Update from Primary 2

We have had a fun filled week in Primary 2! From our Talent Show auditions to the Spaghetti Challenge!

STEM Challenge

The children were given the task, from Mrs Stewart, to create the tallest tower they could using only spaghetti and marshmallows! The children had to work as a team to see who would win! We measured each tower and the children ranked them from smallest to tallest!

Christmas!

We got to watch the Panto this week and enjoyed singing and dancing with Aladdin!

We have been playing different Christmas games and the top two are Musical Bumps and Musical Statues.

We have made some lovely Christmas Cards, which the children will bring home next week! We also enjoyed a full day of games and wearing our Christmas pjs!

Last full week of school! P4 Class

This week I loved/ enjoyed…

SC- doing Christmas quiz against Mrs. Durano.

CM- we got to wear our jammies.

LJ- we got to play party games like paper dance.

SW- in pantomime, Aladdin kept sneaking up at his mum.

SA- we did Deans Got Talent and we got through to the Finals!!!!

AS- I’m happy cause I won the star award this week.

P6/5 17th December

Monday 13th

Maths: we went back to look at measure, comparing centimetres and meters, and using these skills on classroom objects.

Personal projects: we started researching these by reading about them on the internet, books and making notes. SD, SU, AS, EY, MaD, CB, ShP, SS, KH, EC, SJR, JH and AD are all very excited about these.

STEM: for today’s challenge the class went outside to find maths in nature. We were able to identify symmetry in leaves, tessellation in tree bark and Fibonacci sequences, and spirals, in the pollen of a daisy, a pine cone and a snail’s shell.

Tuesday 14^th

Maths: continue work on measure, measuring each other’s heights accurately, ensuring the meter rules were the right way round. One group continued work on converting meters to centimetres while another group worked on fractions. KM and SU exceeded in the conversion of decimals. SJR did exceptionally well with her fractions.

Personal Projects: we continued our background reading and research and worked on our note taking. EY excelled in this activity today.

STEM: our project for today was “Dancing Salt”. We used sound vibrations to make it dance. The louder the sound the more it danced.

Wednesday 15^th

Maths: continuing work on measure, including estimating and decimals. MM and SU were very accurate in their estimations.

Literacy: we have been reviewing the spelling we have done so far this year.

History: the whole class are really into history, so we made a timeline of all the historical events that we could think of and discussed these. From these we identified what topics the class had already done and the next one they want to do: Tudors.

Silent disco: GREAT FUN!!!!

Thursday 16^th

Maths: continuing work on measure and decimals, the class found the work that we have done so far very supportive and were able to complete today’s activity much more easily. SD completed the activity especially quickly. One group continued their work on fractions, looking at equivalent fractions

Literacy/History: lead by the class’s new found interest in history they were provided with sets history reference books that split history into nine different periods. They loved reading these and sharing the facts they learned with each other. They also re-enforced their learning from Wednesday of a history timeline by putting the sets in chronological order.

STEM: the whole class really bought into today’s activity which was to make igloos out of marshmallows.

Friday 17^th

Pyjama day!

PE: mat work

Maths: practiced instant recall of addition, including decimals

Literacy: ensured that the Mr Topley publisher documents were “bumped up” and ready to print for display.

Spent time looking at the learning intentions for all the individual pieces of work on display.

Update From Primary One

Welcome to this weeks blog. The Deans Decision Makers have been busy creating STEM challenges for our school advent calendar. The first challenge was to go on a nature walk and look for patterns in the environment. The children took lots of pictures and identified lines of symmetry in a number of objects. On Tuesday, our challenge was titled “Dancing Salt” (sound waves and vibrations). We had to place clingfilm tightly over a bowl then put salt in the middle and place the speaker in different position around the bowl and watch the sound waves create vibrations. We discovered that salt was too light and rice was a good alternative.

On Wednesday the children had to make an igloo using marshmallows and cocktail sticks. This was tricky but as they worked together they managed to create small igloos. Some managed to make a roof and opening for a door.

On Thursday the challenge was to use marshmallows and spaghetti to build and measure a tower.

It got a bit tricky so the children made snowmen instead. It is nearly Christmas after all.

Lots of good discussion, problem solving and fun had by all!

This week we read a beautiful book called Little Robin Red Vest. It is the story of a kind little bird who gives away his 7 vests to his friends who need them. On Christmas Eve he was cold and alone but Santa had been watching him and rescued him. Mrs Claus knits him a very special red vest and this is how the robin got his red breast. The children have drew robins for our winter display and designed vests. A lovely story well worth reading.

P3/4 have an exciting week

As part of the STEM challenge, we were learning about Fibonacci number sequences. 0, 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55 ……. We have been outside looking for patterns in the natural environment. We found spirals in the bases of fir cones.
