It’s that fabulous time of the year again where you see kids scavenging every shop looking for the coolest new backpack and their teary parents looking in dismay at the price – it’s back to school season!

I love school. That statement is probably the most unpopular opinion in the world, why because school has been given a label of being a place of silent learning with strict teachers and very restrictive rules but I think school is simply misunderstood. There are thousands of reasons to hate school but there are millions of reasons love it!

Setting You Up For Life

The first and most important reason to love school is that it sets you up for your adult life, as cliché as it sounds school does help you in your mature life. Contrary to popular beliefs we make a lot of our own choices at school. We can choose what subjects we want to do and if you are not keen on studying a subject, you can change that subject for another one.

Teachers want the best for you! Teachers aren’t strict because they hate fun and they don’t shush you because they hate the sound of happiness, they do this because they have high expectations for you and they want you to thrive and do well in that class so they try and stop you from getting distracted so you can focus, teachers really care about you!

You have the opportunity to make new friends and see your current friends on a regular basis. Whether you have classes with your friends or not you can still see them on that magical time called ‘lunch’, school allows you to communicate with not only your friends but a variety of people from different races, religious groups and backgrounds.

Providing A Better Future

Education is preventing poverty. 420 million people would be lifted out of poverty with a secondary education, this would reduce the number of poor worldwide by more than half. So by being in school you are making a better future for yourself.

For those who are wanna-be millionaires will be glad to know that one extra year of schooling increases an individual’s income by 10%. Of course there are individuals out there who become successful without any formal education but this is rare, usually the longer you stay in school the more qualifications you achieve and so therefore the better job you can acquire.

Last but not least you should love school because in this country education is free and mandatory, but in other less privilege places around the world education is hard to get and often very expensive, so don’t take school for granted as you are very lucky to be there!

Hopefully this will be the year you fall in love with school and on behalf of the Oystercatcher Newspaper I hope you have a fabulous academic year!
