Happy Halloween!

We have had another really busy week in Primary one.  The children have taken part in a number of math’s challenges (as you can see below) . We have been ordering and writing  numbers, counting in 10,s, drawing number collections as well as identifying number patterns.

You will have noticed that the children now have tricky words as well as sounds to learn. They are updated weekly and your support in helping them to read and recognize them is greatly appreciated.

We have had great fun reading  Room on the Broom. The children have been retelling and ordering the story , discussing the characters and even making a new broom! We challenged P1 and P2/1 to collected items from the field outside the school to make the witch a new broom. The children enjoyed this task and the discussions that went on were thoughtful and imaginative. New parts to make the broom go faster, a bigger broom for more characters etc.

A big thank you to all parents who put in a tremendous effort in making fantastic costumes. I took a group picture before the disco, looking at it today on the smart board they thought they looked “really scary”. Autumn and Halloween art have been a big focus. We have a tremendous Pumpkin Patch. The children used a range of media including marbling, paint washes, chalk, line and shape to create a variety of pumpkins.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

P6/7

Last night many of our pupils enjoyed the Halloween disco and there were some great costumes on show.

In science this week we have been making paper helicopters to learn about air resistance, surface area and gravity. Next week we will apply our skills to make parachutes and learn about variables in experiments. We also learnt about Isaac Newton and his discoveries and tried out using force meters.

In writing this week we applied our descriptive skills to writing character descriptions. The characters we created will be involved in our story writing session on Monday.

Some pupils have been learning about order of operations in maths, whilst others have been developing skills in more challenging addition and subtraction calculations.

We are coming to the end of our block on basketball in PE and will be playing a small class tournament next week. Please remind your child that we have gym on a Tuesday and Wednesday as many pupils come without kit.

This week in Primary 2!

On Tuesday we had our learning breakfast. We had so much fun spending the morning with our families showing them what we have been learning in class!

This week in P.E. we learnt what an over arm throw is and how to use one of these when throwing a javelin! We had to make sure we were holding the javelin in the correct place and that our feet were in the right position. We had a competition to see who could throw their javelin the furthest!

For topic this week, we were learning all about Halloween. We learnt about the history of Halloween and why we celebrate it. We even made some spooky decorations for our classroom whilst practising our fantastic scissor skills!

In numeracy, we began looking at numbers to 100. We had to challenge ourselves to fill in lots of missing numbers on hundred squares and number lines. We also had many number puzzles to do, including number jigsaws and hundred square Tetris!

During writing, we were focusing on adjectives whilst also remembering to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We managed to write some super spooky Halloween stories using our fantastic imaginations!
