P6B have enjoyed learning all about the nutritional value of different foods we eat on a regular basis.

By examining the nutrition tables, key ingredients and allergens on food packaging that had been collected, we were able to identify the wide variety of contents which the foods we consume contain. We recorded and compared our findings, referring to our previous learning where we used the Eatwell Plate and food pyramid.

Many of us were very surprised by the amount of salt, fat and sugar the food contained. We discussed what a diet high in these contents could do to the mind and body.

Skye – I was really surprised by how much salt apple juice contained compared to orange juice, which was much lower!

Jack – Interestingly, ‘Tangtastics’ contains elder-flower, grapes and kiwi. Some people think it must be a flavouring. I found out that a main ingredient in Doritos is corn, I didn’t know this!

Luca – I was very shocked by the amount of natural sugar contained in fruit. 

Hopefully, by developing our knowledge and awareness of food contents, we are now more able to make healthy choices which help us to maintain a balanced diet! Well done, P6B!

Literacy

This week we have been developing our ability to use a dictionary correctly. We know there are different reasons why we might use a dictionary –

Mia – to find a word that you may not know how to spell

Euan- to find out if the word is a verb, noun or adjective

Connor- to find the definition of a word

We have had fun working with a partner to find the definition of words that Mrs Little put up on the board. First we had to find the words though and that was the tricky part!

Denholm- if I was finding the word ‘last’ I would flick through the pages of the dictionary to get to the letter L then I would search the words that begin with ‘l’ and ‘a’ the word would be quite far down the list because the third letter is an ‘s’

Maths/numeracy

We have been having a great time with our numeracy lessons! As always we have lots of opportunities to develop our numeracy skills both written and mental. This week we played games such as nine snap, Harry Potter Maths, elimination, hit the button, loop cards and Tom Thumb. Some of us were using Numicon to create number bonds and we also used the fuzzy ball darts to help with counting in 10’s.

We have also been learning about chance and probability this week.

Jason- we played ‘play your cards right’ and this is about predicting what the chances were of a number being higher or lower than the number on the board.

Alfie- if there are three green cubes and two red cubes in a bag you are more likely to pick out a green one because there are more of them

Euan – if you have 7 balls in a bag and two are orange and the rest are black you have a two in seven chance of pulling out an orange ball.

We have been learning to play golf with Mr Jeffries.

Denholm- we were learning how to chip the ball

Kiara- we were learning about long distance and short distance putting.

Euan- I liked it when Mr Jeffries made a golf course and we got to play it

What a fabulous week this week in P2/1.  We have continued to learn about Eating like a Champ and have even had the chance to prepare and make our own fruit salad.  We are continuing to practice our number skills and have continued to work on improving our reading and phonic skills.  Only a couple of weeks to go and we are super excited about the summer holidays – lots of work to do before then though!

From Primary 2/1

(A note from Mrs Mansfield – please note that this is the last week of homework so that we have time to gather reading books and complete a stock take before the next academic session.  Thank you for your continued support)

As part of our healthy body’s topic, we have been learning about the organs. Working in groups, we used our research skills to find out about a specific organ. We found out the location and function of the organ as well as some other interesting facts. To share our learning, we selected some of the information we found to create a poster and included an illustration of the organ too.

We presented our posters in our groups to the class and we all enjoyed learning things about all the different organs!

Gabriel –  ‘Your stomach is on the left and the intestines is in the middle.’

Lauryn –  ‘The lungs are not same size!’

Noah –     ‘If the intestines are stretched they would be around 7.5 meters long.’

Luca –      ‘The brain contains 86 billion cells!’

Also, a big well done to P6B pupils who completed ‘Beauty & the Beast’ artwork to help to decorate the school on the galaday!

On Wednesday we met our new class teacher, Miss Wilson, and we got to see our new classroom.  We looked at patterns and made very interesting cat pictures. We made super holiday buckets, all about me writing and Miss Wilson looked at our writing. We had fun with our new P3 teacher and we are looking forward to going into P3 after the summer.

We made holiday snapshots with Miss Bollen and we listed our P3 worries and things we are looking forward to achieving.

In drama we have been practising our potted sports and we loved bouncing on the bouncy hoppers and running over the hoops.
