Problems in p2lg

This week we have been learning how to solve problems in Numeracy. We found it really tricky at first but are gaining confidence in our problem solving abilities. We have learned to work logically, to make a picture and to make a table to help us to solve problems. Mrs Gallagher was really impressed when some children started to make up some Castles themed problems of their own and we are going to have a chance to do more of this next week.

We have also been learning how to draw portraits to make a royal portrait gallery in our classroom. It’s going to be in an unusual place in our classroom, pop in next week and see if you can find our portraits.

We are very excited about our special show next week, look out for some pictures of us in our costumes coming up on next week’s blog post. 🙂

P2/1 A Time Capsule Arrived

This week Mr Welsh came into our class with a new clue. We had to unjumble some letters to find out where to go next. It was the office. Mrs White had our next clue which led back to Mr Welsh again. We found a box in a corner of his office. It had a padlock! Our key unlocked the box and inside was a time capsule. We have been busy drawing pictures and taking photographs to put in the time capsule.
The time capsule came from two aliens called Ziggy and Zaggy.

‘We found a treasure chest,’ said Demi-Leigh
‘I took a photo of Miss Bolland’s class,’ said Evie
‘I took a picture of Mr Welsh and Miss Henderson,’ said Kelsey
‘I love Ziggy and Zaggy and they’re the est aliens and they help us in class,’ said Freddie
‘I love Ziggy and Zaggy,’ said James
‘I love Ziggy and Zaggy, the best aliens in the universe,’ said Ellis
‘Ziggy and Zaggay are my friends,’ said Ben
‘Ziggy and Zaggay are brave,’ said Baillie
‘I was excited when Mr Welsh came in,’ said Eva

Internet Safety Week in Class 3

This week we have been learning about internet safety and how to stay safe when using other types of technology too.

We set up a cyber cafe in the sensory room and played the games on the Thinkuknow website.  You can try these games at home.  Simply follow this link.

www.thinkuknow.co.uk/8_10/cybercafe/

Here are some tips to remember when using technology:

Geordie – Don’t give out personal information online.

Jason – If you get an upsetting  or threatening text, don’t delete it.  Save it and show an adult.

Aidan – If you get a chain or hoax message, show a responsible person.  These can contain false  information.

We are going to learn more about staying safe when using technology next week.

Open morning was fun!

Thank you parents and grandparents for coming! It was great to see you and children were looking forward to your visit!

We had a great knowledge quiz on our ‘Egyptians’ topic, with the teams being children versus parents/grandparents. The competition was hard! Both teams gave a great performance and gained stickers!

Then, was time for the members of each family to create their own Egyptian jewellery. First we watched a short power-point presentation on the history of jewellery in Ancient Egypt. Then we made some amazing collar necklaces, while listening to ancient Egyptian music. Good job everybody!

Seeing Stars in Class 1

We really enjoyed listening to Lewis’ weekend news on Monday morning.  Lewis explained that he was looking up at the stars with his mummy.   Lewis and his mummy were using a telesccope to look at the stars!  Lewis counted seven stars.

We love to visit the Sensory Room.  This week we had an outer space themed Sensory Room!  The room was filled with beautiful lights, colours and images of the night sky.  ‘What beautiful colours!’ said Jayden.   We watched the stars circle the room and we were so excited when the moon appeared!  ‘It’s an angry moon!’ said Liam.

Open Morning Success

This week we learned about internet safety.  We thoroughly enjoyed watching ‘Kim and Lee’s Magical Adventure’ which taught us not to share personal information with people on the internet.

We have also been busy transforming our classroom into a pirate theme.  We have made a pirate ship and mermaid’s cove.  Watch out for the pictures to follow over the next few weeks!

Lastly, P1b would like to say a huge thank you to all of the parents and family members who took time to visit our classroom today.  We loved showing off our fabulous work and hoped you enjoyed getting an insight into our life at school.

P4a

This week was ‘Internet Safety Week’ and we have been learning about communicating with people in various situations as well as keeping ourselves safe when using the internet.

We also got a chance to look at another website in which we can compete against people around the world in Literacy, Maths and Science. Our favourite is the literacy one! There is a competition worldwide on

5 March* – World Literacy Day
6 March* – World Maths Day
7 March* – World Science Day
22 March – Global award presentations begin with the Official World Education Games Awards Ceremony, to be held in 2013 at the Sydney Opera House.

We have started practising these games in school and also have usernames to use at home.

We are learning about scripts and how to use them and write them. This will come in handy for our assembly.

Today our parents/grandparents got a chance to come in and see what we do in class. This is what we thoughtof it:

It was fun, exciting and amazing.

The best part was showing what we have learnt.

The parents/grandparents seemed to enjoy themselves too!

P4l Open Morning Adventure

Hello Everyone

Today we had our open morning and it was great to see lots of parents and grandparents joining in activities in our classroom.  One of the activities was to create a giant story with each person adding another sentence or two.  As it was such a wonderful story we have decided to publish here on our blog.  Each time the text style changes means it was a different person contributing.

John was bored. It was halfway through the summer holidays and he was fed up, so he decided to go exploring. He broke his piggy bank and took all his savings to spend on his adventure. John just had enough money to buy an aeroplane ticket to the rainforest. John had lots of fun doing this. Unfortunately he crashed and found himself surrounded by six gorillas. The gorillas liked him and thought he would be an active family member and they called him TARZAN! He liked it in the jungle with his new friends and also he made friends with a leopard.  The leopard asked him if he would like to come and meet his friends at the waterhole.  John and the leopard went to the waterhole, John met the leopards friend, the jaguar.  The jaguar thought John looked like a very tasty meal.  So John ran off deeper into the jungle.  John and the leopard were friends no more.  John walked deeper into the jungle for what seemed like ages. It was very dark, but in the distance he could see a light…. The light appeared to be coming from torches…held by poachers! John quickly hid as the poachers rapidly approached!  It was something, someone, someone wierd…

Thank you to everyone who wrote in our story book, the children thought you did a great job.  Here our some pictures from our ‘Open Morning’.

P2pg News

This week we really got started on our castle topic.  We looked at the different castles thoughout the medieval times starting with wooden Motte and Bailey castles and then moving on to the stone castles that we know today.  We learned about the murder holes, drawbridges, moats, and the portcullis.  We are now looking at the inside of the castle and what we will be changing our classroom into.  The children are really looking forward to this next week.

We also really enjoyed having our parents in to class this morning helping us to make our Coats of Arms.  We’re going to have these displayed in our Grand Hall (class) with all our other regalia and banners that we will be making!  We’ve already decided to call our castle King Arthur’s Castle of Balbardie and our tables are now called different clan names.

Well done P2pg for another good week!

P7 visit to Botanic Gardens

On Monday P7 visited the Botanic Gardens. On the bus there we spoke about old stories and when we got there we walked to a little jungle room and had our snack. Next we strolled to the aquarium where I bet Connor half his cookie that there wouldn’t be any piranhas. Let’s just say that was a very nice cookie! Next we visited an ancient tree, the oldest tree in the UK (over 320 million years old.) We trekked up to the Chinese Hillside and then proceeded to the gift shop. We then walked back to the den where we had some lunch.

After lunch we strolled to a glasshouse and we all split up into groups and had to locate some plants. We had to find strangler figs, vanilla plants, leafs which had good driptips and also mini bananas. We also saw a ginger plant and tried some in a sugar coating. In the next greenhouse there was a giant emergent tree. Emergent trees are the tallest in the rainforest and can grow up to 60 metres! We also looked at some bamboo and heard how it is used in the rainforest as a torture device!

Next we assailed to another part of the glasshouses which was really full of plants. There was a plant called Old Man’s Beard hanging from the vines and a deadly plant named Poison Arrow Bush which hunters use the poison from to kill monkeys. After that we shuffled to the big pond area and we saw cocoa pods, sugar cane, papaya and a little shop which showed all the foods found in the rainforest. Next we collected up our bags and it was time to go.

Some quotes:

“The best part was when Adrian used the blowpipe and blowdart to shoot the balloon monkey. It was so fun.” – Aisha

“It was really interesting.” – Murray

“It was good fun searching for all of the things like Old Man’s Beard and Vanilla pods. “ – Abbie

“We got to try some different foods and I discovered I like papaya!” – Ali

“I very much enjoyed the visit to the Botanic Gardens and I would happily go back!” –  Connor

Report by Rhona Donald p7b

This week in p2lg

This week we have started our castles topic. We have learned about some of the parts of a castle inside and out and we have started to turn our classroom into a castle.

Zoe “A portcullis is a jaggy door at the entrance of a castle.”

Cole “The soldiers shoot bows and arrows through the arrow slits in the walls.”

Harvey “The tallest building is called the keep.”

We are looking forward to our parents joining us to make some coats of arms this morning.

This week in P3b

This week we learned about writing a newspaper report and wrote one about Tutankhamun being crowned as king. We gave it a Fist of 5: some of us found it tricky!

In maths, we have been learning clockwise and anticlockwise. We know it will help with directions. We have been using: left and right, quarter turn, half turn, full turn, forward and backward.

Our art this week has been making pyramids using clay!

Ramsay said: It was fun because it was messy!

Geo said: I liked how the clay was soft.

Lucy said: I liked how the clay was easy to model.

We knew we had to work carefully so we didn’t handle the clay too much or the heat from our hands would dry it out.

We have been reading text and showing we understand it. Some of us finished the sentences; some of us read the story about ‘Under the bed’ and then answered questions. In our reading groups, we were asking each other questions that recalled parts of the book and explained why things happened.

We enjoyed discussing then making a poster about Energy Balance. In PE we enjoyed playing some team games! We used lots of energy! TEAM is Together Everyone Achieves More!

We Need Your Books!!

Thursday 7th March is World Book Day and P4l are going to run a ‘Book Swap’.  We really need your help to bring in any books you no longer read so someone can enjoy them and you can take a new book home.  Please have a look through your books at home and if you have any to spare please, please bring them in and hand them in to P4l.  On World Book Day you will have a chance to look at all the books and choose one to take yourself.

Thank you

Primary 2/1’s Magic Key!

This week Primary 2/1 received an interesting postcard which took them on a treasure hunt…

“Miss Henderson brought a card and it was a mystery. We had to follow the clues and it said where do you measure? I said there was a giraffe and that’s where I found the second card.” -Rowan
“We went to Mrs White’s office and there we found the next clue!” – Tom
“Then we went up to Miss Henderson’s office and we found the other clue and it had a note in it and the special key.” -Mya
“The key is a magic key” -Abbie
“I loved the tresure hunt.” – Kelsey
“It was really good fun!” – Charlie
“It was fun!” – Holly

We don’t know who sent the key or what it will open.  Some of the girls and boys think the key might have come from a king, a giant, a dragon or even an alien!  It’s a mystery.  We know that the next clue will arrive next Monday.  Sam worked out that’s “5 more sleeps.”  We can’t wait!

Electricity!

Today we attended an Electricity Workshop.  We learned how to keep safe around electricity, top tips include:

  • Not to climb towers (pylons)
  • Not to switch light switches with wet hands
  • Don’t stick a knife in the toaster, even if it is switched off.  Turn it upside down and shake it to get the stuck toast out
  • Don’t go fishing or fly a kite under the towers or near cables
  • Don’t touch cables with sticks etc.
  • Don’t go inside/over the fence to a sub-station, phone them to get your ball back
  • You can go to a power station with an engineer

We also learned about the underground cables which carry 400 000 volts.  The cables are very thick.  We also saw the insulators.

At the end we had a quiz….Dean was very speedy at pressing his buzzer! Congratulations Dean as he knew the answers too.

FOCUS ON CREATIVITY!

This week was short, but still many activities were going on!

Cary liked the fun in the rainbow room and making cards for his special people, mum and dad!

Dylan liked the semi-circle shape and used his knowledge in different ways. ‘I made a pancake in a semi-circle shape with play-dough. ’ ‘I made a semi-circle moon on my special card for dad!’

Caitlin said ‘I made cakes with the play-dough and pretend to eat them’.

Callum enjoyed creating his own special card for his family!

Caitlin wanted to add that she was also proud this week ‘I got a certificate and I am really happy!’

Aiden said ‘Oh, I missed some of these things, because I had a bad cough! But I watched telly in my room’.

More news next week!

Speedy Week in P4l

Lots packed in to a short week in P4l.  Amazing art with Mrs Clark on Wednesday.  Library, love, logic, pancakes and masks on Thursday and the week ended with Town Criers and shape puzzles.  We also created posters for the ‘Big Balbardie Book Swap’ we are going to run on World Book Day, 7th March.  If you have any books you don’t read anymore and would be happy to donate to the book swap please bring them in.

Bye for P4l
