Jarlshof

On Friday after we had been to Dunrossness we drove down to a archeology site called Jarlshof. It is the ruins of bronzage, ironage, viking and medieval houses. We got there and the weather was poor so we got to eat in the museum. We got outside and we went to early round houses, most of them were gone but you could see the remains. They consisted of a round building made of stone. We went  to more recent round houses and there was a lot of rooms in them. They were still round but bigger with rooms in them. We each chose a room and pretended it was our own. We progressed to the viking setelment and most of that had gone to. They were rectangular this time and still made of stone. We went into a lairds house. It was a much bigger and well made. We got to climb some stairs and have an ariel veiw. We left Jarlshof and went to the Crofthouse Museum. It was just like how it would have been in the past. There was a peat fire aswell. It had box beds and spinning wheels.

Tigers and International Education

On Friday 4th of May we had a school trip to the Dunrossness Primary School to learn about sustainable development education (S.D.E).  We each had our own events that we were going too. Me and Brydon were going to the same things which were International Education and Learning about Tigers. When we first got to Dunrossness all the schools went into the school hall and the Dunrossness bairns talked about what the display boards were about. There display boards were very bright and colourful with pictures! We all got to look around and learn what the Dunrossness ones had been doing. The other schools that were there were Bressay, Sandwick and Tingwall.

At 10:15 we went to our first event which was an International Education workshop with Davy Cummings. We had to split up into groups and I was with some Tingwall bairns. First of all we had to imagine the earth as if there were only 100 people. We had to think of the amount of people there would be from each continent, would have a computer or a TV, would be Christian, would have clean water, have a house, have a family, would be white or black, how many would have beds and how many would have food. Davy Cummings showed us a video to see if we were right about are predictions. I don’t think anyone was completely right but some of the answers were quite shocking.

We also had to watch a video about Bad things that happened in the earth including Terrorism, Pollution, War, Global Warming and Famine and  Rainforest Cutting down.  In our groups we wrote down about how we could maybe change 2 of the Bad things. Our group chose Terrorism and Global Warming. We had some ideas but they maybe wouldn’t be that big that it could stop the Terrorism and Global Warming.

After that we walked back into the Hall and went and got piece from the Fairtrade Tuck Shop stand. All the Chocolate Chip cookies were gone so I had a Caramel Bar.

Brydon and I had to ask a Dunrossness bairn where the P7 room was because that’s where our next event was. It was down a couple of corridors and we would never of had make it if we hadn’t of asked anyone! She showed us where it was and we said thank you. Brydon and I were kind of late because we were the last of our group that turned up! Our next group was Learning about Tigers! Mrs Blackadder who was teaching us told us her name and told us we had to dress up as Tigers to have the full understanding of how they felt! I put on tiger breeks, Tiger top and a tiger hat! We all looked at scrapbooks that the lady had made and had to imagine what the rainforest would look like. She told us about how she knew a man who had lost 3 fingers after being attacked by a tiger. The man who took the picture was so scared he fell of the elephant that he was on taking pictures! Then another man had taken a picture of the man falling of the elephant! Afterwards she told us a story about Tiger cubs whose mum got shot. We all had to lie on the floor with our eyes closed and think about the story in our head.  She finished the story and we had 10 minutes left so we had to act out the story. I was the tiger mum who got shot! Mrs Blackadder thought we did a good job! The bell rang and we helped Mrs Blackaddder take her tiger toys and costumes back out to her car.

Me and Brydon went back to the hall and met up with the rest of the Burravoe bairns and we all went out to get our pictures taken in front of the Dunrossness Schools rainforest that they had made! The bus was waiting outside for us so we went on the bus.

Dunrossness-Tiger workshop

On Friday we had to wake up early so that we could get the bus to Dunrossness to go to a Sustainable Development Education (SDE) Day. We hopped on the bus and went to the ferry. When we were across we drove all the way to the south main land.

We jamp of the bus and went into Dunrossness school. When we got in we dumped our items in Mrs Simpson’s room and walked to the hall. A few people welcomed us and told us about the day. There were stalls with things that the schools have done and taken to Dunrossness for people to see.

We devied in pairs to some workshops. My first one was international education with Davie Cummings.

We had to think about if the world was a village of 100 people how many would be from each continent and how many people would be rich and poor, how many would have electricity and running water etc. We had to think of problems like war and forest fires and how we could do something to help. I had war, logging and global warming.

We went to an organic tuck shop and I had a caramel bar.

My next workshop was tigers. We walked in and we had to dress up as a tiger. Then we heard a story about tigers, once we had heard it we acted out the story. I was the daddy tiger! We were doing that then we ran out of time. We put the costumes away then we waited for the bus. We took the bus to Jarlshof.

Making Pots at Dunrossness

On Friday the 4th of May we went on a trip to Dunrossness School. We all met in the hall and were told a bit about the day; we got a few minutes to look at all of the interesting display boards. Then we had to get into our groups for our workshops, once we had been sorted into our groups then we set off to where ever our first workshop was taking place. Me and Charlotte had to go across the road and into a little building with “Out of school club rocks” written in the windows and this was where we were going.

We all walked into the room on our left after coming through the main door and started the workshop. First Mrs Hay showed us how to make the pots, there were special wooden things that looked like stamps which we had to use to finish off the pots. Once we had finished making three pots then we had to fill them with dry soil and plant the plant or seed, since the soil was dry we put a drop of water in the pot to moisten it. We couldn’t put too much water in because the pot might start to get a bit soggy. Once we had finished that then we got to do a word search or a sheet where you had to see how many words you could make out of the word “Sunflowers.”

There were people that came into the room to take some pictures so I got to plant another flower. My flowers were 2 Livingston daisies, 1 Sunflower and 1 Nasturtium. Then it was time to go to the next workshop so we all collected our plants and went to the next work shop.

Once we got back to the school then we headed off to our next work shop Me and Charlotte had to go through quite a lot of corridors our next work shop was with Davie Comings, first Davie asked us to get into groups and he gave us a piece of scrap paper to write our answers on. Next we were asked if the world was a village of 100 people how many would be from Asia ECT. Next he showed us a video all about that so we could see what the actual answers were. We were shown another video about the problems that the earth comes across some of the problems were pollution, terrorism, war, global warming, famine and cutting down trees. We had to pick 2 problems from that video and we had to come up with solutions for the problems. The problems that my group chose were pollution and terrorism our solutions were electric cars and divided land.

We thought that the electric cars would stop the pollution and divided land would stop people from fighting. After we had done that then it was time to go so me and Charlotte headed back to the hall (which was VERY hard!) but once we’d found our way then we met up in the hall again and once we were all there then we signed out of the school and then went to the bus.

Dunrossness School-Art Workshops

On the 4th of May 2012 we went to Dunrossness School on a school Trip. We got two of the workshops we wanted to do. My Fist was Bird Collage we did a robin. They where 8 people in the group. The teacher was called Mrs. Burr she told us that they where 200 robins at Sumburgh head hiding in the bushes. I learned a new technique for getting the fabric the right size you get the fabric that you are using stick it on and turn it over and cut the fabric. For my snack I had a tropical fruit juice from the tuck shop. After that I walked to kite making with Mrs. Moar fist we had to get cellophane cut in a diamond shape and then you have to find two pieces of garden cane stick them together with coloured tape into a cross shape and then tape it to the cellophane with pieces  of strong coloured tape put pieces on the ends and two bits in the middle that are shaped like and x and  then get three  or less bits down the middle and then you have to get five pieces of cut up carrier bag the same color and tape it together with sellotape and  then put to holes in the x and tie string to it and get a piece of cardboard and rap the string around it take as much string as you want depending on how high you want it to fly in the sky.

Dunrossness

Dunrossness

On 4/05/ 12 all of us went to Dunrossness Primary School. We had to travel on the bus on a ferry to get there.

First four of the children from Dunrossness welcomed us and told us about what will happen through the morning.

Ms Breyley explained to us on the ferry what groups we were in, and I was in both of them with Honor. The first workshop me and Honor went to was Pond Dipping. It was with Mr Rose. It was awesome because we found loads of cool things like tadpoles, swimming beetles and pond snails. One of the people found two male stickle backs. I learned how to tell if stickle backs are male or female because males have red bellies.

After that workshop all of us met up in the hall and went to get a snack at the Fair Trade tuck shop. I had a Geo Bar, it had honey in it and it tasted quit nice.  Loads of other people were there.

Then the last workshop was the pompom puffins. We had to find our way to that workshop when we found it we sat down and watched a slideshow about birds, it was the day when the puffins were in the nest on puffin cam. Then we started to make the baby puffins. You need wool, card, a pen, scissors and the lady that was there to help us called Helen, she was part of RSPB. When you were done you could put a puffin costume on if you wanted but all the girls weren’t ready in time so all the boys wanted to so they all did.

I enjoyed it all because it was really fun and I think everyone enjoyed it too. Before we left we got our picture taken  behind the Dunrossness schools jungle they have near the front door.
