Millions all over the world celebrate Easter, but not everyone realises that Easter time is not just about chocolate eggs and Easter bunnies, but about how Jesus sacrificed his life to give us a better one.
To begin with, on Palm Sunday, Jesus rode into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover festival and while he was arriving many people crowded to see him and to wave palm branches at him. However not everyone was pleased to see him (leaders, authorities,e.t.c) and labelled Jesus a troublemaker and someone who was to be watched.
Holy Thursday, when Jesus soon realised that his time was nearly over he gathered his twelve disciples to share one last meal- ‘The Last Supper’- where they shared bread, which he described as his body and they shared wine, which he described as his blood to explain that he was soon about to die. Later, after the meal, Judas betrayed Jesus and handed him over to the Roman soldiers who would decide what to do with him.
On Good Friday, the Roman soldiers took Jesus to Pontius Pilate who asked a crowd outside whether he should be condemned to death. The crowd all agreed and said he should. Jesus was then made to carry his own cross to his execution and placed next to two criminals, where the hill overlooked the city.
Three days after his crucifixion, Easter Sunday, women who came to visit his tomb saw that the huge stone that was in front of it had rolled down the hill and that the tomb was empty. Jesus was seen on that day and the days that followed and visited his old friends and to confirm with them that he had indeed arisen from the dead and fulfilled the prophecy.
For that reason, Easter is a celebration and should be looked on as a happy time where a new chapter can begin.
