As part of our Quick Interviews series, The Oystercatcher speaks to members of the school community. This week we speak to Mrs McQuiston of the Art department.
Why did you become a teacher?
To be able to be creative every day and inspire others to do the same.
What is your favourite part about teaching Art and Design?
I love seeing my pupils develop their skills and abilities to produce artwork they can be proud of!
What is your least favourite part about teaching Art and Design?
Administration.
When did you become a teacher?
Almost 10 years ago.
What is the hardest thing about being an Art and Design Teacher?
The diversity of the subject. In one class you can be teaching lighting design, jewellery and headwear designs then drawing, painting and sculpture in another class. Plus all the written work and research!
What is your day like being an Art and Design teacher?
Busy! Lots of preparation for all the needs of each class, 2D and 3D work.
If you could have any other job, other than teaching, what would it be?
I would love to have been a special effects artist making creatures for the film industry.
What made you interested in Art and Design?
My mother was a great influence. Very talented and artistic.
Who is your favourite artist?
I love so many different artists – Kevin Francis Gray, Salvador Dali, Samantha French, Ron Mueck, Kate MacDowell. I find new artists every day whom I admire.
