This week I will be reviewing the athletics club in St Andrews and St Brides, run by Luke Kirwan on a Monday after school (3 – 4 o’clock).
For all years from S1 – S6, the athletics club train at the track in the John Wright sports centre.
Luke reckons there are over 30 people involved in the athletics club. Luke also couches at EKAC, East Kilbride athletics club. He also is a proud former pupil of St Andrews and St Brides.
When I asked Luke about athletics he said that it’s not just about running -there is a practical element in it too. Field events require you to run, jump or throw.
So, if you’re not that great at running you could be amazing at field events. Some of these include:
Javelin; where you try to throw a long spear as far as you can. There is also long jump, were you should run as fast as you can in a straight line, then jump on a wooden block on the ground and land in a sandpit. For that you need to try and jump as far as you can.
Like netball you can also get out of school for competitions which again is a great benefit…!
Lastly athletics is an amazing sport, which has many different options to choose from. It is a sport for all ages, young to old. The club is very consistent and is good fun.
So, if this review appeals to you athletics might be an excellent choice for you!
