Bullying is, unfortunately, one of the many problems affecting children and teenagers in today’s society. Anti-bullying week, beginning Monday the 13th of November, aims to raise awareness on the topic.
There are many reasons why people may be bullied, such as:
- The type of clothes they wear
- Their interests (books, movies etc)
- Their hairstyle
- Their gender
- The way the person being bullied reacts to the teasing aimed at them
However, there are also many reasons why people bully :
- Trouble at home
- Insecurity
- They might have been bullied before and felt that they shouldn’t be the only ones to feel like that
- To show off to their peers
- Peer pressure
Despite having listed many reasons why people bully, I think that there is no justifiable reason to make anyone else feel like they are unwanted or unneeded.
Bullying doesn’t only cause insecurity, it can lead to self-doubt, depression, anxiety, isolation and in extreme cases, is enough to push people toward considering suicide.
If anyone is being bullied then they need to speak up and get help. It won’t make you weak or a coward, it will make you strong.
If you know anyone that is being bullied and know they are not doing anything about it then don’t just stand back and watch, tell someone!
Don’t let it get so bad that you have no one left, always tell someone – whether it’s a teacher, your friend, your parents, a sibling or a professional. Please just reach out.
