The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award: a vocational asset to supplement your qualifications in the increasingly competitive fight to gain a university place. It truly demonstrates that you are a versatile individual, something which is well sought-after among many employers.
Personally, I attained the Bronze Award last year and decided to take on the additional challenge of Silver to further my interpersonal skills.
In the scenic surroundings of the isle of Arran, myself and four other team members completed the expedition section of this award – spending three days trekking all over the island. Fortunately, the weather was on our side which (as we had learned the hard way on our Bronze qualifier!) makes a monumental difference to the difficulty and morale of everyone in the team.
In the weeks leading up to the trip, we invested our time carefully planning our route cards to reduce the possibility of getting lost and thus, increasing each member’s awareness of what the walk would entail. Setting off early on Thursday morning, we took the ferry to Brodick and, ignoring our slight seasickness, we navigated our way to Glen Rosa campsite. Once there, we promptly pitched our tents and cooked our meal before the darkness and inevitable rain began for the night.
Naturally, the middle day was the most challenging due to the already sore feet and aching joints. However, the views were certainly the most picturesque. Climbing up the side of Goatfell and back down a cliff edge, we were able to appreciate the landscapes surrounding us. Exhausted, we made it the wild camp by Sannox Bay just in time for sunset. With the sights of home comforts in all our minds, we started our final leg before sunrise in order to finish our walk in perfect time for the ferry’s departure.
Would I deem this experience worth it? Definitely. While the blisters may outlast your trip, the sense of achievement and satisfaction outweighs the dampeners. There is no denying that the Duke of Edinburgh Award will stretch you to your limits, both emotionally and physically.
However, considering it’s esteemed recognition within the job market and benefit to personal development, the award is a life-changing opportunity; truly making the world your oyster.
