Golf

In May 2012 a lady called Linda came to our school on Tuesdays to do golf with P4 and up. Sometimes we did it outside when to was ok weather but we only went outside twice. I learned a lot about  golf. I learned how to hold the club, what one you use for putting and that one to use if you want to hit the ball far and high. We used the Driver and the Putter. There is left hand Drivers and right hand ones. I used a right handed one because I am right  handed.

Dunrossness School, Jarlshof and Shetland Croft House Museum

On the 4th of May Burravoe School went to Dunrossness School, Jarlshof and The Shetland Croft House Museum. First We went to Dunrossness Primary School for Sustainable Development Education Day we got to Dunrossness School we parked up the bus and got out of the bus, and went inside and met Ms Simpson who took us to her room and let us put are jackets in there. Next we went in to the hall. Where lots of people ready for a big announcement. We sat down too and watched 3 children explaining about why we had came to Dunrossness. Once they had finished Ms Simpson told the audience who is here and that she thought that our school wouldn’t be able to come because of the snow but we surprised her by being able to come. Next we were allowed to move are and look at the displays one of the displays was ours. After we had a look around we had to go in groups for workshops. When we were on the ferry to Toft we were told what groups we were we in. I was with Lucy in my group, First Lucy and I had to wait until a Lady called Mrs Hay had rounded up 6 other children. So we had to wait for about 2 minutes. After we saw Mrs Hay with 6 other children we went to our workshop. We made pots out of news paper, It was fun and easy! We got to chose what plants we wanted in our pots. After we had finished our workshop we went in to the hall to get something to drink from the tuck shop, I got a carton of juice. Next we had to go to our next workshop which was where we had to work in groups and work out questions.  It made us think as some of the questions where quite hard. We finished that after 12:00. Lucy and I rushed off to the hall to meet the others. Then we had to grab our coats and go to the bus.

Jarlshof

When we got to Jarlshof it was snowing so we had to wrap up warm. We went into the little shop/museum ,where the man let us eat our packed lunch that our cook Elsie had  made for us. I had a tuna sandwich.  We had to chose from cheese, ham, jam or tuna. Which sandwich would you like? After we finished our sandwiches we got to look around the museum. While the others were eating we had a go at grinding wheat to make flour. Next we went outside and explored the houses that the Vikings lived in.

Shetland Croft House Museum

We went there to also learn about crofters and what their houses used to look like.  Some of us had been there before like me. We saw a peat fire which had peat in it, we saw beds with wooden doors covering them. They also had 2 barns where they kept the animals like horses and pigs. Outside they had a boat shed where they would have kept things.

Jarlshof & Crofthouse Museum

Jarlshof

On the 4th of May 2012 we went to Jarlshof on a school trip. We had our packed lunch there in the exhibition room inside, the man in the gift shop said we could eat inside because it was wet outside and cold and our sandwiches would get wet and taste horrible . Once we finished then we went outside first we went to the wheel houses then we went to the Viking houses and then the Lairds house and I climbed the stairs to the top it was windy up there and it was very high up. My favourite place was the wheelhouses because it was sheltered in there.

We went to the gift shop at the end and I bought a little lamb.

Crofthouse Museum

After Jarlshof we went to the Crofthouse Museum. The Crofthouse Museum had a tiny door I didn’t need to duck at all to get in the door. It had box beds   I sat next to the fire in a big chair it was big to me. Then we went in to the bedroom I lied on one of the beds it was comfy it wasn’t a box bed. Then we went outside and looked at the big stack of peats it was big then we went back and looked at the barn it was very dark inside. It was very fun but it was dark. We looked in the garden and then we went back to the bus and took of our boots.

The snowy, rainy and windy Trip to Jarlshof

On Friday after going to Dunrossness we went to Jarlshof in the bus. Jarlshof is a historical site; there are houses there which belonged to Vikings and old Shetlanders. There are round houses and rectangular houses and there are even wheelhouses but it was absolutely pouring with snow and rain.

We got to go and explore all of the old houses and go through the tiny doorways. We all went through a tiny door way which was about 60cm high and made of stone (everything was made of stone) anyway once we were all through the door then we all ended up in a big round wheel house with different rooms in it. We all really liked the wheelhouse because it was so big and sheltered.

Then we went on to the Viking houses, the Viking houses were rectangular and quite big there wasn’t very much on the Viking houses left so we went to the lairds house. It was very windy, snowy and rainy so most of us stood behind a big wall to shelter but some people climbed up modern metal stairs to have a look at the whole of Jarlshof.

Nothing Changes When it Snows!

After we were at Dunrossness we took a bus trip just down the road to Jarlshof. In the bus it was hailing really hard! We waited in the bus for a minute when we got to Jarlshof but the weather didn’t stop. So Brydon and I got the Lunch boxes out of the boot and walky ran with our hoods up till we came to the Jarlshof centre! In the Jarlshof centre there is a gift shop, pictures of what it use to look like, games that have been found, a diagram of Jarlshof and much more! We were all wet by just walking down that little path! The man was very nice and said we could eat our packed lunch inside! We would have all screamed “YAY!” With delight but we were all being sensibible! We all sat on the floor and ate our sandwiches. I had a Ham sandwich and it was YUMMY! The other choices in our packed lunch was Pizza, More sandwiches, Fruit and Biscuits! After we finished our packed lunch we had a look around at the actual museum part. Lucy and I played a Tafl (an old Viking game) we got confused but we got the hand of it! We looked at the Birds eye view map of Jarlshof and you could see all the Viking houses and wheel houses from above! We all got our Gloves, Hats and Scarves on again to go outside and brave the weather to look at the oldest settlements structures.  We went outside and headed and looked at everything but it was so cold! The hail blew in our faces but we went inside to the gift shop! I got a puffin egg cup and a Celtic bracelet. We ran back to the bus with the boxes and got sat back in our seats and headed to the croft house museum.

At the croft house museum all the tall people had to duck through the doors because they were very tiny! Some of us forgot and hit our heads… OUCH! The croft house museum has been kept like it was back in the old days. There were carders that we each had a shot at! The beds were like wooden boxes that maybe there would be two people that slept in them! The weather was still bad when we got back in the box but it brightened up a bit coming home then turned bad again!
