An Egyptian women is being detained for 15 days to question her after she appeared in a BBC interview about the vanishing of her daughter in April 2017.
The mother has been arrested because officials have claimed that she was spreading false information about her daughters disappearance because on Monday, the woman’s daughter was broadcasted on an Egyptian talk show denying any accusations that she was being withheld or ill treated in any way.
However, despite the evidence of her daughter being safe, the mother still insists that her daughter is being tortured and is imprisoned.
Along with the women being arrested, Egypt’s State Information Service is pressing for an apology from the BBC in relation to the report being published last week about the mother claiming her daughter is being held captive. Egypt’s State Information Service also said that the report was an “absolute falsification and fabrication” (source BBC news). The BBC have put out a statement saying that it supports there reporting teams sincerity and they will scrutinise the accusation with Egyptian authorities in the next few days.
Following her daughters appearance on the talk show, on Tuesday the mother told a TV channel base in Turkey that her daughter had involuntarily claimed that she was safe and unharmed on the talk show. She told the TV channel, “I insist on what I said to the BBC ; this is the truth.” (source BBC news).
A day before the women’s arrest the Egyptian president, Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, announced that any discredit regarding the country’s security influences was considered “high treason”.
