As you may know, over the few weeks, the region of Catalonia in Spain has made attempts to become an independent nation, but the Spanish government has shown their disapproval in a number of ways. In recent weeks, the SNP party have spoken out to the Spanish government, urging them to respect the Catalans’ wish to become independent.
Nicola Sturgeon spoke out saying:
“It is not for me to say whether Catalonia should be independent’.
The majority of the SNP party are pro-independence. A number of the inhabitants of Scotland are also for independence which was shown when 45% of voters voted to leave the UK in the 2014 Independence referendum. Therefore, many Scots sympathise with the Catalonians as they both share the same desire.
As a result, #ScotsforCatalonia is being spread across twitter, with many sharing pictures of Catalonian flags hanging from their windows, and of the marches being held across Scotland. The biggest of which happened in Edinburgh on the October 1st with 1,000 demonstrators in attendance, successfully withstanding heavy rain to support this worthy cause. In addition, the ‘Young Scots for Independence’ group organised a trip to Barcelona to aid their Catalonian allies.
It looks hopeful for Catalonia at this time, and real progress is being made. Perhaps they will at last achieve independence, leaving Scotland to claim that they aided in their efforts.
