THE BATTLE OF DUNKIRK by P7b

This morning p7b were learning about the Battle of Dunkirk and we’d like to share our learning with you. We’ve been using QUESTIONS FOR THINKING to help us with our learning and these came in very handy.

We used our UNDERSTAND skills to summarise the key events which happened:

Dean: “British troops went over to France in May 1940 to try and take back land from Germany.”

Isla: “Instead of pushing the Germans back they lost more land because the German army used Blitzkrieg fighting.”

Christopher S: “The British troops ended up stranded on a beach in Dunkirk with thousands of Belgian and French troops.”

Freya: “Winston Churchill organised for ships to come over from Britain to transport the troops off the beach. They saved 340,000 troops.”

We developed our APPLY skills by thinking about what would have happened  if:

Sam: “If the Battle of Dunkirk had been fully successful then I think the war would have been over a lot quicker and less people would have died.”

Christopher S: “If they hadn’t managed to rescue the troops then I think that D-Day might not have happened because there would have been no soldiers to fight it.”

We developed our ANALYSE skills by thinking about the arguments for and against Winston Churchill deciding to rescue the French and Belgian soldiers, along with the British:

FOR:

Christopher A: “If he hadn’t rescued them they wouldn’t have been friendly with the British and backed us up later in the war.”

Dean: “It would have made things awkward with France because we are just across the sea.”

Isla: “If we had just left them there it would have been just like handing them to the Germans.”

Rabeea: “If they had just left them then Hitler would have killed all the French and Belgian soldiers. Also, they were Allies in WWI.”

Eve: “If they had just abandoned them there wouldn’t have been a D-Day because it would have meant not enough soldiers.”

AGAINST:

Alistair: “They could have lost even more ships and planes and it might have been a suicide mission.”

Eve: “It would have been really dangerous due to all the German planes bombing. The German planes were called Stukas.”

Josh: “If they did try to rescue the others and got destroyed then all their good work would have been for nothing.”

We developed our EVALUATE skills by deciding whether we think Dunkirk was a success or a failure for the Allies:

Sophie M: “I think Dunkirk was a bit of both because they failed to push the Germans back but it was a success because we managed to send over boats to save the soldiers.”

Fraser: “I think it was a failure because the mission was to start pushing the Germans back but the opposite happened and the Germans made them retreat.”

Rebecca: “I think it was a bit of both because the target was to push the Germans back but they ended up on the beach but it was also a success because they managed to save the soldiers we needed for D-Day.”

Taylor: “I think it was a fail because even though they saved most of the people we still left all of the weapons and tanks behind for the Germans to take.”

Callum: “I think it was an epic fail because the mission failed and the Germans pushed us back and even though they saved the soldiers we lost the artillery.”

Rights Respecting Schools

We had our first steering group meeting for Rights Respecting Schools on Wednesday 30th October. Thank you to the pupils, parents and friends of the school who managed to make it along to this meeting in their own time after school. Our next meeting will be during the school day.

Parents/carers, if you’d like to come along we would be happy to welcome you to join in with our RRS work. Watch this space for the date and time!

Could each RRS rep please post their name and class here so we can see who they are?

Mrs Spence would like to meet all the reps on Tuesday 19th November at 10am in the PT office.

Class 2

We have been looking at how to keep safe on the internet. If you want to know more here is a link for Hector’s World. http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/5_7/hectorsworld/
We started reading the owl who was afraid of the dark. Plop, the main character in the story, found out about fireworks so we also have been learning about fireworks. We used WOW words when we explained to Plop what we now know.

Primary 7m

Primary 7m had a great first week back.

Nicole enjoyed working with her new group and completing the table challenge.

Todd loved taking part in the Big Balbardie Blether to discuss the house points.

Daniel M liked dressing down/ up on Friday and we all liked Ben’s clown costume!

Amber and Eilidh are looking forward to learning baout the rainforest this term.

We were  excited to find out that Mr Ross who came in to speak to us last term about his trip to America, took the thank you card we made him to meet with the new US Ambassador to the UK Matthew Barzun.

Sports in P3h

We were lucky enough to go to the Sports Centre and try lots of different sports.

At FOOTBALL the coach had different colours which meant different activities.  The green cone was for dribbling, the yellow cone was tap the ball with each foot and the red cone was to stop.  We thought that in football there were lots of different fun activities.

At BABMINTON we practiced hitting the shuttle-cock, Cameron M thinks his went the highest.  We played shuttle-tig.  We thought badminton was really good.

At TAE-KWON DO we practiced our punches and kicks.  We had to duck really quickly so the pads did not get us.  We remember that we can only do these moves with Master Elder.

At HANDBALL we practiced passing the ball so we could score goals against another team.  We thought was fun.

At RUGBY we played touch rugby, we all had tails that we tried to steal.  It was fun and we liked doing it.

At TENNIS we got to hit our balls over the net….Miss Holwill was very impressed with the shots, Andy could have some competition soon!

Class 3 visit Dynamic Earth

On Wednesday, Class 3, P6a and P6m visited Dynamic Earth.  We went to find out more about the Earth and space because our topic last term was space.  We found out lots and really enjoyed the whole tour.

Cary – The trip was great.  I loved it all the way through.  It was a little different at the beginning but then it got interesting.  The time machine was real good but even better than that was the showdome.  It was very big and the movie was on the ceiling.  It was great.  If you are planning to go here is a tip – when you go into the showdome, sit at the back as the back seats give you the best view.

Geordie – I liked the showdome.  It was awesome.  I also liked when the volcano errupted because the floor moved a wee bit.  I would really like to go back to Dynamic Earth because I would like to see if the ice berg has melted any more.

Josh – I liked the rainforest.  There was a lizard called a dragon lizard.  The snake was very hard to see because it looked like a vine.  I also liked the time machine.  I felt excited.

Fun at the Farm

Yesterday, some of the pupils and adults from classes 1, 2 and 3 met at Mill Farm for a special family day out.  We were very lucky to be joined by some of our brothers, sisters and cousins.

Some of us arrived early and spent the morning exploring the farm.  It was very wet but we didn’t mind as we had our waterproof jackets and wellies on.  We saw lots of animals including sheep, pigs and rabbits.  Joe and his sister, Jenna liked seeing the rabbits.

Once everyone had arrived we all went to the soft play.  The children had great fun whilst the adults enjoyed having a chance to relax with a hot drink.

Next, we had a delicious lunch in the picnic barn.

Miss Robertson and David’s brother Sam loved the crisps so much that they shared a big bowl full!

After lunch, we went back outside for a tractor ride.  It took us round the farm so we could see all of the animals.  Dylan and his brother Lucas liked when the tractor went over the bumps.

Although it was wet, our trip to the farm was great fun and we can’t wait for another family day out!

A Spooky Start to Term 2

Halloween

We had lots of fun in the Sensory Room this week.  It was transformed into a spooky house with lots of cobwebs, spiders and even a skeleton!  We enjoyed exploring the different textures in the spooky house and used Halloween torches to project scary images onto the walls.

We have been very busy creating some Halloween themed crafts.  We designed our own monsters, made scary skeletons and created spider art work.

Maths

We have been working hard at maths time to complete addition and subtraction calculations using a range of methods.  Cameron likes to use his fingers and sometimes he ‘just knows the answer in his head!’  Jayden is great at using his number line to help with addition and subtraction.  Lewis introduced us to a new iPad app which helps with our addition and subtraction.  Thanks Lewis!

We created a season wheel, which we will turn to help us remember which season it is and the order of the seasons.  We can link annual events with the different seasons, such as Easter, Christmas, Halloween and Bonfire Night.

Floor Books

Jayden has started to create his very own floor book.  Jayden enjoys telling the children and adults in class 1 about his holiday to India.  We enjoy listening to Jayden and asking him questions to find out more about India.  Jayden enjoys drawing the flag of India and showing his peers and teachers where India is on the globe.  We are looking forward to learning more about India as Jayden continues to add to his floor book.

Reflection Time

On Fridays, we take time to think about our week and what have been learning.  This week we enjoyed reflecting on our targets.  We each chose a small prize from the treasure chest as our targets had reached the end of our target treasure maps!

We also took time to discuss how the adults in class 1 help us.  Here are our thoughts:

David – ‘The adults in class 1 help me.  Mrs Nicol and David work.’

Jayden – ‘The adults in class 1 help me with making lighthouse.’

Joe – ‘Miss Cameron helps me with my drawing.’

Cameron – ‘The adults in class 1 help me when I hurt myself.’

Lewis – ‘The adults in class 1 help me with making my monster.’

Yolie – ‘Miss Barrie helps with my reading, Mrs Nicol helps with painting and Miss Cameron helps with drawing and scissors.’

Yolie created a wonderful model, to show how the adults in class 1 help.

P4b

In P4b we have had an exciting week with looking at the invention of chocolate and it’s history. We have worked very hard in our new teams to invent a new chocolate bar using different ingredients. Next week we will judge the wrappers that we made for the chocolate bars.

Have a great weekend!

P2e

We have had a very busy and fun start to the new term. We have been busy planning what we are going to learn about this term. Our new topic is all about the five senses. We can already name the five senses but we want to find out a little about how they work and what happens if you don’t have some of the senses. We enjoyed using Mr Potato head to match the senses to the correct body parts. We have also decided to turn our role play area into a hospital to help us learn more about the five senses and the body.

We had our Shared Start on Wednesday morning. We were showing parents some of our literacy activities. Some children spent this time in the writing area creating their own scary stories. Rachael, Ellis, Evie and Molly wrote some great stories which we shared during milk and story time. Some stories even used an ellipsis … and BOLD text to make the scary words really stand out.

This week we have enjoyed taking part in some halloween themed activites. Grace was pleased to be the winner of our ‘design a pumpkin’ competition. She drew a great picture and we put her deisgn on a pumpkin which she took home for halloween. We all really enjoyed dressing up for halloween and had some brilliant costumes on!

Spooky Sights in P1l

There were some very scary sights in P1l this morning as everyone came dressed up to raise money for this years float.  Today we also had our first ‘Big Balbardie Blether’.  We all went to different classrooms to be with people from our own houses and came up with ideas on how we could improve the house system in school. It was a big thing for us all to be with new people and in new places and we all did really well. Another first this week was outdoor P.E. Thankfully it was cold but dry on Thursday afternoon and we had a good time travelling in different ways in the play ground and moving carefully in our own space. So many firsts this week, we also started to practise songs for our Nativity and we have changed our house corner into a shop.  By far the most popular choice of shop was Tesco! Here are some things we enjoyed this week.

I like our new shop in class – Enci and Jay.

I have liked colouring in this week – Katie.

Playing in the shop has been good – Callum.

I liked playing with the cars and my friends at Golden Time – Miles

I like playing in the library – Catriona

This week l have been learning new sums – Katie.

A super week for everyone in P1l – well done.

Happy Halloween from P3/2!

We’ve had such a busy week, which ended on a high with dress up/down day on Friday.  Look at some of our scary and creative costumes below.

On Wednesday, the P3s took part in a football lesson from professional coaches and really enjoyed it.    Skye and Casey said they really liked learning how to dribble a ball.

On Thursday, the P2s visited Bathgate library and heard some spooky stories, whilst the P3s attended a Multi-Sports Festival at Bathgate Sports Centre.  Jack told everyone that Balbardie won – well done!  Murray showed off his excellent tackling skills in rugby and Gabriel told us that everyone tried their best and had fun.

A great start to a new term!

See you next week, P3/2

P6 school trip

On wednesday 30th october primary 6 went to dynamic earth. We had a very exiting time and we learned lots of new things. We went in a time machine that took us 50,000,000 years into the past. We also touched a large chunk of ice and we had a tasty lunch in the cafe.  We also learned a bit more about our solar system. Then went into a 4D cinema that was really 4D . It took us through deserts and rainforests and through a rhinos horn too!

By Antonia, Lauren K and Olivia

What abusy week we have had! Not only have we been on our school trip but we have had a dress up/down day and a visit from Mr Welsh. We think that Mr Welsh enjoyed learning with us because he looked happy 😀

This morning we worked in our Big Balbardie Blether groups, which was fun. It is always good to work in different groups and learn from each other.

Miss Anderson and P6a 😎

Primary 1m

The children arrived back in Primary One refreshed and keen to continue with their learning.  They were excited to find that our home corner has been transformed into a toy shop.  The children quickly shared their ideas on what they’d like to add to the toy shop and they were soon busy making open/closed signs and lots of price tags.

Here are some of the children’s comments:

Sophia “I liked putting the labels on the toys.  I made the book one hundred pounds.”

Teighan “I like scanning the toys and playing with the till.”

Louie “I like dressing up as the shopkeeper and giving my friends change.”

Jason Bonnar “I like being a customer and buying lots of stuff.  I have loads of money and they give me change.  I bought a puppet and a lego figure.”

Have a lovely weekend girls and boys and remember to take care near fireworks and bonfires!

P5d

We’re back!!

Everyone seems to have enjoyed the holidays and we are all refreshed and ready for the new term.

We are all excited to see  the new look house point system! We all have the chance to design a new shield to represent each house system.

Rachel is busy designing a new shield for Hardy House.
