Vietnam war hero turned presidential candidate, Senator John McCain has died at age 81 after being diagnosed with brain cancer.
A statement from his office announced McCain died on Saturday with his family by his side.
The senator was diagnosed with glioblastoma in July 2017 and was undergoing medical treatment. After over 30 years on Capitol Hill as the Arizona senator, McCain left Washington in December 2017. On Friday, his family disclosed that McCain had decided to stop cancer treatment.
Many politicians have tweeted, thinking of the family and paying tribute to the six-term U.S. senator.
.@SenJohnMcCain lived a life of service to his country, from his heroism in the Navy to 35 years in Congress. He was a tough politician, a trusted colleague, and there will simply never be another like him. My thoughts and prayers are with Cindy and his entire family.
