Donald Trump commented, “it’s time to make our schools a much harder target for attackers, when we declare our schools to be a free gun zone it just puts our students in far more danger”. This means that Donald Trump is allowing certain teachers to take courses on gun management and protection in case of emergency. This will “apparently” protect school children from any future attacks throughout America. Donald Trump should be making efforts to combat gun violence, but is instead introducing more dangerous weapons in educational institutions. The current president of the United States seems to believe that the ability to make money is synonymous with the ability to run a country. It is evident from his lack of action against gun violence that this is simply not the case.
The stomach turning event that occured on 14/02/18, was the turning point of America’s gun law. On this day a 19 year old man brutally attacked a high school in Parkland, Florida with an AK-47 style rifle and killed seventeen people. The suspected man who committed the crime (Nikolas Cruz) legally purchased seven rifles in the past year with no background check and was not properly examined by any mental health workers. This reignites the debate on gun law and many protests are taking place to promote and encourage further background checks for purchasing guns. Donald Trump later discussed this topic and agreed with further background checks on gun purchasing but because of this law and how easy it is to purchase a gun, seventeen young students have been stripped of their life.
Gun law in America has left hundreds, maybe thousands of people dead every year in accidents such as accidental suicide or non-proper training to handle a gun. This is the argument by many American citizens to abandon the rights to own a gun. As a society that claim to hold strength, it leaves its people with lots of individuality to protect themselves. Many people such as Sam Harris, an American author who doesn’t agree with a world without guns and later explains why, “A world without guns is one in which the most aggressive men can do more or less anything they want. It is a world in which a man with a knife can rape and murder a woman in the presence of a dozen witnesses, and none will find the courage to intervene.” This is why people like Nikolas Cruz are able to commit these crimes and kill all these people and their government will only threaten him with the death penalty or life imprisonment and attempt to fix their mistakes.
