Glasgow hosted a carnival of sports in the form of the 2018 European Championships, alongside Berlin.

This years multi-sporting event was held right in our backyard, across Glasgow and Scotland. The inaugural event was held over 11 days from the 2nd – 12th August to celebrate European sport. Glasgow and Scotland held events for six of the seven sports that were involved in this years Championships which were the, Aquatics, Gymnastics, Golf, Cycling, Rowing and Triathlon whilst the final event, Athletics, was being held in Berlin.

 

How did our own GB team do?

The Great Britain team of the 2018 European Championships made a great appearance to its own home crowd here in Scotland. They managed to finish an astounding second place on the medal table topping the other eight countries, however finishing just behind Russia with GB on 26 gold medals and Russia on 31 golds. However out of the whole competition Great Britain came away with the most medals over all finishing with an astonishing 74 medals from all seven sporting events.

 

Great Britain athletes who stood out

Several athletes stood out at this years championships, however there was two GB athletes who stood significantly. Dina Asher-Smith achieved gold in the 200m sprint double becoming the first British woman to complete the European sprint double. To achieve this outstanding result Dina bet the two time world champion in the 200m race, securing her a gold medal at this years European Championships in Berlin. She also achieved 2 other golds in the 100m and in the 4x100m relay taking her total of medals up to three golds overall.

Another athlete who stood out to the crowd was freestyle swimmer Adam Peaty. Peaty set a new championship record to achieve a well deserved gold medal in the 50m breaststroke competition. Adam also won golds in the 100m breaststroke, in the 4x100m mixed relay race and also in the men’s relays making him become a three time quadruple European Champion. He also managed to achieve LEN’s (Lingue Europeenne de Natation- French European Swimming League) athlete of the year award for his exceptional performance in this years sporting event. Adam Peaty is now the most successful British male swimmer of all time.

This years European Championships in Glasgow definitely exceeded everyone’s expectations and it will for sure be a championships to remember here in Glasgow and to all 283 athletes who took part in this well remembered event of 2018.
