P4 Digital Day

Today P4 have been working on all things digital as part of DYW / Digital Learning.  They were very competitive learning keyboard skills.  They had to do a lot of problem solving and debugging to get their Lego creations to move correctly.  Everyone enjoyed creating a short stop frame animation.

Everyone had a great time.  “It didn’t feel like we were at school we were having so much fun”.  Well done everyone for working so well together and trying your very best.  You managed to upload lots of your work and your animations to your class team page.

P6 Weekly Update – Maths Champions!!

Numeracy

This week we worked hard practising all of our maths and numeracy skills in a Sumdog Competition against classes in schools across West Lothian. We were able to score individually and as a whole class.

Jaxson – At one point I was in 2nd place!

On the first day of the competition we were in first place and received a certificate in recognition of all our hard work. It is a PDF document and if you click here : sumdog certificate hopefully you can see it.

Eventually when the competition finished we came fourth and Mrs Stewart gave the class ten minutes extra play as a reward. (Extra coffee for Miss Stanway!)Some of us had even been on Sumdog at home in order to help the whole class.

We alo worked on the concept of chance and probability which is the likelihood of something happening. These are some of the words we used:

Alexis : impossible  Cameron : even chance

We came up with fun examples:

Hope – It is impossible that I can fly (without equipment).

Lily E – In a set of 10 cards with the numbers 1-10 it is impossible that a 12 will be picked.

Jaxson – It is an even chance when flipping a coin that it will land on heads.

We also used more mathematical examples using numbers such as 1 in 6 and 1 in 8.

Loop Games

In our loop game this week we had to add decimals. You have to go around the room and find clues and work with your partner to complete the puzzle!

There are raffle tickets to be won for first, second and third place but we get help too if we need it!

Some of us won prizes for our work on addition this term.

Emily – I was surprised how well I did!

Alexis – I was proud of my addition score!

Literacy

Writing – We produced some great persuasive pieces about why we should save the planet.

We had our last online lesson with Mrs Cochrane and practised our summarising skills.

In group reading we consolidated our prediction skills.

Topic

We finished our WW2 timeline. Here is Callum and Emily organising their group’s dates.

This is just a part of the completed timeline!

Cameron – I enjoyed doing the WW2 timeline.

Outdoor Learning

We practised our teamwork skills and built dens!

Robbie had injured his thumb so he took the photos!

P.E. – Rugby

Piotr – I enjoyed playing rugby and improved my passing and catching skills.

Jaxson – I Was proud because I could spin the ball when throwing it.

Hope – I could spin the ball.

This Week in P3

Literacy

In writing, we had to persuade the reader that it is important to protect the Earth. We watched a video and this helped us plan our arguments. When writing our final piece, we used our plan to help us with the correct structure. We had to add in bossy words to persuade the reader that they had to make some small lifestyle changes to help protect our planet.

In reading, we continued to develop our skills of reading with fluency and expression. In our reading groups, we had to listen to adults read the page and then we had to echo it back and add in the expression.

Maths

This week, we were using our place value skills to help us with addition. We were learning about the column addition, where we add the ones first and then the tens. We have to be careful when crossing over the digits.

Additionally, we were continuing to develop our skills when identifying different angles. This week, we were introduced to reflex angles. We were doing some angle yoga and we had to make the angle with our bodies. Then, we would give the name of an angle and we had to use a ruler to draw this given angle.

IDL

In Extreme Earth, we were learning about global warming. Global warming is happening at a faster rate due to human lifestyle choices. Burning fossil fuels creates greenhouse gasses and these gasses burn holes in the ozone layer. The ozone layer is an invisible layer that protects Earth from the sun.

P4/3 Create Flying Santas and More Digital Learning

This week we have had a revision of simple fractions.
We had fun using games – both hand’s on and online.

We were learning about St Andrew on St Andrew’s day.  We designed our own tartans online.  We even managed to save our designs on Word, and then upload our documents onto our class team.

We have also been practising our keyboard skills. As we become more familiar with the keys, we are getting faster at logging into different websites and apps.

We have been learning to write programs to run on the computer using block coding. We had great fun coding Santa to fly across the screen.

You can see some videos of our flying Santas, and more of our digital learning on our Twitter page @MrsBuntinICT

I enjoyed rounding and estimation-  LM

I loved doing everything but I liked making a winter art- SLW

I liked finding the things (objects) using the coordinates- KH

For reading, we continued learning to summarise a story.  We also used a range of reading skills to understand what we read.

For writing,  we persuaded our reader regarding the importance of looking after the world.

Primary 2 W/C 29/11/21

Topic

Our ‘Under the Sea’ topic is ending, so this week the children had to make boats from a range of materials. Next week we will test them in water to see if they float or sink!

Advent

We have started our advent in class. Each child will have a turn to unwrap a book and that will be our story for the day. Yesterday, in ‘Careful, Santa!’, Santa lost all the gifts and his little mouse helper! Thankfully, he found them and was still on time to deliver the presents. A few of us were a bit worried he would not make it!

We also have Santa’s beard to count down the number of sleeps until Christmas. (This is something the children started).

Novel

Our class novel is ‘The Christmasaurus’ which we have just started. It is a fun story and a little bit silly! We will have some fun activities linked to our novel when we have read a little bit more.

Deans Decision Makers

Our Deans Decision Makers have been very busy planning lots of different activities for us throughout December, so ask your child what we have done in class each day as part of our whole school Christmas activities. On the 1st December, we had to think of things that make us happy and put them in our ‘happy box’.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Weekly Update From Primary One

The Holiday Aisle® Christmas Wreath With Red Bow And LED Lights, Christmas Weaths For Front Door With Welcome Sign, Xmas Wreath For Holiday Christmas Party Decorations | Wayfair

Welcome to this weeks blog. In our class it’s beginning to look alot like Christmas. The children have decorated the class christmas tree. It looks beautiful!

They are all very excited and this month there are alot of Christmas actvities going on! Along with Primary 2 and 3 we have been practising for our annual Nativity, A Miracle in Town. It is really unfortunate that we cannot invite parents and carers into the school but the whole performance will be filmed and sent out for you to enjoy.

Writing

This week the children were trying to persude the reader that we should look after our playground. They came up with lots of reasons, the main one being that we need to be safe. Safe is one of our school values that we talk about daily. Some fantastic examples below-

Health and Wellbeing – PE

This week the children have been challenging themselves whilst developing their balancing, jumping and landing skills.

It was great to see them challenging themselves further to do a forward roll when they landed.

Numeracy

In numeracy, we are continuing to explore addition and this week the children really enjoyed playing ladybird bingo. They had to mentally add 2 numbers together and match it to a number on their board.

We also had a green apple red apple challenge. The children are definitely developing a range of strategies for partitioing and combining numbers!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with more updates from P1.

This week’s update from Primary 5

This week in Primary 5 we have been working hard!

In Numeracy we have been busy taking part in the Sumdog competition. We have been excited to see where we are in the leader board, and we have been trying our best to get better and better!! Here is what the children had to say about it:

Ariah – It was really fun and I got on the leader board in Junk Pile.

Ciaran – It was fun sharing the laptop with my friends. I like getting on the leader board!!

Erin R – I like playing Powerboat and right now I am top of the leader board in that game!

Caelan – I was playing Cannonball and I got second on the leader board out of the full school!

Holly – It was fun to see where we were on the leader board.

Lewis R – It was fun playing with my friends.

Sophie C – I liked playing Cannonball and I got third on the leader board!

Olivia – I enjoyed playing Sumdog and as I was playing, it turned out I was in fourth place.

Here we are trying to get super scores on the competition:

In Writing this week we have completed our Persuasive writing assessment. We had the topic of ‘Why Should We Look After the World?’. This brought about some good discussion on climate change, global warming, recycling (which linked to last week’s topic) and the extinction of animal species. Here we are showing off our work or busy at work:

In Spelling this week we did a task where we wrote out our words, but left a letter missing. Someone from our group had to fill in the missing letter. We could extend this next time by missing out more than one letter!

In Reading we have been enjoying our group readers and also our reading for enjoyment texts. We have tried to continue Stop, Drop and Read when we can, since we enjoyed it so much. We have also completed a comprehension task, which used our skills in answering questions, but also linked to our topic as it was about Planet Earth. Here are some facts we learned from this:

Lewis D – The Earth takes 24 hours to do a full spin on its axis.

Matthew – It takes the Earth 17 milliseconds to increase speed.

Caelan – The Sun is as far away from Earth as 150,000km!

Erin R – The lowest point on Earth is Challenger Deep.

In topic this week we completed a STEM task called Fizzy Moon. We needed to use paint, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Here is what we had to do:

1: Fill up a small spray bottle with vinegar and set aside.

2: In a few separate cups, for every 1/2 tablespoon of paint, mix with a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda.

3: Draw a circle on a piece of black card.

4: Use the paint brushes to paint the Moon with shades of blue (the paint needed to be thick). Let the Moon dry and draw a few stars around it with a white crayon or marker.

5: Once the moon painting is completely dry, use the spray bottle to squirt vinegar onto it and watch it fizz.

This was great fun to do, but we weren’t so happy about our classroom stinking of vinegar!! Here are some photos of our STEM task:

Also in topic we have begun researching what we have learned from Space Explorations. We will have some facts to share on this next week hopefully!
