Scotland’s curriculum – Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) – helps our children and young people gain the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for life in the 21st century.
Curriculum for Excellence places learners at the heart of education. At its centre are four fundamental capacities that reflect and recognise the lifelong nature of education and learning. The four capacities are aimed at helping children and young people to become:
- Successful learners
- Confident individuals
- Responsible citizens
- Effective contributors
The curriculum in Troon works to ensure:
- Challenge and Enjoyment
- Breadth
- Progression
- Depth
- Personalisation of Choice
- Coherence
- Relevance
Curriculum areas
There are eight curriculum areas:
- Expressive arts
- Health and wellbeing
- Languages (including English, Gàidhlig, Gaelic learners, modern languages and classical languages)
- Mathematics
- Religious and moral education (including Religious and moral education and Religious education in Roman Catholic schools)
- Sciences
- Social studies
- Technologies.
Literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing are recognised as being particularly important – these areas are seen as being the ‘responsibility of all’ staff.
Within Curriculum for Excellence, learning is arranged in levels as follows:
Early Level Nursery and Primary 1, or later for some.
First Level Primary 2 – Primary 4, but earlier or later for some.
Second Level Primary 5 – Primary 7, but earlier or later for some.
Across all stages of the school, children are given opportunities to interact and learn from each other.
