Roman Scavenger Hunt in P3 and P4/3

003 004 008 009 010 012

To finish our Romans theme this term, P3 and P4/3 had a Roman scavenger hunt. In groups of three, pupils were given a question sheet and they had to match the question with information hidden in the classrooms and corridor. They then had to answer the questions. All pupils enjoyed finding the hidden clues and in addition to finding out more about what Romans brought to Britain, they were able to improve their reading skills and reading for information.

Debating with P3 and P4/3

004 002 001        P3 and P4/3 were having a debate yesterday. They were split into two teams. One team had to be the Iceni tribe, whose leader was Queen Boudicca. The other team were from the Atrebates tribe. The Iceni were a Celtic tribe who hated Rome and the Atrebates were a Celtic tribe who wanted Roman things in Brittania. Each side had to think about the pros and cons and argue either for Roman or Celtic Britain. There were some excellent points made by both sides and it was clear that everyone has learned a lot about Romans and Roman Britain.

Antonine Guard Visits P3 and P4/3

P3 and P4/3 had a really exciting day yesterday. They had a visit from an Antonine Guard. He came dressed in full Roman uniform and told the pupils all about the Roman army. He showed the different weapons and armour that were used and some pupils had the chance to try and get past the Roman shield. Each child had a sword and shield and they practised marching and attacking in different formations. Then all pupils had the chance to try on chain mail armour, helmets and Roman army boots. They all had a fantastic time!

Roman Shields and Helmets in P3 and P4/3

013 014 012

002P3 and P4/3 have been extremely busy this week making equipment for Roman soldiers. They learned about the differences between Celts and Romans then had to design their own shields. The shields had to use Roman colours, have arrows, a centre gold piece to protect their hands and be symmetrical. Then we used silver and gold to create our own Roman soldier helmets.

Romans

Primary 3 have just started their new topic on the Romans.  They have looked at how Rome got its name through the story of Romulus and Remus.  They have also found out that Rome is built on seven hills.  They created paper mache models of the seven hills and the River Tiber and painted them.  They think they look very effective.

Wild About Scotland Bus

P4/3, P4 and P5 were learning all about Scottish wildlife last week. All P4 and P5 had the chance to go on the wild about Scotland bus where they were finding out about beavers and Scottish wildcats. The bus is an initiative run by Clydesdale Bank and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. Staff from the zoo were on the bus to teach pupils all about native wildlife. They learned about different habitats, compared fur and paw prints and tried to build an effective dam. While not on the bus, other groups were doing activities such as creating labelled drawings of beavers and drawing beaver habitats.
