P3b

We have had a busy week learning about our new topic ‘The Ancient Egyptians’. We found out about a little boy called Manu and his family. The family had a special gold necklace which we got to look at in class. We found out about the different jobs in Ancient Egypt and found out that girls didn’t go to school and only the rich boys went to school. We were all very shocked!  We also got to design clothes for slaves and Pharaohs which were different from the clothes we wear today.

P3e

We have had a fun week in primary 3 learning about our new topic. We are looking forward to learning lots about the Egyptians. This week we have been finding out about Egyptian jobs. We now know about the roles of a Pharaoh, Priest, Scribe, Farmer and Slave. Most of us would like to have been a Pharaoh as they were rich and got to make up the rules of the land. We also learned that most children did not go to school. Girls were not allowed to go to school at all! Some boys went to school to become scribes. We look at Egyptian clothing and jewellery. The rich people of Egypt wore fancy clothes which were all different colours and patterns. They also all wore make up, even the men. We created our own Egyptian pattern necklaces.

We look forward to learning more about Egypt next week.

Class 3’s Rainforest Adventure Begins!

135_1323135_1325135_1326135_1327135_1328This week we started our rainforest adventure. We have been exploring rainforest layers, rainforest animals and rainforest sounds.

Josh: We have been learning more about the rainforest. The Amazon is a rainforest. We made paper plate snakes using sponge patterns and crazy edge craft scissors. On Tuesday we went Out and About to the library and found rainforest books for our topic. I enjoyed finding facts about Jaguars.

Cary: We are starting to research animals from the rainforest. I couldn’t choose between the bat or the eagle so I am going to research both and compare them. I think the eagle will win because it will hunt the bat. Both animals hunt at different times.

Geordie: I have learned lots of interesting facts about trees, animals and plants that live in the rainforest this week. I enjoyed writing this week. I tried really hard to use wow words to make my story interesting. My story is about a snake and Mat the tree cutter.

Caitlin: This week we went Out and About to the library. I enjoyed finding books to help us with our topic. I also found two books for me to read at home. At music and drama with Mrs Innes we were learning to dance and move like people and animals in the rainforest. The music we are performing to sounds like we are in a rainforest.

Callum: I enjoyed Out and About. We went to the library. We got rainforest books to help us with our topic. We had a visitor with us. I was very helpful and walked with her to keep her company. I am using the books to research monkeys. I found out some funny facts. They are very cheeky.

Class 1 visits Egypt

On Monday we found a mystery bag in Class 1. We investigated what was inside it. We discovered that it was full of things to do with Egypt. This is going to be our new topic. We are very excited to find out lots of new facts about Egypt.

Lewis – I was trying to be an Egyptian by wearing a collar. It was good fun.

IMG_0873

Jake pulled lots of things out the bag. He liked the Egyprtian man. He enjoyed dressing him in his desert clothes.

IMG_0867

Joe – I was learning about Egypt with Gabriel.

David – I am playing with the Egyptian man.

Gabriel – I was being a sphinx and I saw an Egyptian mummy.

In the sensory room we imagined that we were flying off on holiday to Egypt.

Yolie – Sunshine! I was going on holiday with my pink and white suitcase.

IMG_0890

On Thursday Mrs McClafferty from P5m to class to visit us. She did money work with some of us.

Jayden – Mrs McClafferty came to class to teach us maths. We counted up the coins.

P5d

Another great week!

We are very lucky in P5d to have a teaching student to help us with our learning over the next 5 weeks.

Mrs Duncan did a super lesson with us in maths this week. We were learning about dividing and we got to use match attacks to help us which we thought was great.

100_1938

We are also learning about time, some of us are learning about transferring analogue into digital format using quarter to and quarter past, some are learning to work with digital time e.g. 9:50, 12:40 and others are learning about the 24 hour clock.

We did our writing through our topic this week using the writing planners we did last week to help us to construct a biography of Queen Victoria. We are becoming so much better at self assessment because we were able to check if we had all the correct dates and information before showing it to Mrs D.

We had a good time practising for the Burns poetry competition. Viggo took first place and Meadow and Brooke were runners up in P5d.

100_1940

We had a great time on Thursday morning learning about our minds and how we learn. We thought about whether we are born smart or not and lots of us thought we weren’t born smart but now we have changed our opinions. What do you think ?

That’s it for another week. Have a great weekend!

P1w made nature pictures!

This week we made nature pictures! It was very fun and we all impressed Miss Wilson so much.

FIRST we looked at pictures of what we were going to make outside using parts of nature like sticks, stones and snow!
THEN we went outside and collected lots of materials.
LASTLY we created pictures of ourselves using the nature materials we collected.

Here are some of our pictures:

Oor week in p7b with Tam o’Shanter

This week we have been learning about the Robert Burns poem, Tam o’Shanter.

Jack: “In the poem Tam is an alcoholic who loves drinking in the pub with his best pal Soutar Johnie.”

Paul: “A woman warns Tam that he might drown or something else terrible might happen if he doesn’t stop drinking so much.”

William: “The pub shuts and Tam must go home so he gets on his horse called Meg (Maggie)”

Lauren C: “He passes the bad bit of town and he sees lights coming from Kirk Alloway which is supposed to be haunted. He is feeling brave and not afraid because he is drunk so goes and has a look!”

Lauren U: “He looks inside the church and sees the devil playing bagpipes. The devil is a big hairy black dog.”

Callum: “While the music is playing, warlocks and witches are dancing. Most of the witches are old and ugly hags but then Tam spots…”

Harry: “…a beautiful witch named Nannie and she is wearing a white shirt called a cutty sark. Tam watches her dance.”

Chloe: “Tam is so impressed with her dancing that he shouts out WEEL DONE CUTTY SARK and all at once the room is dark!”

Kai: “All the witches and warlocks come out the church and chase Tam. He gets on his horse and rides away heading towards the bridge.”

Antonia: “He needs to cross the bridge because he knows they can’t cross running water but before he gets there Nannie rips off Meg’s tail!”

William: “The moral of the poem is that if you are drinking too much or thinking about women too much, you’ll end up in trouble!”

Who has impressed?

Lauren C: “Antonia and Lauren K have impressed me this week because we have quite a tough piece in music but we pulled through by working together.”

Lauren K: “Emily has impressed me because she has been concentrating and working really hard this week.”

Taylor: “Mr Berginis has impressed me because he is a good Scottish dancer!”

Emily: “Lauren K impressed me because she is really good at the Scottish dancing and she helped me get better at it.”

William: “Declan impressed me with the score he got in his Big Maths Beat That.”

Finlay: “Paul impressed me with his Aladdin peformance. He had a big part but learned all his lines.”

Chloe: “Everyone in the class impressed because I think they did excellently in their Aladdin performance.”

Lauren C: “Olivia impressed me because even though she didn’t have a big part she was very good at it.”

Mr Berginis: “I absolutley loved watching the class perform Aladdin last week and I was so impressed with the confidence they showed performing and the hard work they put into rehearsing and preparing.”

Class 2 Set Sail!

The Vikings

We had great fun in the Sensory Room this week with Mrs Laing. The Sensory Room had been transformed into a Viking Longship! The boys in class 2 dressed up as Vikings with a tunic and helmet. There was a giant red sail on the Longship and even a fire pit and pot for the boys to cook some breakfast before setting sail. The boys used props and their imagination to show what they would have done on the morning before setting off on a Viking voyage. They woke up, made breakfast, got dressed, packed their weapons, said goodbye to family members and set sail!

Our Sensory Room role play helped us with our writing. We wrote in our Viking diaries about the morning of our voyage. We included lots of important information in our diaries and remembered to write about how we were feeling. We wrote on the front cover of our diaries in Viking Runes!

‘I liked being in the Viking Longship.’ Dylan

‘I liked pretending that animals lived in my Viking house. A cow!’ Liam

‘I enjoyed packing the stuff in the Longship.  I packed a shield and my weapons.’ Jamie

‘I liked when the big wave came, I was making sure that our boat was running smoothly.’ Cody

‘My favourite was the same as Cody, the waves.  I dropped my weapons in the ocean by mistake!’ Aiden

‘I liked writing in my Viking Diary!  I got a certificate.’ Cameron

P4m W/B 12.1.15

This week P4m have been preparing power point presentations about famous Scottish people. We have been very lucky and been able to use the Net- books to do our research and to explore how to transfer all of our information onto a power point. We are looking forward to hearing all the groups present next week! Have a look at some pictures of us working together in our groups to get our presentations ready.

We have also been working hard to practice our Scottish poems for the Poetry competition. Well done to Katya, Jack and Skye for getting into the final. We will hear who the winner is next week.

To top off our very Scottish orientated week we had great fun learning and practicing the ‘Gay Gordon’s’ ceilidh dance in the classroom!

Happy New Year from Class 1

Class 1
would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! We were all happy to come back to
school and are looking forward to setting ourselves new targets.

We have had
a busy start to the term. Miss Waddell did some sensory circuits with us.

Yolie – I’m sitting
on the big yellow ball. Bouncing up and down on the ball. Through the tunnel
with Miss Waddell.

It was Joe’s
birthday this week so we had a party in class with some snacks, music and
games.

Joe – We had
a party in class 1 for my birthday. It was fun. Dawn said I have been good in
swimming. I was swimming on my back.

Our Buddies helped us to learn about “Chinese New Year”.

This starts about half-way through February. We learned that this year, 2015 will be “The year of the goat” and the last time it was “The year of the goat” was in 2003. Our buddies told us “That was the year we were born!”

We learned about the story of Jade Emperor organising a race to measure time. Each animal would be honoured with a year depending on the order of them winning a race. The goat in the story worked in a team with the monkey and the rooster to cross the river. The P7’s helped us the work out that next year, 2016 will be “The year of the monkey”.

We played a game of “Chinese New Year snakes and ladders”. It was a race to reach 100 because if we landed on a dragon we had to slide down the page and hope to get back up a ladder. Our P7 buddies were great – they didn’t mind us having another shot if we got a six on the dice but they only took one shot when it was their turn.
In art, we learned about a lady artist who was born in America. Her name is Georgia O’Keeffe. She painted huge flowers close up and painted them in lots of lovely colours. We watched a video of her work before sketching our favourite flower on paper. Next week we are going to paint them. Have a good week from P1L.

Happy New Year from Class 3!

Class 3 have been very busy setting targets for the new year, getting to know the new extension and starting our new topic all about the rain forest.
Cary: I really enjoyed eating lunch in the new dining hall. It’s an amazing building. It has lots of space.
I am looking forward to the summer because I will get a long holiday and can be outside lots. The rainforest will be a good topic because there will be lots to learn.

Josh: The first thing I am looking forward to is my birthday. My birthday is in February, I am going to be 12. This year I am going to save my pocket money every week. I will have £520 at the end of the year. I am going to be rich! Snakes and spiders live in the rainforest. It is hot and wet there.

Caitlin: I birthday tomorrow I am enjoyed my birthday/ I went to the soft play my friend slept over. We went to pizza hut for dinner. We had a party in Class 3. It was good fun. We played games and had treats.

Callum: I really enjoyed the tribal music. There was a big drum beating. Caitlin’s party was great fun. I won a game.

What a great week in school but what weather outside !

This week we have been working so hard learning our Scots poems whilst outside there have been gales and snow as well as sunshine…typical Scottish weather !

Well done everyone for practising the poems and being able to recite in front of a quality class audience.

Our class winners were Suvi, Alfie, Ava, Ben and Sophie…Congratulations all of you for working so hard on your actions and your Scots words.

The three children chosen to represent the class at Monday’s recital are:-

Suvi for The Furry Hat By Lydia Robb

and

Ben and Ava for The Sair Finger By Walter Wingate…Good luck !

We started our new topic this week also…The Radical Romans. There is so much for us to learn about. We started with Romulus and Remus and also the Roman Army….we started making posters about being a Roman soldier.

Did you know you had to be able to march 2o miles a day carrying all your weapons aswell as wearing your armour ?

Enjoy your weekend 🙂

P3e

We have had a very busy first full week back at school. This week we have learning about Scots language and have been practising a Scots poem for the Burns Competition. We have been learning about some Scots words and phrases. We read an extract from Geordie’s Mingin Medicine and had to find all the examples of Scots words. We learned that a cludgie is a word for the toilet and muckle means big. In drama we have been working on the story of the three little pigs, but in Scots language. Miss Elliot challenged us to retell the story in Scots language. We changed some key words into Scots such as grumphy for pig and heched and peched for huffed and puffed.

In writing we had to write an alternative ending to the traditional story of the three little pigs. In some stories the wolf dressed up as a pig to try and trick the little pigs and in some stories the wolf was actually a nice and it had all just been a big misunderstanding.

In maths we have been learning about time and have been focusing on quarter past and quarter to times. We made our own clocks which we are going to take home next week to help us practise at home.

Hope you have a great weekend!

P5d

It’s Friday! What a great week we’ve had in P5d.

This week we have been learning how to write a biography. We had to use the netbooks and do some research to find facts about Queen Victoria. First we made a timeline then we used a writing planner to record dates and interesting information about Queen Victoria’s life.

Jamie – Using the netbooks made finding fact more interesting. It was cool.

David – I found out that Queen Victoria ruled for 63 years and 7 months

James – Her doctor was Sir James Young Simpson

Aidan – In 1847 Queen Victoria bathed in the sea for the very first time.

In Maths this week we have been going over past learning so that we can remind ourselves of the skills we have learned so far. We are now learning about division and time.

Above and beyond – Zoe wrote a short story at home and she also illustrated it. She brought it into class and we read it at milk time. We all agree it is a fantastic story and if any other class would like to borrow it to read please ask.

That’s all folks! Have a great weekend!

There’s no such thing as a gruffalo!

This week, we have been reading a new story in class – “The Gruffalo” by Julia Donaldson. Our whole class loves this story and finds it really funny.

Declan Detective wants to know what happens next in the story. We drew a picture of what actually happened at the end, then we drew a picture of what we wanted to happen. Here are some of our made up endings:
– Lewis changed his ending so that the mouse would eat the gruffalo
– Katie made the gruffalo squirt a water gun onto the mouse’s face!
– Lily made Rapunzel and Ariel arrive and save the mouse from the gruffalo
– Lucas drew a picture of the gruffalo kicking the mouse into the air and then eating him
-Donna made the gruffalo very kind, then the mouse kicked the gruffalo down a hole!

As you can tell, all our Primary 1s have very good imaginations!!

Next, we talked to Christopher Character who wants to know more about the characters in the story. We drew pictures of the gruffalo and then thought of describing words that we listed next to him. Some of the words to describe the gruffalo were:
-angry
-prickly
-scary
-ugly
-mad
-spikey

We are looking forward to reading the Scottish version of this story soon 🙂
Have a lovely weekend!
