills. Have an adult give you a starting number. You can start to count from that number until the adult says stop! Additionally can you write out the numbers that you counted, don’t forget to make sure the number face the correct way! You can make it as easy or as challenging as you feel confident with. Once you feel confident counting forwards, try the same thing backwards!

Science/Art and Design

Yesterday I sent you all off on a Spring Walk to look for signs of Spring and to talk about what you notice in the natural environment. One of the things I have been noticing lately is the amount of different insects that have inhabited my garden. One insect in particular is the bumble bee! This has led myself and Noah to find out a little bit about bees and all of their very important jobs.

What can you find out about bees? Ask an adult to help you find out some facts about bees and design your own bee fact file.  You could include the answers to questions such as

Where do bees live?

What jobs do different bees do?

What do bees eat?

What are the different types of bees?

You could even practise drawing a bee. Here is a step by step guide to help you. Then colour in your bee (using real life colours if you have them).

If you are feeling really ambitious and confident you could choose from one of the activities below and have a go at some bee crafting.

Good luck with all of the activities for today.

As  promised here is our non-blue chick, we actually managed to scrape together some yellow paint. Noah was very surprised to be painting with a fork and not a brush! He insisted it was a duck and not a chick though.. What do you think?

I’d love to see any pictures you have made, send them to the school email address if you can.

Good luck with all of your activities for today. Remember to get outside and enjoy some of the sunshine.

Welcome Back Primary 1/2

Welcome back to term 4 of our school year. I hope you all had a lovely Easter holiday and didn’t eat too many chocolate eggs from the Easter Bunny, like I did! oops!! I’d better get logged onto Joe wicks everyday at 9am!

I hope everybody had a go at Mrs Stewart’s Easter STEM challenge this morning, I can’t wait to see all of your creations, you can email any pictures you have into the school email address.

You should now be onto week 3 of your home learning packs this week but as usual I will be posting additional activities on here on a daily basis.

Science/ Talking and Listening

With the appearance of the sunshine at long last, we have well and truly entered into the season of Spring. Spring officially starts on March 1st and runs until April 31st, although it’s been so cold lately that it’s only now that it’s beginning to feel like Spring to me. Today, on your daily exercise, or if you’ve already been out to stretch your legs go into your garden or open the window, I would like you to think about Spring and what happens during this season of the year.

Here are some key questions to discuss with an adult whilst on your ‘Spring Walk’.

What changes do you notice from the previous season (Winter)?

What do you notice about the trees, grass, flowers, fields…etc?

What sounds can you hear as you walk?

Look up! what can you see in the sky?

Look down! What can you see on the ground?

How does this season make you feel?

What can you smell in the air?

What is your favourite thing about Spring?

What foods do you like to eat during Spring?

What type of clothes do you wear?

What different activities do you do during this season and how are they different to other seasons like winter?

Once you have been on your walk, take a look at this short clip from the BBC outlining some of the changes in behaviour of plants, animals and the natural environment during the season of spring.

Music/Art and Design

Here is a link to one of my most favourite ‘Fischy Music’ songs. Primary 2’s you might remember this one from last year. Have a listen… can you join in with the words and even come up with some actions.

https://youtu.be/TKEwyLCKLwI

Can you make your own spring chick? A really easy but effective technique is using a fork and some yellow paint. I might even try this today with my little boy, although I think it might have to be a blue chicken as we’re all out of yellow paint, if you can use real life colours that would be great but don’t worry if you are low on resources like me! I will post a picture tomorrow to show you how we get on!

Good luck with all the tasks for today. I will be back tomorrow with some more activities for you all. Enjoy the sunshine.
