Victorian Learning in P5m

P5m visited the Bennie Museum last week and learned all about Victorian toys and what they were made from.

We learned that Victorian toys were made from wood, fabric, metal and sometimes porcelain. Toys were not made of plastic like they are today and there were no electronic toys!!

Victorian toys included:
thaumatropes
skipping ropes
china dolls (only the very wealthy)
marbles
sling shots
bogies
jacks
hobby horses
skittles

Some of these toys we still play with today.

Here are some other things we learned this week.

Ava has learned how to write instructions ‘How to make a peg dolls’

Leon learned that Victorian children played with bogies and peg dolls

Lisa has learned how to say sunday in French – dimanche and that Newgate was a prison during Victorian times.

Ross thinks the Victorians are awesome!

Eva learned how to say the days of the week in French and in topic learned about Victorian toys and how they were made.

Liam has enjoyed learning about The Chimney Child

Sophie learned how to make a Victorian peg doll and how to use time connectives when writing instructions.

We are all looking forward to learning about what school was like in the Victorian days! I wonder who the class dunse will be!!

Highlights from this week in p3/2

This week we started our Roman Families topic. Everyone has taken a great interest in Rome and where it is and learning about life in Roman times. We have especially enjoyed learning about the story of how Rome was founded. Why not ask us to tell you the story about the twin boys?  Our other highlight this week is finding out about Roman artefacts. We have all enjoyed learning about artefacts and thinking about what each object tells us about life in Roman times. A few pupils were able to tell the rest of the class about artefacts they found in and around their own homes and we were fascinated by the Bovril bottle that was found in the steps of Balbardie PS in 2010 that had been there for some time. Its great to see History come alive! We hope everyone enjoys the Home Learning project!

Learning is Fun! p4g

Last weeks highlights were:

Football and Egyptians

Over the last term we have been lucky enough to be taking part in some football training. We have learned and practiced different skills like ball control and accuracy when passing. This week we got to take part in a football festival which was great! We spent the first half practicing our skills and getting warmed up and then after break playing matches. We all saw a huge improvement in our skills and were good sports doing the game.

This week we have also started being Tomb Raiders. We have learned about the importance of the Nile. We have set up a research tent and even discovered an archaeological site….we are wondering what treasures we will discover!

P4b

Another jam packed week!

This week we finished off writing our Scots poems about animals. They wur really guid!  We  learnt about Robert Burns; who he was and why he is so important. We looked at poems that he wrote as well as other Scots poems. We all had a chance to present our poems to the rest of the class and Mrs Ghafoor had a really tough choice picking three of the best to go forward to the Burns Poetry Final. On Friday we learnt about the Burns supper and learnt that this is held all over the world but it follows the same layout everywhere!

Our class finalists were Kari Nixon, Christopher Drysdale and James Cochrane.

James Cochrane was the overall Winner in P4b.

Well done to all who tried – the standard was very high!

We ended our week by holding our own Burns Supper. We listened to Scottish music and tried Haggis, neeps an’ tatties. Some of us loved the haggis and some of us were a ‘wee bit feared’! We recited Scots poetry and finished with”‘Three Craws’. We heard this in the P2 assembly. P2 did a fantastic job with their singing – even when technology let them down!  A great assembly P2.

Thank you very much to Mrs White, Mrs Murray and Mrs Meek for making our supper and serving us this special dish!

Enjoy your weekend.

P2e

We have a had a very busy week in Primary 2e. We had our class assembly today. We were all a bit nervous but we managed to speak clearly to our audience. We all had a great time performing in our assembly. Miss Elliot is very proud of us and was very impressed with our performance. We had a big audience as lots of parents, grandparents and other family members and friends came along to see us!

As well as practising for our assembly, we have worked hard in other areas. We have been learning more about Scotland and some famous people who come from Scotland. We recognised a few famous faces such as Susan Boyle and Andy Murray. Freddie even recognised William Wallace. We learned a lot about Robert Burns and listened to a recital of ‘Address to a Haggis’. We all enjoyed dancing to Auld Lang Syne.

On Wednesday we joined up with P2H and had a Scottish celebration. We played peevers out in the playground and we learned some Scottish dances. We then tried some Scottish foods. We had the chance to try haggis, neeps and tatties, shortbread, oatcakes, cheese and irn bru. We also got a little gift to take home which included homemade shortbread and tablet.

This week in P1b…

On Monday we worked with Primary 4 to complete some Scottish activities. We worked with a partner to learn the Scottish Dance The Gay Gordons. In class the P4’s also helped us to learn the Scottish names for different pieces of clothing.  We learned that glecks are glasses, goonie is a dressing gown, breeks are trousers, gutties are gym rubbers and lastly a peenie is an apron. To learn these words we played pin the clothes on the girl, port and starboard (with a Scottish twist), pairs and a colour match task.

On Tuesday Mr MacDonald visited us to tell us all about Island life.  We found out that Mr MacDonald grew up on the Isle of Lewis.  We learned different ways of getting to the island and were fascinated that a ferry can carry cars on board.  He also showed up pictures of the, the local light house, beach, the pier and his house he lived in.  We learned lots of interesting facts and loved asking questions at the end.  Thank you to Mr MacDonald for speaking to us-we really enjoyed it.

Class 3 Think Writing Time is Awesome

At writing time this week, we had to try to improve our writing by adding wow words.

Geordie  – It was cool and awesome to write wow words.  It makes my writing much better.  One of my wow words was ‘screeched’.

Josh – I gave myself a thumbs up.  I used the word ‘hurried’ instead of ‘ran’.

Liam- I liked my writing this week. The pictures make it fun and also help me.

Liam wrote ‘The car skidded on the ice’.

Callum- I wrote about a story. It was very long. There was a boy, a girl, a robber and lots of others. It’s a work in progress story from the never ending story game.

We would like to challenge you to improve these words:

Rights and Day for Change 2014

Every year, UNICEF UK’s Day for Change focuses on a different theme. In 2014, Day for Change is all about education. Going to school gives children the chance of a brighter future but about 68 million children around the world still don’t have access to education.

Together, we can change this. By taking part in Day for Change, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to go to school. We would ask that your child makes a donation on Friday 7th February 2014 towards this fantastic cause on our dress down day. Change your clothes to help change a life – support Day for Change!

UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. They work with families, local communities, partners and governments in more than 190 countries to help every child realise their full potential. UNICEF supports children by providing health care, nutrition and education.

P5d

Table of the week – Minions 760 points

Congratulations to Eve on being chosen to recite her Scottish poem at the finals next Tuesday! Well done to the P5d runners up, Ava and Ray.

TOPIC

On Wednesday this week we visited the Bennie Museum as part of our topic work learning about toys in the past. We learned some skipping rhymes and some Scottish rhymes that children would gather together and say during their playtime at school. We are also looking at how to write a biography of Queen Victoria.

Mhairi H – I was surprised to find out that poor Victorian children might only get an apple, an orange and a sugar mouse in their Christmas stocking.

Here’s Shaun B playing with a Gird and Cleek.

Maths

Our mental maths this week has focussed on subtraction and as always our times tables. We have also started learning more about 2D shape. Some of us are learning about sides, corners and angles while others have been learning to identify which shape will tile. We’ve had lots of fun making up tile patterns in our jotters.

Sam D – I have learned that when a shape tiles the tile pattern goes on forever but shapes like a pentagon and circle don’t tile because they leave gaps.

Class Novel

It won’t be long now until we finish our class novel The Boy in the Dress. We have had lots of very interesting discussions about this book. We also designed a magazine cover that Dennis (the boy in the dress) would like. We all agree that Shaun H designed a very eye-catching and interesting cover by combining a superhero theme with dress designs.

Have a good weekend !

P1l This Week

Hello Everyone

Friday again, the weeks seem to go so quickly.  This week we enjoyed lots of different activities.  On Monday we listened to the story of Katie Morag and the Tiresome Ted and talked about the different emotions Katie felt.  We had a circle time and shared our own experiences before drawing faces of Katie Morag as she goes through the story.  On Tuesday morning we all had the chance to bake porridgies with Mrs Jamieson and in the afternoon we ate them, they were delicious.  We had a great time on Tuesday afternoon when Mr MacDonald came to talk to us about his life growing up on a Scottish island.  He had some super pictures and we asked him lots of great questions.  It turns out Mr MacDonald has seen a lot of sharks and dolphins. With Mrs Spence we followed on from our work on Katie Morag and wrote about a time we had felt angry, it turns out a lot of us can get quite angry with our brothers and sisters! Thursday morning was buddy time and this week we read our new books with our buddies, they were all very impressed with how well we are doing.

Bye for now.
