Zu3D

At our school we have been using  an app for the iPad called Zu3D it is animation software that is easy for children to use.  You can import sounds or record your own. It is quite easy to use because instead of words on the panels like cut and sounds it has icons which are better if some people can’t read longer words like record etc. Some of us had to learn how to cut the sound that we recorded or make our sound longer. It also has onion skinning so its easy to see if you have moved your character to much or to little as there is like a ghost version of your character you are using . Our next challenge was to put in the title and the credits  then we had to import it to our photos then we showed it to the P1 and P2s. My groups animation was called The Dinosaurs and it was about dinosaurs obviously. We only used 15 frames to make our short animation.

Pupil Meeting

On Thursday the 9th of January we had a Pupil Meeting. Pupil Meeting is when all of the pupils come together and sit in a circle and discuss what’s going on in school.  I chaired the meeting but we swap who chairs it every time. We make decisions on things that happen in the school. We have it once at the beginning of every term. We usually decide what we want to learn and what topics we will do. We decided that when we won the carnival money, we had £100 and we would give it to four different charities. The charities we are giving to this year is CLAN Haven, Guide dogs for the Blind, SSPCA and British Heart Foundation. We run it ourselves and the teachers go out of the room then we give them feedback.

Our Reduce, Reuse and Re-cycle Trip

On Tuesday 10th December Burravoe School went to Lerwick on a school trip. Most of us met up at school and caught the bus from there the rest of the Burravoe school met the bus at Ulsta then after a couple of minutes of waiting in the queue, we drove on to the ferry then we all went up stairs.  Some of us played in the play room other sat in the seats provided on the ferry. Then we went  back on the bus and we drove and drove and drove until we got to Lerwick then we headed to Toll clock for a toilet stop after we had all been to the toilet we went back on the bus.

Then we drove to the Energy Recovery Plant when we got there we sat in the meeting room  while Brydon and Libby (who work there) told us about what they do. Then we  got a hard hat each and a pair of  protective glasses to protect our eyes if there were any bright lights that could either badly damage our eyes or blind us. Then we watched a power point that gave us a bit of information before we started the tour of the building. We went into a room and we saw through some thick glass the claw which was picking up rubbish out of a big pit  then an essikert ( rubbish truck) empted rubbish into the pit. We then went down stairs. When we got to  the furnace room we saw the furnace through VERY VERY thick glass because if it was thin they wouldn’t have let us see it because the furnace would melt the glass. I learned that the furnace gets up to 1,200 °C at the highest temperature and the lowest temperature was 1,000°C which is the heat of a volcano.  I could feel the heat on my face. Then we went on the bus and put on our high visibility vests so we could be seen while walking around in the landfill site because of lorries and other vehicles. It was very smelly and it attracted birds.  I learned that the old landfill site is where the running track at clickimin leisure centre is now. Then we went to the District Heating Boiler Station. We met Mr Martain or Nevel whatever you want to call him then we went  into the meeting room he told us about the district heatinge  schee and where it goes like Gilbert Bain hospital, Toll clock shopping center, Lerwick hotel, Anderson high school etc. Then we got torches and then we went home and got the 3.00 ferry home.

Our Busy Day

On Tuesday 10th December the whole school went to the Energy Recovery Plant and then the landfill site and then we all had our lunch and after that we went to the district heating scheme. When we were in the Energy Recovery Plant we met 2 people called Libby and Brydon, they showed us a map of where the heat goes.  First it goes from the Energy Recovery Plant to SBS then it goes onto the Shetland Catch, District Heating Boiler Station, the Power Station, Shetland Farm Dairies, the Ferry Terminal, the Toll Clock Centre, the New Museum, North Ness Business Park , Charlotte House and then finally it goes to many more working places in Lerwick. After they showed us the map they showed us a pipe and I learned that it only dropped 1°C because it had this foam thing that you wrap around the pipe and it looked like they put duck tape around the foam and that foam keeps the pipe hot which keeps the heating hot.

I learned that the furnace is the heat of a volcano and that they burn the rubbish.

I learned that the claw is controlled by a chair with buttons and the yellow and orange bags are from the hospitals and the care homes and that was our busy day.

Our School Trip

On Tuesday 10th December we went to the Energy Recovery Plant, District Heatining Scheme and the landfill site.

First we went to the Energy Recovery Plant. We met two people called Brydon and Libby. They showed us a power point about what sort of things they did there and they showed us a claw. Then they gave us hardhats and safety glasses and we went down stairs. We stood in a line and when it was our turn they showed us the furnace (we needed our safety glasses at that point). They showed us a blue tank which contained boiling water.

Then we went to the landfill site. At the landfill site there was a lot of seagulls that were attracted by the food containers and the smell. Brydon showed us around.

Next we went to the Shetland museum to have our sandwiches and a couple of other things.

Last we saw the District Heating Scheme. The man gave us mini torches. He showed us an energy pipe.

Then it was time to go home.

I learned that they never run out of rubbish at the Energy Recovery plant and that the furnace is as hot as lava.

Trip To Energy Recovery Plant 2013

On Tuesday the 10th December, We had to get to school before 8.45 because we were going on a school trip to three different places.

Morning

Our bus picked us up at school, we all rushed on the bus and sat down as fast as we could me and Mia sat in the second to back seats next to Bradley. When we arrived in Ulsta we picked up Abby, Melissa, Neil and Leah. On the ferry we went upstairs and sat down on the comfy red chairs, we sat there for 20 minutes telling jokes. Then finally we arrived in Toft.

When we got off the ferry, it seemed to take forever to Lerwick!

We arrived in Lerwick, and went to our first stop which was The Energy Recovery Plant, we met our tour guides called Brydon and Libby, who took us into a room that was like a meeting room and gave a small presentation which was about what they do.

We got hard hats and glasses to wear because we were going to go into potentially dangerous rooms.

First we had to clamber down a lot of stairs; we walked into the control room which was full of windows. We saw a massive claw thing that was hung from the room. There was a man who sat in a large comfy chair and controlled the claw. He moved the claw down to pick up the rubbish, and moved the claw towards the triple glazed glass and showed us how it could drop things.

We saw a lot of rubbish, an Essikert was reversing and then emptying it’s load. When the Essikert was tipping we thought it was going to fall into the dump.  The man (who was controlling the claw) pointed out that the orange bags where from the hospitals.

Next we walked down another lot of stairs and walked into a room which was a bit smelly, and saw tall walls that where protecting the furnace from going out. Apparently it is usually hot and stuffy in there but (the day we were there) it was cooler. Libby took us one at a time into a small little corridor, which had tall walls. Libby pulled a small leaver which showed us how what the furnace looked like. It was kept at 1,200°C, it can get hotter but that’s not a good thing.  I learned that people have to clean out the furnace 3 times every year!

Next we got back into the bus and drove up the road a bit, we had to put on our hi-vest jackets on (mine was orange). We met Brydon (one of our tour guides!) next to the recycling box’s. We went up the Landfill site where we saw tons and tons of sea gulls (It would be a bird watchers dream come true!) It was quite smelly and you could see a lot of bird poop on the path (that we just walked on) We went into this place with loads and loads of skips, I learned that people could come and dump their rubbish if they have missed the essikert.

The skips were labelled but Brydon thinks that nobody pays attention to the signs because there is rubbish that shouldn’t be in a couple of skips. I found out that the only place you can recycle plasterboards is in Lerwick.

Lunch Time

We went to the Shetland Museum. As soon as we got through the revolving doors, we started skipwalk (which is a word that means skipping at the pace of walking) into the Learning Room. We had our pack lunches (that Elsie our cook made!) we had sandwiches, sausage rolls, fruit and flapjacks. Mrs Breyley said we could explore as long as we looked after the younger ones and make sure no one gets lost.

Afternoon:

In the afternoon, we went to the Shetland Heat Energy and Power Limited.  It was a curvy archway building. It was a building that stood out from the rest of the buildings.

Inside the building we met the manager called Neville Martin. We sat in the managers room, and listened to his presentation he got a laser and pointed at the map that was behind me. He said there wasn’t much to see but he would try and show us everything that was in the building! We saw a white box that heats up the water, Neville told us that he works closely with The Energy Recovery Plant, apparently there was a power cut at 4.00am in the morning, because it was 4 am in the morning it didn’t affect the whole of Lerwick, (because The Energy Recovery Plant was heating water and power for the whole of Lerwick.)

Neville gave us torches and leaflets.

I learned that The Energy Recovery Plant and Shetland Heat Energy and Power Limited worked together to make heat for people in Lerwick.

Trip out in Lerwick

On Tuesday we went on a school trip to the Energy Recovery Plant. We went in to see the claw. We saw rubbish that people throw away. There was a lot of stuff. There were two people guiding us around. They were called Libby and Brydon. We went outside to see the land fill. I learned that they burn the rubbish to make heat. It goes around Lerwick. We also saw the essikert dump all the rubbish. I learned that the furnace is really hot like a volcano. We wore a hard helmet and safety glasses.

We went to the land fill. It had lots of TV’s. It had lots of seagulls on the  land fill. The land fill was smelly and we saw skips so if people miss the Essikert they can come and put their

Rubbish in the skips. You can put things in the skip. They were metal. Brydon showed us one of the pipes that goes around Lerwick, one of the places is the Toll clock shopping centre. And on the pipes is foam around and duck tape to keep warm when the water is going around.  I also learned that it loses 10 times it’s warmth when it goes around Lerwick. I learned that if you turn on a warm tap it heats up quickly.

On Tuesday the 10th of December we had a school trip. We went to three places the first one was the Energy Recovery Plant and second one was landfill site and the last one was Shetland Heat Energy and Power Limited. We went to the meeting room at the Energy Recovery Plant. The furnace burns the rubbish to make hot water then it goes to the pipes then it goes to people’s houses for heating. We went to the control room we looked at the claw. The claw picks up the rubbish and takes it to the furnace. The furnace temperate was 1,200°C . We got a hardhat and safety glasses. I learned that the furnace was very hot on your face.  My favourite bits were the claw and the furnace.  We got our hi-vest jacket to go to the landfill site. We saw seagulls and I saw old TVs. I saw a machine and I saw the rubbish was crushed. Then we went to the Energy and Power Limited. We got torches and a leaflet. Neville turned the tap and Mia tested the water and I saw the steam come up.

School Trip

Energy Recovery Plant

When the school went to the Energy Recovery Plant they had to wear hard helmets and special glasses they were wearing them because they had to be safe. They went to see a big claw that picked up all the rubbish I learned that they take the rubbish to the furnace. A man was controlling the claw and the man took it right up to the window so that they could all see what was in the rubbish. In the rubbish they saw a big pillow. Then they all went to a place where they saw the furnace behind some doors, the furnace was very hot.

After they went to the Energy Recovery Plant they went to the land fill it was very smelly.  There were a lot of seagulls at the land fill I learned the seagulls were looking for food.

Energy recovery plant

On Tuesday we went on a school trip to the Energy Recovery Plant. First we went in the meeting room where we saw a power point about how the plant works. Wee Burnie, a character in the power point, helped us understand what happens in the Energy Recovery Plant. Then all of the school put on hard helmets and glasses, then they went up to the control room and saw the claw they thought it was fun looking in the pit at pillows and Oreo packets that people thrown away. Then we went down stairs and saw an enormous blue tank, we all lined up to see the furnace. When you duck down you can really see the colours in the fire. We all went back on the bus up a hill and we all saw the land fill it was full of rubbish. Then we went down a bit, to the recycling centre, one of the children put a bag in the clothes place and a man helped. Then all of the school went to the District Heating Station we all got torches.

I learned that pipes go around Lerwick and heat up buildings.

I learned that the Plant has a bratz clock.
